Just popped my head out of the kitchen door for no particular reason to be greeted with this fabulous Oak Eggar female alighting at the base of one of dad's garden plants. Ravensden (VC30). #TeamMoth
Xanthorhoe ferrugata (Dark-barred Twin-spot Carpet) overnight 22 July 2026, Cheadle Towers (VC39). Only my 3rd record. #TeamMoth
Phalera bucephala (Buff-tip) larvae on Oak, Putney Heath, SW London (VC17). #TeamMoth
Uncinus obductlla (Marjoram Knot-horn), indoors, 12 July 2026, Putney Heath, SW London (VC17). Not the first site record of this rare but increasing resident pyralid. #TeamMoth
Yponomeuta rorrella overnight 8 July 2026, Putney Heath, SW London (VC17). #TeamMoth
Eurasian Spoonbill (Platalea leucorodia), 19 June 2026, Tittesworth Reservoir, Staffordshire. Digiscoped, and a bit of post. #UKBirding
Terrible images of what is believed to be a worn Sloe Pug (Pasiphila chloreata), overnight 17 June, Cheadle Towers (VC39). #TeamMoth
Marbled White (Melanargia galathea), B660 roadside, Ravensden, Bedford (VC30) - 1 of 3 just now, 15 June. #UKButterflies
No exotic migrant moths in either my Staffordshire/SW London traps; however, it is great to see so many fellow moth-ers recording them - especially recent newcomers to the hobby. 👍 [Image: 29 May 2002, Fenny Stratford (VC24)] #TeamMoth #MothsMatter
The local Red Kite over Ravensden, Bedford, this morning. Also in residence a Lesser Whitethroat singing in earshot of my dad's home. #UKBirding
Hobby (Falco subbuteo) over my garden, Putney Heath, SW London. Always a delight to see them. #UKBirding #UKWildlife
Wishing Sir David Attenborough a very Happy 100th Birthday! Here's a photo I took of him during a short, private session back in 2007, when Sir David announced the introduction of Butterfly Conservation's National Moth Recording Scheme at the Zoological Society of London. >>> #TeamMoth
Does anyone recognise this mine on Birch? I have my thoughts but I believe it would be too early. Putney Heath, SW London. #TeamMoth
Probable Nomada goodeniana (Gooden's Nomad Bee) at rest, Putney Heath, SW London.
Yours truly navigating the Shropshire Union (Llangollen arm) from Fenn’s, Whixall & Bettisfield Mosses to Ellesmere this weekend #narrowboat #Shropshire
Epichnopterix plumella (Plumed Bagworm) on-the-wing this afternoon, Putney Heath, SW London (VC17). #TeamMoth
While birding this morning on Putney Heath, I noticed a white micro-moth flying around Gorse. It settled and I managed to get a smartphone shot. Unless I'm mistaken, this is a male Grapholita internana (White-underwing Piercer), which would constitute a very good Surrey/London record. #MothsMatter
Abrostola triplasia (Dark Spectacle) overnight, 16 April 2025, Putney Heath, SW London (VC17). #TeamMoth
Anticlea derivata (Streamer) overnight Cheadle Towers, Staffordshire (VC39). In pristine condition and new for the garden... which is nice! #TeamMoth
Colostygia multistrigaria (Mottled Grey) overnight, Putney Heath, SW London (VC17). Not a common or abundant moth in Surrey or SW London. #MothsMatter
A replacement bin for my home-made Robinson moth trap back at Putney Heath Towers - £9.99 from ALDI. No comment re last night's Cheadle Towers stats 🤦♂️ ##MothsMatter
Stigmella glutinosae/alnetella on Alder. The key on British leafminers favours the former, but both mines are vacated. I suspect this one's not doable. Wimbledon Common (VC17). @vc28nature.bsky.social #MothsMatter
Asteroscopus sphinx (Sprawler) male, overnight 13 November 2025, Putney Heath, SW London (VC17). I've had a few of these too recently! #MothsMatter
