Galactic civilizations have risen and fallen trying to enclose a star in a Dyson sphere. The leftover materials, structures and tools orbit the now cluttered system. A monument or a midden heap? Broken Interstellar is free on Smashwords until July 31st! www.smashwords.com/books/view/1...

The star Artist’s Offspring was the closest highly populated system to Dust Polish. The star had no planets but rather a large rich disk of protoplanetary matter. Given another few billion years, the cloud of matter could coalesce into a handful of planets.

The large disk of matter also made it a perfect candidate for the development of the first complete Dyson sphere, a hypothetical mega structure enclosing a whole star and capturing all of the energy contained within. Artist’s Offspring was such a good candidate that over millennia multiple civilizations had reached the system and begun construction on a section of the sphere, leaving their work behind them as their civilization fell and was swallowed by the tide of galactic history.

The result of this succession of incomplete construction projects was the Swarm. A vast number of space stations, giant construction ships, trading platforms, manufacturing plants and habitation modules all being abandoned, occupied and rebuilt over and over again in the swirling economy of the system as it drew in labour and materials to build the sphere.

“I watched some of your propaganda...”

“It’s not just propaganda. You flew off from Earth and returned to sell a small group of slave masters all the power you could gather for them in the stars,” Factor explained.

“The union and the oligarchs had the technology to reverse the ecological collapse of the planet, but the oligarchs wanted all of us starving, wanted to make sure the humans on Earth stayed as pathetically and helplessly dependent on them as possible. And the union simply didn’t care.”

It can be hard to map familiar concepts onto new experiences. Is the wasp alien giving you a sales pitch, a cult indoctrination, a history lecture? Is he the one trying to force a system on to the world that doesn't fit? Broken Interstellar, free until July 31st!

“My hive tasked itself with study and learning. My queen had a particular interest in history, both higher and alien. She dispatched me with my imps to other planets and outposts to study the beings living there. At first I found separation from the hive traumatic. I missed my queen, and my fellow sages. I found alien worlds chaotic and frustrating. Each trip, I would lose at least one imp, wasted away from home sickness.”
“That’s...awful. I didn’t realize imps can literally die from separation from the hive.” Temper felt ill at ease. The setting and conversation was bringing up shreds of memory of sales pitches. His instincts were telling him to run, but he couldn’t tell if that was mnemonic vertigo or a good idea. He sat on a stool at the briefing table.
“In the history of other species, I observed upheavals of established orders, attempted or successful. For all the history of higher hives there has only been

one change in our society worthy of the same examination, the realization of the Empress. In ancient times, when queens of different hives first began to work in concert, we began to see our species as a single great hive. And so, as a sage becomes a queen when a hive needs one, it came to be realized that there would be a layer above that, that one day a queen would enter the state of change and become The Empress. We waited for generations and when higher society on a single planet proved to not be complex enough, we began our conquest of the galaxy, hoping to create a society grand enough to bring The Empress into existence.“
“But, surely you understood the biological triggers of the stages of life in your own species by that time?”
“I am not speaking of biology, I am speaking of universal rules of society.”
“There are no universal rules of society,” Temper objected.
“My hive’s studies disagree, in my travel I noted that the trinity of queen, sage

$and imp repeated in different forms across the galaxy. It was clearly resonating a cosmic truth. There were always leaders, thinkers and workers. Those that set the course, those that formulated the plan and those that executed it.” “What about the tree kissed?” Temper interrupted the sermon. Or sales pitch. His context for the conversation kept flipping back and forth as his memories spun. “A society of imps, the lack of sages and queens is why they can only pretend to galactic culture by stealing the technology of other species.” “I’m not sure if that’s fair...” Temper began but the Sage didn’t pause. “The relationship is fractal, reproducing itself at every level. Biospheres develop conscious beings that are able to guide the ecosystem. Societies of thinking beings require leadership, enforcement and obedience. Even your helping hands Postal Service has this structure.”$

Chapter 5

Temper’s terror at a giant spider pinning him to the ground while it shrieked in his face was immediately met with confusion. There was no such thing as a giant spider, spiders are from earth. Earth spiders are tiny little things.

He looked up at the creature, gigantic and terrifying and recognition flooded him, and then relief. It was a kind eyes. A totally different organism that through the coincidences of interplanetary convergent evolution had the physiology of a giant spider. They were also humanity’s first contact, oldest trading partner and closest neighbour. This one was angry, but it didn’t appear dazed like the long walk. They could communicate.

I cannot judge. This goof on imdb was mine to make.

At the last scene of the movie the missing soldier, portrayed by actor Tammy Gillis, is returned to her family at an airport. A large American flag is hanging vertically on the outside wall of a hangar. The flag is improperly oriented, with the blue field of stars to the right. When the flag is displayed the blue field is always to be to the viewers left, just as when it is flying on a pole. When displayed properly in the vertical orientation it does look backwards to many people, which could explain the mistake, also that the film was made in Canada

If your travelling near lightspeed, time passes slowly for you. History keeps going though, and before you know it you can barely understand another human, separated from them by centuries. What I'm saying is, stay away from home too long and you become the otherworldly being.

“Gaia is not our leader, she is our ecosystem and society and selves.” Temper still had no idea what the word ‘Gaia’ meant but the more he spoke to Factor the more interstellar shook loose in his mind.

“Like, a religion?” he dug back as far as he could. “A cultural practice or set of ideas that seeks to grasp at things beyond material reality.”

“No, its not like the Interstellar union’s concepts of solidarity and spacer cooperation, Gaia is exactly as real as you and I. Gaia is you and I.” Temper was insulted but also thrilled to have apparently comprehended enough interstellar to catch the insult to the union.

“Solidarity and spacer cooperation is real. If you have free skilled spacers and a desire to trade interstellar eventually those spacers are going to realize that they have more in common with each other than their bosses planetside. The next helping hands you meet coming from Earth will likely be telling you about your Postal Service unionizing.” Factor grinned in a way that brought to Temper’s mind images of predators.

“Every union member I’ve ever met or encountered has communicated that to me. You, the being I am addressing, admit you know nothing of your life but are still certain of the superiority and permanence and inevitability of your union belief system. You, and your union, cannot comprehend working for any larger cause than your own enrichment. You impose the relationship of boss and worker on to everything. You instrumentalize, turn to machines, your own brain matter so you can accomplish work shifts measured in decades. So you can participate in heat death economics.”

He’d make a great coming home meal for Blue!” The tree kissed yelled at the medic’s backs before turning around. “Temper! How’s my favourite helping hands terrorist? Where’s Blue and the cop?”
“I think Blue’s in the cargo hold, my spiky gamete,” Factor said to Steep as she walked in from the cockpit. Steep harumphed.
“Congratulations, you finally learned something about my species. And immediately tried to use it to insult me. You never change cop.” Factor’s mouth fell open.

Here's context a few paras down: He wasn't disciplined for 'playing british bulldog' he was disciplined for creeping out multiple students. But we get a headline that more easily runs toward "kids today are too sensitive" than "is this guy a sex pest?"

Resistance was a long time ago, at great cost, and left deep and bitter scars. But they did win, so there's that. (They may have gone on to recreate that same struggle in perpetuity, looking for more enemies to fight to prop up a militant cult, but that's a matter of opinion.)

“No living member of the interstellar union would even be aware of this.” An angry look flickered across Factor’s face.

“We are very aware of it. We grow up in the ruins from a war that your weapons sales made possible. You can still see the scars orbital platforms burned across continents when you fly over. I’ve seen photos of forests and jungles overgrown in Earth’s history; all our trees grow in rows where we planted them. It’ll be eons before the planet will be able to support life without human energy and effort propping it up. That’s what we spend the first 100 years of our lives doing. Paying back the debt left us to Gaia by our ancestors.” She stared at him, looking for a reaction.
