Doctor. Scientist. Dog mom.
Now and then. Happy 7th adoptaversary to Shiloh - our little family’s heart and soul.
So sorry you’re going through this. Our path to getting our old dog Lewis’s lymphoma diagnosis was so incredibly stressful - fingers and toes crossed that you wind up at a manageable diagnosis and that Luigi feels better soon ❤️
Happy birthday/anniversary/new year!! Our party animals didn’t even make it to 9pm
By pure dumb luck we stumbled onto a Brian Wilson show at Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen in 2017. It was a surreal and totally cool end to a whirlwind, jet lagged trip. RIP to a great one.
Relationship milestone: after almost a year, Shiloh let Fredo use her as a pillow while sunbathing.

Normally I follow dogs/rescues on other social media and science/politics here. But this pittie in Gaston County, North Carolina has totally stolen my heart because she reminds me of Shiloh (if we let Shiloh eat to her heart’s desire). She is 6-8 yo, dog friendly, and she is running out of time.
Seems like today is going to be the third Friday in a row filled with extra, especially bad news on many fronts, so here is a 24 second timeline cleanse.
Inspired by @mitchroitman.bsky.social and @jamiedroitman.bsky.social to try a self-care Wednesday.
Beutler Lab hot pot last night. I am unbelievably fortunate to lead this group of kind, bright, curious, and fearless scientists. The future is so bright and worth fighting for.
Everything is terrible right now, and we have been looking for little bits of joy. So for Valentine’s Day I got us a custom cake from a local, woman-owned bakery with a fondant sculpture of Shiloh taking a bite out of it. Been smiling all day about this amazing, ridiculous splurge.
I channeled all of the holiday spirit I could muster into giving Shiloh her best Christmas/Hanukkah yet as she recovers from her second major orthopedic surgery of the year, and Fredo an amazing first holiday in his forever home. Happy holidays, everybody!!
It’s been a bit tough getting into the holiday spirit because it is our first Christmas without Lew, and we really thought we’d have many more. According to his records he was only about 7 or 8 when he passed this year but who knows. All I can say is…
It has been a challenging year for us but so much to be grateful for: @smbeutler.bsky.social moved (part time) to Chicago, we welcomed Fredo into our home, graduated my first PhD students, and the labs continue to grow and flourish. Excited for a weekend of eating and snuggling with these guys.
Dim sum to celebrate Carolyn’s last week in lab. My first grad student then post doc. It’s so hard to imagine the lab without her but we are all thrilled for her new job in DC!
Gonna give this place a try. Here for science, medicine, and dog content.
