Happy solstice Hookland! Here are some flowers in honor of the day

3 blooms from my neighbor’s rose bush — or maybe it’s 4 if you count the one that’s squished sideways. These weren’t very scented, but the color is this wonderful rich pink-orange-red shade that manages to be deep hued but still muted and not shouty.

A bunch of balloon-flowers. I don’t remember the Latin name. These are at peak blossom opening. With a medium shade of purple to the petals (maybe lilac purple?) with white pistils in the center.

Behold! A dodo 🦤
No seriously though, this image shows a large sculpture of a dodo bird, by prop maker Hilary Scott. Sculpture is about 2 -1/2 feet tall? And is sitting in a house chair (in his house, which is open for Open Studios weekend). His tail plumage is kinda fluffy perky? And he looks dark and scaley, similar in a way to if you made one of the Edward Gorey cartoons of strange scaled beasts into a 3 dimensional sculpture. On his face, However, he’s wearing sort of an armored mask thing? Kinda steampunk looking. It covers his face and beak, but his eyes show — not covered. Then, he’s wearing a black hat, I forget the name of the style, but if you picture the kind of hat you see a stereotypical British business man from the 1940s wearing, with a short, curled up brim, and a round crown? Or like the hats worn by Laurel & Hardy? That’s his hat. Looks dapper on him.

Hey @bruceshark.bsky.social ! I got to visit one of your distant cousins today at the home of an artist participating in Somerville Open Studios — among his talents are prop making. I am rather fond of his creatures, including your cousin, the quilted hammerhead!

This is a sculpture in the shape of a small hammerhead shark. He’s made with lovely swatches of brightly colored (think batik-like patterns) red and blue quilting cotton, very handsome. He’s posed in Andi’s the length of an old fashioned tub, with a shower curtain around him that shows blue bubbles, so very aquatic friendly environment. This is one of the works of prop maker Hilary Scott, and if memory serves his website is his name, HilaryScott.com he and his lovely family participate in Somerville Open Studios each year and not only open their home to visitors but also have a running batch of chocolate chip cookies seemingly endlessly coming out of the oven. Everyone loves these people.

I haven’t got any info on where to file complaints, HOWEVER, there are in fact cup holders that would fit a walker. They’re made for bikes. Kikkerland is the brand I have for my bike.

I’m on a tear to use entrelac projects to use certain skeins of random yarn. So I have one “get back into the technique” test scarf, and am working on a milk-cotton wider piece that is as yet indeterminate (might make it long then steek it into a FrankenCardigan?)

Knitting project 1: entrelac technique - which is where you make alternating triangles and rectangles going in different directional slants, so that the piece ends up looking like woven strips of knitted fabric. This piece is made with skeins of Noro yarn, which is a variegated yarn and this piece itself runs slowly and graduatelly from purple through green and teal turquoise and eventually to a dark wine color.

Entrelac knitting project 2: This is a closeup of the second entrelac project — it’s made from a cotton yarn, and not variegated or gradual transitioning colors. Instead I used individual color yarns, and chose when to switch colors. So the bottom rows of blocks are light blue, then a row of pale lavender, then A green color.

Hey, @bruceshark.bsky.social ! I bumped into a feisty young cousin of yours today at a Persian market! He was guarding the front register with some of his friends!

This is a closeup of one of a whole display of, well, I’m pretty sure they’re not just kids toys but also involve some kind of candy surprise inside the handle? This particular one is a shark, with a wily grin on his face, and he’s medium blue and he’s not quite winking — but he definitely looks like he’s up to no good. There’s some sort of trigger mechanism on the handle so he might have a bitey-jaw kind of thing going on too. For reasons that are not clear, the handle that he is emerging from looks like a melted candle, all wax dripping looking? But here’s the confusing part: it’s bright red— I’m not sure Sid they mean to make him emerge from waves and then just make a bad color choice? Or is he actually emerging from a big melt candle? I have no answers.

This is another closeup from that display of kids toys near the register — this one is a small hand-sized fishing rod and reel, looks like the reel turns with a crank?

I would hope so if I were a kid.

Update: we have spent the day carefully slicing kozo paper into 2mm strips. Spinning begins tomorrow using a ‘book charkha’ ! Excite! Also exhausted, much pez-head yawns. Also the textiles studio has a fabulous collection of books.

Hey @bruceshark.bsky.social — was at a Buc-ees today (in and of itself a strange and overwhelming experience) and found one of those penny stamp roller souvenir machines, so I got one and then… discovered this. I know copper is a soft metal, but take care of your teeth okay?

So this is a little rubber or silicone thing on a keychain that is designed to hold one of those pennies that you’ve put through one of those mechanical machines that rolls and stamps the penny into a design that makes it a souvenir of some destination. A national park, a museum, a famous place, or in this case, so help me, a Buc-ees store. This thing is called a “pennypalz” and the one in the pic is shaped like a shark whose jaws are wide open and you’re meant to put that souvenir penny into its mouth. Like a frame made of teeth. Delightfully ridiculous.

I’m chuffed to have been accepted into a couple juried shows recently. If you are in the vicinity of upstate NY / the Adirondacks, (insta handle) @viewartscenter is having an opening soon, and this is the flyer. I think their website has more details as well. viewarts.org ? 🎉 🎉 🎉

Flyer for an art show, showing partial views of 3 of the accepted works. One is a book with stems growing out from it, the center one is a book shaped like a heart with small reminders signs in it like “I can’t save the world and I don’t want to”, and the third is a pamphlet style folded parchment book with abstract designs in it.

The show is at the View Arts Center in the Adirondacks of NY, and there is an opening reception on May 23 at 5-7pm, and the show runs from May 24 through July 27.

Ooooh, nice! Impromptu lichen appreciation thread? My addition: we just had rain so I saved these clumps that were on fallen branches, they keep my potted plants company now.

So, I encountered this special little item in a thrift store recently. This, my friends, is a strange abomination of fashion. Or is it genius? If only I could post a poll… Is it the weird offspring of a forbidden love between a confused preppy and one of those 1980s hair bands? Or is it FASHION?

Behold, it’s a skirt hanging on a rack. But this is a skirt that falls well below the knee, and is a type best described as “pleated, like a uniform for a Catholic school” — except that it is constructed of some kind of tan, artificial snakeskin.

May I add to the discussion? What would freakies taste like?

Image of a cereal box from the 1970s. Cereal is called “Freakies” and all the … are they mascots? I guess? Anyway the freakies depicted are 7 different weird little guys. One is red and looks like a grouchy crab another is kind of orange with lots of tentacles and he’s clinging to the tree branches (the box cover decent is a tree growing out of a hill made up of the Cheerios-like cereal, and there are 3 freakies in the tree and 4 on the hill underneath). There are 2 pink colored guys; one is rotund with a wide clam-like head, and another that’s similar to a dodo bird except just a proboscis like gonzo from the muppets. There’s a blue one up in the tree that seems like he’s all face, with no ears but a trunk like an elephant. And there are 2 green guys, one of whom looks kinda like a frog, but much more round? And another guy that’s just a round green dancing lump. Yes, they’re odd, if not actually attaining true freakishness.

Seen today up at the Crane Estate in Ipswich, MA: they’re making further progress on renovating the various formal gardens around the estate grounds.

Sign on a gate leading into a garden, which is actually undergoing renovation: sign reads “PLEASE KEEP THIS GATE CLOSED. The deer are hungry!”

This is a view of the garden — a turn of the century “formal garden” — on an English-style estate: there’s a semi circular walkway with benches and plantings and a fountain in the center of the lawn.

Oh yeah, I just remembered that I can share photos here and it won’t go to train someone’s shitty AI. Hey, #fungi people, I had a nice walk by the ocean today and along the path through the woods to get there, I found an earth star among the beds of #lichen.
