Colson Whitehead is a freaking genius. And his Harlem Trilogy is so complex--funny, exciting, violent, gory, wise, insightful and historically on the button. Here's my review for the @irishtimes.com in which I try not to gush. I think it'll be online soon but here it is in lovely print.
I was watching this female duck lead a string of ducklings away from the lake and I wondered why. And then... disaster. My substack is here: lauriehertzel.substack.com/p/crossing-t...
Look how adorable my fearful dog is. And I realized this morning that he's simply not as fearful as he once was. It's good to take inventory now and then, and notice progress. #fearfuldogs #reactivedog #angus lauriehertzel.substack.com/p/what-me-af...
Holy crap! Indigo bunting and rose breasted grosbeak sharing a meal in my yard
This blew me away. Of all the books coming out this week, @theatlantic.com chose mine to highlight? I don't even want to know how they chose it (maybe someone bribed them?). It's amazing!
Who would have thought we'd need a fundraiser for the kind tow truck driver who is rescuing the cars left behind--sometimes engines still running--after ICE kidnapped the driver? Fundraiser tomorrow in MPls or please donate. www.tiktok.com/@leos.tow/ph... www.cbsnews.com/minnesota/ne...
Hey! @coryoldweiler.bsky.social and me, together again, in the pages of @bostonglobe.com globe!
Oh, the time of self promotion is upon me and here are some fabulous blurbs for my new memoir, GHOSTS OF FOURTH STREET, which is available for preorder at any bookstore or bookshop dot org near you.
We interrupt all this dire news to announce that I HAVE A COVER OF MY NEW BOOK. It will pub in March 2026 with the @uminnpress.bsky.social . So happy to work with this great press again. And you will be happy to know that the title is not misleading--there are REAL GHOSTS in this book.
"But the people have no bread to eat!" "Let them eat cake. And admire our beauty and good taste."
This is part of the crowd--not the whole thing, mind you, but maybe half--from today's 'canceled' #nokings march and rally in St. Paul, Minnesota. @indivisible.org @50501movement.bsky.social
events canceled in Minnesota due to the murders of two politicians but THOUSANDS TURNED OUT ANYWAY.
This is the homemade sign that moved me the most. Minnesota will not be stopped. America will not be stopped. #NoKIngs
The No Kings events were canceled in Minnesota because of the murders but we went anyway. And wow, it was huge!
Couple of photos from yesterday's march and rally in St. Paul, Minn. More than 10,000 (i'd say more like 15,000, but 10,000+ is the official estimate).
An estimated 25,000 at the St. Paul, Minn., #handsoff protest. Amazing. Great signs, great enthusiasm, great mood.
After months away, I decided to try the Spelling Bee this morning. FIRST WORD it tells me this. So I'm done. (Again.)
Testing drug protocols for this extremely anxious dog in advance of his next vet visit. The stuff we gave him today made him woozy but also very bold. He just walked into the kitchen, casually took a dinner toll right off the table and went upstairs with it. He’s never done anything like that before
Should I be concerned that I can't sign onto the Social Security web page? It says it's not available...
This probably won’t help, but I heard and then saw this bluebird in the park today even in all this snow
