I’m an Iowan by choice twice-over, elected to represent District 89 in the State House of Representatives.
Absolute best part was Skip- one of the most awesome electrical engineers in the world- who taught a five hour intro to EVERYTHING power!
I've just finished up the first session- 5 days at Pacific Northwest National Lab on electricity generation, transmission, delivery, regulation, history, and trends! (Yes, lots of conversation about data centers!) Can't wait to take my knowledge back home and start asking ALL the ??s in my notes!
Four years ago, a friend from another state recommended I apply for LEHI, a policy institute DEEP DIVE on energy systems, science, and policy- it's a serious commitment, and this was the first year when the schedule worked with my life, so I put together the strongest application I could!
#NationalNightOut- Wetherby Park Tues, Aug 4 5:30–8:00 p.m. #iadist89 Community favorites we've come to enjoy: -free hot dogs and brats -live music & entertainment >25 community orgs from across JoCo Fun, family-friendly event with face painting, juggler, bounce house, and interactive booths!
The best presentation was from the outgoing #teacheroftheyear, Ashlee Crosson, of Pennsylvania. I caught up with her afterwards for a great conversation.
The #NationalForumonEducationPolicy is ALWAYS a highlight of my year, and running into awesome Iowans there makes it all that much better! (Especially when you've accidentally coordinated your outfits!) Leon and Darice, thank you for ALL the work you're doing!
The closest I could get to seeing #thewhitehouse while in DC from any side.
I've never before had this chance, and I'm so lucky the weather allowed it.
2 days in DC. One free evening to explore the National Mall monuments. WWI, WWII, Korea, Vietnam, Lincoln, Jefferson, MLKJr... a lot to think about, honor, and love up to and past.
I talk often about the comparatively low turnout in my own neighborhood. Statewide, 26 primary turnout was 19.1% Johnson County did better-22.5%. My neighborhood? IC10 16.74% IC27 18.04% I'll be knocking around the neighborhood when I can, ensuring folks have the info they need to participate!
Despite serving 4 years on our Ed Budget, I've barely spent any time at Iowa State, so I took the opportunity today! Got an updated tour of the vet diagnostic lab, learned about the digital ag innovation lab, toured the industrial engineering building, and touched grass on Jack Trice Field!
"Discuss disability policy, representation, and issues most important to Disabled Iowans! All are welcome." ♿What: Disability Pride Month Candidates Forum 🗓️When: July 23, 7pm CT 👥Who: Iowa Disability Caucus + State and Local Candidates across Iowa 📍Where (copy & paste): uiowa.zoom.us/j/98338883386
Glad to hear, specifically, about insurance challenges, and the ways that they're trying to give access to new and interested young farmers.
So grateful to Beth and John for taking time to help me understand their farm. I still don't know as much as I would like about raising animals outside of confinement. Their cattle and goats were extremely welcoming. Especially the goats. 🐐
Grateful to Barn Wired in #SigourneyIA for being a great breakfast stop on my drive this morning! It sounds like 4th of July weekend was a very busy one for them, but they were still open bright and early and so friendly and helpful!
While I LOVE knocking doors all over Iowa, there's nothing like knocking on a door and saying, "I'm your state representative, and I'm out today to hear what's on your mind!" #seenwhiledoorknocking #iadist89
Great moments from the parades yesterday in Coralville, Oxford, & Hills! Always fun to see friends out to celebrate!
Stopped at the IC Farmers Market for breakfast before heading off to the Coralville parade!
When I think about transgender players in sports, I picture a ten-year-old who just wants to run around, compete, and play with her friends. A kid who let her family know she was a girl starting at the age of three, who's been living as a girl since she was five. 1/6
Looking for a meaningful way to celebrate July 4? Take a free, short, nonpartisan Harvard online course on the U.S. Constitution. Our 250th anniversary on July 4 offers a timely opportunity for residents to reflect on the principles that unite us as Americans. www.edx.org/learn/govern...
We can't keep doing the same things and expecting different results! It's not fair to current Iowans and not fair to our future. I want to pass the Aldo Leopold Amendment, which guarantees a right to a clean environment in our state constitution - because we all depend on water, air, and soil.
The lovely Lake Darling is right on my way home on this very hot day, and swimming in it is not recommended, and hasn't been for years. The worst part? Iowa taxpayers spent millions to clean up this lake, and it took a very short period of time before it was back to the exact same status.
I was so excited to make it to a little bit of Fairfield Pride with Tom O'Donnell! And very grateful that they had moved their picnic indoors, so that I could cool down a little! Rep. Aime Wichtendahl was there, too, hearing from queer Iowans who are often victimized by their local state rep.
And, I always love a chance to bop around Fairfield. It has such a cool, creative, distinct vibe. Delightful doors in Fairfield for the Tom O'Donnell 4 #IAHD87 and Christina Bohannan campaigns!
When I think about #ConsiderCompassion, there is no contrast more stark than Tom O'Donnell compared to Jeff Shipley. It would be such a daily delight to have someone who cares so much come join me in the #ialegis. And, did I mention that he is a journalist and science writer? 🤩
When the assignment is "red, white, and blue" I got this covered! Great to get to know, among others, Xavier Carrigan, who just wrapped up a run for #IACD2!
May for Iowa fundraiser- 10/10, would travel for again!! India's passion, common sense, and intentionality are so desperately needed in this seat- if you can offer time, talent, or treasure to help her flip #IAHD58, connect with her!! Plus, she's spends her energy lifting up everyone around her!
Sometimes, it's just about finding a few minutes to bake bread. What's your favorite activity for relaxation?
I’m proud to, once again, earn the Planned Parenthood North Central States endorsement! I pledge to defend and protect access to sexual and reproductive health care, because all Iowans deserve the power to make decisions for their own bodies and futures. 1/2
