Tour de Fleece check in! i just finished spinning the green singles, and only 2 more colors to go in this set. I am really pumped to knit a sweater with it.

It's been a minute since I posted a Tour de Fleece update! Spinning this set from Inglenook Fibers has been a real pleasure. I'm about halfway through the colors now.

I've been cataloging a large donation of Mongolian books. I do not speak, read, or write Mongolian so this is A Process. The next time someone says they're learning a language or translating with AI though, I want to show them this. Tag yourself, I'm As usual. Holy boy is my favorite.

Here is how I responded, for transparency. I'm very grateful to everyone who's pushed back on Deb's email this morning. And very sad that autocat has ended up administered by one person.

Thank you to everyone who’s had time to reply this morning. I’ve had the honor of being able to speak with people on the Indigenous Headings Consultation Group, and I’m grateful for their work. As some people on this list may know, at San Francisco Public Library we use a lot of local headings, many of which were created to attempt to redress issues with current LCSH about Indigenous Peoples. I’m grateful for the work of the Indigenous Headings Consultation Group and I’m looking forward to implementing the changes they’ve made here at SFPL.

As library and information professionals, I think one of our roles is to guide and teach people, and this includes guiding people towards terminology that people use to describe themselves. I find that most people here in the Bay Area prefer Indigenous Peoples, in part due to the advocacy and teaching of many of my colleagues who recommend books by Indigenous Peoples, and open events with a land acknowledgement for the Ramaytush Ohlone, the original people of the San Francisco peninsula.

As someone who’s also worked on a large subject heading project, it’s difficult work. A lot easier to criticize that work rather than do it. I hope my cataloging colleagues will join me in thanking the Indigenous Headings Consultation for their hard and very necessary work.

Is there anyone else who feels the change from the SH Indians to Indigenous peoples is a step backward - at least for public and school libraries?

When a person comes in to a public or school library - they may ask for Indians, Native Americans, or American Indians (ie the terms used in newspapers and television programs). They would never think to ask for or look up Indigenous peoples - except perhaps for works covering multiple indigenous groups around the world.

Indians had a understood concept of "American" which has been totally abandoned by LC - once again rendering it less useful to the outside world.

Also once hopes we won't end up with more headings like "Alaska Natives $z Alaska" which I, for one, think is implied .....

On the basis of this change, I have some big doubts of the upcoming changes to "Indians of North America"
