Trying to find traces of WW2 in Berlin and other places but also interested in other historical remnants. The long-term goal is to the read my city like a book. Usually my own photos. Also into genealogy.
WW1 section at the Schöneberg III cemetery on Stubenrauchstr. (Berlin-Schöneberg). Some families lost another relative in WW2.
Instead of asking why only the old facade at the corner of Oberwall-/Französische Str. (Berlin-Mitte) is standing, it should be asked why the modern Telekom building that already used the old facade on one side has been demolished - I do not know. (2nd pic: Google Streetview).
If you guessed Führerbunker, you wrre right. Might even be the location of the room where Adolf ended it all, based on the maps and the current buildings.
Not sure if I have posted this already but here is a short summary of the Battle of Berlin by the German Red Cross Tracing Service:
Demolition of the GDR “Vertragsarbeitersiedlung” (lit. “contract workers quarter”) on Gehrenseestr. (Berlin-Lichtenberg) has begun. The prefabricated buildings from the late 1970s for workers from Socialist countries such as Vietnam, Mozambique, and Cuba have been vacant for more than twenty years.
Not sure if they all have one. Here is a building on Oberlandstr., south of Tempelhof Airport.
Still don‘t know what to make of this building at Schnellerstr. 4 (Berlin-Niederschöneweide) which has a Nazi vibe about it. First I thought it was a Wehrmacht building, but the Berliner Adressbuch from 1940 (at that time Berliner Str. 4, I have checked) lists some companies as well as trade unions.
Two of the four carved stones on top of the Rixdorfer Höhe, one of the Trümmerberge (= rubble mountains) erected from WW2 debris. Due to the vegetation, this artificial hill in Hasenheide Park (Berlin-Neukölln) does not offer any views of the surroundings - which is a shame.
The Anti-War Memorial on Sachsendamm (Berlin-Tempelhof), dedicated to the "victims of the air war", was erected after the end of WW2 on the former site of the Tempelhof Reichsbahn repair works. Once a year, East-German Reichsbahn employees (the site lay in the American sector, however, (…)

Nur die Info des DRK-Suchdienstes: Lw. (Luftwaffe?) Werbetruppe Kdo. 3. Laut Bundesarchiv konnten diesbezüglich allerdings keine Einträge gefunden werden (mehrere entsprechende Vermerke auf den WASt-Karteikarten).
The U-Bahn station Kottbusser Tor (“K. Gate”, referring to a gate in the general direction of the city of Cottbus in the former Berlin customs wall from the 18th century that was demolished by 1870 & that then became the route of the U1 line) has currently been renamed “Cottbus Goooooooooooal”. ⚽️
Help appreciated: What can be deducted from this Wehrmacht photo of a relative MIA (from the Red Cross Vermisstenfotoliste, probably killed in or near Berlin in April 1945)?
The first successful air raid near the centre of Berlin in 1940 resulted in ten killed civilians, three of whom where buried at a cemetery nearby. The Nazis turned this into a propaganda show. - Part of my upcoming tour.
Interesting mix of old and new between Ostbahnhof station and Warschauer Str. station (Berlin-Friedrichshain).
It appears that the building with the memorial plaque can just about be seen at the right edge of your photo. Also, there is a very similar lantern standing where the one in your photo stood. The building with the name of the chocolate factory (Ferrero) is also still standing.
Heidelberger Str. is not only the border between the districts Neukölln & Treptow, for 28 years it also marked the border between East & West Berlin. In 1962 a tunnel allowed c. 50 people to escape, but on 27 March, people smuggler Heinz Jercha was killed by an East-German Stasi lieutenant.
Remains of the railyard west of Warschauer Brücke station (Berlin-Friedrichshain), a site that has been re-developed in the last 30 years and now houses among others a shopping center, an arena (for concerts & games), and restaurants. Several tall apartment buildings have recently been finished.
First eight seconds: flight eastward along the Landwehrkanal from the railyard south of Anhalter Bahnhof to Wilhelmstr. - I had not seen this before!
Luisenstadt Cemetary (Berlin-Kreuzberg) - no photo of war damage today (and there are plenty examples), just one of the park-like location bathed in today’s sunshine..
