The last image on most of my slide decks since 2005, applicable to so many things. Artist unknown (pre-AI obv).
🧵 125/x The Long Roundabout (October 2021 - ?) Winding up a 10-week stay in Santa Fe NM. May-July 2026. Approaching the end of year 5, pace of travel slowed for a while, will pick up in September. Back to Denver now for 7 weeks. Scenes from daily neighborhood walks...could get used to it.
Maybe *steps* towards abolishing, but not *all* the steps? C'mon.
I fully trust this guy to hold his own in a room full of Russian spooks.
Before Croatia entered the Schengen regime it was my goto for staying in Europe without spending my Schengen budget. Several long stays - Zagreb mostly, but the coastal cities too. Very fond of the place, people, and especially its "naive" art tradition. Portugal's okay too 🙃
Drove up from Santa Fe last night looking for Moonrise, Hernandez, New Mexico. It was a beautiful moon but you could never tell it from my cell phone shots. With apologies to Ansel Adams…
Just pushed a v0.3 of Environmental Dimensions of Place Service (EDOPS) edops.computingplace.org, delivering env signatures for places. There's a sandbox, API, repo with lots of docs (github.com/kgeographer/...), and an arm-wavy blog post (kgeographer.org/category/res...). Early stages, progressing.
First day trip on this 2 month Santa Fe stay: Rio Grande near Pilar and Taos Pueblo. A day off from #EDOPS environmental sig work, fieldwork you might say. Three hours later the skies exploded in massive thunder/hail storm. For an hour.
Returned to Santa Fe, settling in for 10 weeks to work on my Environmental Dimensions of Place service (#EDOPS) and do some wandering in clear light.
🧵 The Long Roundabout (October 2021 - ?) Pause to map: 179 stays over 4 1/2 years, in 121 places in 23 countries on this digital nomad journey so far. Might be winding down, time will tell.
🧵 123, 124/x The Long Roundabout (October 2021 - ?) Road trip in the Misiones Province, Argentina with stays in San Ignacio and Puerto Rico. Rio Paraná, Posadas and Nuestra Señora de Loreto Mision along the way. April 2026.
🧵 122/x The Long Roundabout (October 2021 - ?) Puerto Iguazú, Argentina y sus cataratas. Lucky to have a sunny day. April, 2026.
Hey Claude, define “imperious” but in a picture, not words. Claude:
🧵 121/x The Long Roundabout (October 2021 - ??) Colonia del Sacramento, Uruguay. April, 2026 A ferry ride across the broad Rio de la Plata estuary from Buenos Aires.
Development of the EDOPS environmental signature is focused mostly on detailed hydro and climate variables, but #ecoregions will be linked also. A *very* preliminary interface for viewing them w/wiki text is in place. cedop.kgeographer.org/edop Also, ishi.pitt.edu is now a project partner! #wiring
Heading to Colonia del Sacramento, Uruguay by ferry from Buenos Aires tomorrow. Just an overnight stay, but NOT due to some manic need to add to country and World Heritage List totals. The weather will be nice and this is #GeographyResearch. It'll be 53 and 161.
My first presentation on Computing Place and its Environmental Dimensions of Place signature service (EDOPS) is to the @pelagios.bsky.social Place Working Group meeting, 6 April, 14:00 UTC. Easy signup to attend: pitt.zoom.us/meeting/regi...
Made a good start on Computing Place, my capstone project looking into culture <> environment relations globally. First step: Environmental Dimensions of Place (EDOP) signatures for any given location. Tools linking them to cultural data will follow. Explainer: kgeographer.org/computing-pl... 1/x
