Small herbivore from America living in New Zealand. Spending my brief time on Earth trying to save the wild things. I used to drive race cars.
Finally going through our photos from our trip to Costa Rica last December. This tiny feathered jewel is a Rufous-tailed Hummingbird, photo by @uskiwi13.bsky.social
For those of you old enough to remember Ferdinand the Bull, one of my favorite childhood stories ♥️
POV: After the 2024 U.S. election, you decided to sell your house, your car, most of your belongings and move 8000 miles away. You are very happy.
I’m head over heels in love with my beautiful new country. I left everything I’ve ever known to move to the other side of the world & every day I wake up grateful that I was brave enough to take that leap. I miss good people I left behind, but I do not miss the chaos of America at all, not one bit.
39 days since our arrival and New Zealand just keeps blowin’ my socks off
The Blue Spring in Aotearoa New Zealand is the most crystal clear blue freshwater I have seen in my entire life. It is comforting to see some of these rare wild places humanity has preserved 🩵
Paradise on Earth, also known as The Blue Spring in Aotearoa New Zealand. The most crystal clear water I have seen in my entire life. Unreal.
Feeling so grateful to be a new resident of beautiful Aotearoa New Zealand. I feel like I’m in a dreamland, like I’m living inside a screensaver. Surreal beauty that looks fake in photos because it’s *too perfect.* Falling head over heels in love with the country 24 years after falling for the man 💚
The Aotearoa New Zealand night sky is ✨ quite spectacular ✨ Goodnight, friends. 💫
I made my first forest friend in Aotearoa, New Zealand! We were walking deep in the forest (they say “bush” here) when this adorable, very tiny, very round and friendly Pīwakawaka (New Zealand Fantail) flew right up to us and landed on a fern about 2 feet from my face. This beautiful place is known by a few different names. Aotearoa. New Zealand. The Land of the Long White Cloud. Middle Earth. But my favorite is: My new home. 🇳🇿
We did it! We sold our house, our cars, most of our belongings & boarded a one way flight for New Zealand! Longer threads are harder to post here (maybe that’s on me) so I’m sharing by way of screenshots instead. Got attacked by tons of MAGA trolls & bots for this on Threads but I hate them anyway 🤷🏻♀️
Rose-breasted Grosbeak, a rare visitor to our backyard. We usually only see them briefly for a day or two during the spring and fall migration. This was my only action shot today and sadly I didn’t zoom out in time. The bird arrived here on the *exact same day* it did last year: April 27.
Hi everyone, I slid on my back across sharp sticks and leaves while barefoot to get this photo of a gorgeous Red-shouldered Hawk that landed in our backyard today, so please look at my picture 😁
“In pushing other species to extinction, humanity is busy sawing off the limb on which it perches.” — Paul R. Ehrlich I hope you are still chasing the butterflies, wherever you are. 🦋 Rest in peace, Professor.
Have you ever seen the movie Contact? The movie was based on the novel by Carl Sagan and the character of Dr. Ellie Arroway (played by Jodie Foster) was based on Carl’s friend, the astronomer Jill Tartar. Jill is famous for her work searching for life beyond Earth with SETI.
Beautiful tribute to Bobby at the Grammys tonight. Husband to Natascha. Father to Monet and Chloe. Guitarist, singer, and songwriter to the soundtrack to the lives of millions of people all over the world. The first Dead show my big sister Natascha brought me to was in 1986,
I just saw a documentary so powerful I had to do my first movie review on Letterboxd. Please visit checkpointzoo.com to watch the trailer and see if this incredible film is coming to a theater near you. Honestly I haven’t felt this strongly about a film since The Cove came out in 2009.
I met a tiny green spider today. It jumped on my hand & I got the impression they wanted to hang out because it took some coaxing to get them off my hand. Maybe they had heard from the other spiders in the neighborhood that when they come in our house, we never hurt them & instead catch them with…
Happy #worldorcaday! Posting a memory from 2014 when I raced Talladega in the #Blackfish race car to raise awareness about the documentary & the suffering of cetaceans in captivity. The tv commentators on Fox Sports called my race car the “ARCA Orca” and we nicknamed the weekend Tillydega in honor…🧵
My other half and I have become amateur birders over the past five years. He’s traveling for work and, I must say, I’m quite envious of some of the birds he encounters on his travels. Yesterday he had these amazing Azure-winged Magpies flying around him in Shanghai. 📷 by @uskiwi13.bsky.social
Texas is heavily gerrymandered (like many so-called "red" states). Texas cast over 4.8 million votes for Kamala in November. It would be helpful for everyone to remember that all 50 states are different shades of purple - none of them are red or blue. Signed, a blue dot in South Carolina
I mourn for our country. I mourn for the 17 million Americans who just lost their healthcare, the 18 million children who just lost school lunches, and the 3.5 million struggling Americans that just lost food assistance. I mourn for the immigrants who came here dreaming of a better life.
The AmerExit subreddit has 150k+ members discussing emigration from the United States for a better life with healthcare, no mass shootings and less fascism. Happy fourth 🫠
If you’re like me, you have a drawer filled with more twist ties than you could ever need. I have good news! You can upcycle them along with produce tags 🏷️ with TagBack! Address in photo & list of local drop off locations at tagback.com. Small actions, multiplied by millions, add up to big impact! ♻️
I’m just a girl, standing in front of America, asking what the fuck is going on and why are the stupidest people among us running our government?
Mr. Thiel, do you have any comments about Palantir’s surveillance of the American people, sir? You’re setting up a Big Brother surveillance system and people know it, sir. People are waking up to what you’re doing there, sir.” And just like that, Dan Dicks (the cameraman) became an American hero.
