🌸 they, them 🌸 just here for fun, but maybe I’ll post some textiles 🌸 DMs are open 🌸
I got a little scattered as the day went on, but these pieces have been accessioned and I have some groovy close up photos of them! With this magnifier you can really see the weave of the cloth, the bleeding of the inks, and the slits between colors
That had been my assumption when I first glanced at these objects as well! They are finely woven tapestries that utilize the slit technique and will be amazing examples for my tapestry class!
And for those familiar with rank badges, don’t worry— I’ve got the split piece as well!
I’m currently accessioning this gorgeous Qing dynasty rank badge and I just had to share it!
This is so real!!! I grew up just north of Cordele (watermelon capital of the world) and I always wondered how the watermelons survived their bus rides without exploding
Watched an uninspiring PSA by mayor Brandon Johnson about the poor air quality conditions due to the wildfire smoke and the heat wave this morning, and all I’m sayin is if the city wants us to be cautious they should consider bringing back the early pandemic Lori Lightfoot memes
These are samples of yarn a student made from their dogs’ fur! I really hope it’s a confidence that I started sneezing after taking these out of their bag 🤧
Working on accessioning some fiber samples today and this one is winning for my favorite so far! I was hoping I’d like the corn fiber more but it felt super plastic-y. I’ll be working with some dog fur yarns next! 🐶
When I worked in rural Appalachia, a squirrel got its leg caught in a mouse trap and I was able to take her to the May Wildlife Rehabilitation Center, but even then all that could be done was keep her comfortable as she passed 😭 you did the best you could for her!
In today’s episode of I Love Chicago™ I’d like to show off this vending machine where I bought tarot reading from at a Red Line stop the other day! This thing was filled with so many cool pieces of art and CTA themed tchotchkes, I definitely recommend keeping an eye out for it
What I felt like when I realized my students got me to talk about ghosts for 20 minutes instead of course related content
I came into work today and found these posters all over the place! Will you please submit what bird you are? docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1F...
The amount of self restraint I exerted just now to not pick up this pigeon was otherworldly 🐦
We have a Free Bin where folks can drop random materials and supplies to give away and I’m in love with today’s random piece of cloth left on top of the biggest Grainger catalog I’ve ever seen
Posting live from a Shelter In Place Drill and I can’t help but reminisce to high school when I experienced my longest shelter-in-place (not a drill) to date & I spent it knitting or trying to lie down semi-comfortably on my project bag of yarn. I’m currently in the loom room and it feels familiar
Me every day at work: y’all wanna see a jacquard weaving of Chairman Mao en route to Anyuan?
In advance of the Bears vs LA Rams game I just wanna say that I got a text just now from a friend saying that the bears coach has been having the boys train at night without the heaters on 🐻 sooooooo can’t wait to see how the Rams handle Chicago winter
There was not a speck of snow an hour and a half ago! 😱 As a southern transplant, I will never not be in awe of snow squalls and lake effect storms!
I recommended the Chicago Torture Justice Center in a thread I just posted, but I wanted to make a separate post to highlight one of their pieces of merch, which is a perfect shirt to wear to a protest! www.bonfire.com/knowyourrigh...
And visit the Art Institute of Chicago to see the textiles exhibition ‘On Loss and Absence’ and view the work of Dorothy Burge who has two pieces showcasing two survivors of Chicago police torture 🧵
Weaving Day 2 is going strong! Much different vibe than yesterday 🤗
Got pretty down to the wire with materials for this LOOOONG sign, but it’s done! This weaving will now stay on the loom for probably a week or two, then all the woven cloth will get cut off and the weavers will take our pieces
Currently sitting on the floor to stretch my hips and rest my feet, so here’s the weaving so far! I spent Christmas in Texas (first ever time there!) and encountered a highway sign I’ve never seen before! Any guesses as to which sign it is?
I have an entire duffel bag full of plush yarn for the main project of the day but also some cones of thinner thread for some samples I’ll do for what will likely be tomorrow’s weaving!
