The first of the year (for us) Papilio cresphontes (eastern giant swallowtail) feeding on Echinacea purpurea (purple coneflower). This was in the back garden. Hopefully it found the rue I planted in the front garden. We don't have room for any of the prickly ash group. #gardening #butterflies

We do still have a fair number of Crocus tommasinianus Herb. 'Ruby Giant' but we did plant 600 in December 2017. The squirrels seem to like eating these as well but the losses aren't as great as with other crocuses.
Some Crocus vernus (L.) Hill 'Pickwick' that have somehow evaded notice by the squirrels. We planted 120 in December of 2017. They're might be 20 that haven't yet become squirrel hors d'oeuvres. We still love our squirrels though!!!
Harvested the Senna marilandica (Maryland senna) seeds yesterday and got them mostly cleaned. Took a while. It's a decent flower, great pollen source for bees, and a larval foodplant for several moths and butterflies including Phoebis sennae (cloudless sulphur butterfly).
Unfortunately 2 nights ago we roasted the last two trays of chestnuts for the season. There can never be too many chestnuts!!!

Newly arrived at Aldi are the Winterliebe mulled bottled holiday wines. I prefer to make Glühwein if I have the time, but love being able to open a bottle, heat, and serve in less than 5 minutes. We hold some back for the coming year as well. Shown in the photos below are regular, cherry, & apple.
Newly arrived at my local Aldi are bottles of Petit Eggnog Wine Specialty and Petit Peppermint Bark. I haven't had the latter yet. The eggnog is made more boozy due to a bit of pure grain. 13.9% ABV. Aldi doesn't sell wine in all locations.

It's been a long while but I find myself missing the planning of a trip this time of year to Branson, Missouri to go to the Moon River Theatre to see the Andy Williams Christmas Show. We'd eat at his Moon River Grill right across the parking lot. Both were full of his art collection.
