eye poem (2016). An embroidery of the venations of the eye stitched in blues, greens, and purples on bone coloured cloth. In a circle outlining the eye is a poem that can be read starting on any word: behind her blue green eyes were fine lace webs so she could see purple mist opening.

paresthesia (face) 2016. An embroidery of the outline of a face in bone coloured thread on bone coloured linen. The forehead, cheeks, jaws, and temples are covered in filigree lines in dark blues, greens, and yellows showing sensations of paresthesia/tingling. There are French knots spaced out along the lips. Lines of beige strands of thread are strung from the knots across the face in a geometric formation to show tension around the mouth.

the wandering ghost (2024). An image of a vagus nerve embroidered on green cotton. The main nerve lines, brain, and face are in blue. A bright red anatomical heart is below the blue nerves. Around it is a bright golden yellow halo in a vesica piscis shape. Three sets of ribs are in bright green/yellow. There are some tiny details in different colours along some of the nerves. Burgundy roiling with sparse tiny black knots are in the gut. The nerve endings in the diaphragm area are lengthened.

mitosis sampler: summer (2024). Two reproductive cells dividing embroidered on off-white linen. The edges of the dividing egg cells and the nucleus membranes are in bright acid green split stitch. A circle of dark green stem stitch is started for the cell membrane. The corona radiata is in sage green zig zag chain stitch. The nucleolus of each cell is in sage green bullion stitch. The polar bodies are stitched in purple single strand back stitch. The cytoplasm is in variegated dark to bright green thread in a mix of seed stitch and French knots. Lia’s initials are stitched in off white whipped back stitch on the lower right.

#WIPWednesday • Finished supernova remnant SNR 0509-67.5 for my largest belly mole so you get a full photo today! I plan on stitching the smaller moles before I do my other surgical scars. #SciArt #embroidery

Filled Practice/Project/Process Journal LXXI (7 January to 7 July 2026) and started PPP LXXII . Brain sticker was a gift and the rib cage sticker I bought so long ago I forget who made it.

Two MUJI black hardcover ring bound B6 sized journals sit on a desk. The left one has a sticker of the bottom of a brain and the right one has a sticker of a rib cage with plants growing out of it.

It’s #LeakWeek for Spinal CSF Leak Awareness. Here’s my #SciArt #embroidery sensorium (2016) featuring a spine. CSF leaks are common in the #MECFS community but often go undiagnosed. More information here: spinalcsfleak.org

In the centre of some bone white linen, there is a spine embroidery in thick satin stitch. Emanating from the spine are thick burgundy lines in an undulant oval shape. This oval is bisected across the middle. In the top half, there is a section outlined in burgundy filled with coiling blue lines and a similar section in the bottom half. The rest of the undulant oval is filled with fine coiling burgundy lines. The spine is very straight, the rest of the embroidery is very coiled and busy. Lia’s initials are stitched in fine thread the same colour as the cloth at the bottom right.

A pear and an apple cut in slices on a black plate and held together with toothpicks. The pieces look a bit like a messy sculpture because they’re not aligned properly.

Hello from the hospital, where I have so many windows! Last year I was in a basement room so this is a huge relief. Yes, it’s my liver giving me trouble again.

Some large windows on the left meet some angled windows on the ceiling through which can be seen some skylights through the blinds. There’s a greyish hospital curtain on the bottom right of the photo.

I got myself a speedweve #darning loom! I probably could have chosen an easier #mending project than a delicate cashmere blend scarf to try it out on but I’m pretty pleased with how it turned out. I still need to work on making neater edges but that’s just practice. #VisibleMending

For #BrainAwarenessWeek I’m sharing my brainiest #SciArt #embroidery pieces. Here’s woman in skull (2016), not a brain per se, but the part of the skull where the brain sits, imagined as an architectural space.

An embroidery on bone coloured linen of the inside of a human skull looking down from a cut open top done in thin black thread. The textures make it look like the Vesalius woodcut it is based on. In the bottom left corner of the skull there is the tiny silhouette of a woman done in bronze thread.

For #BrainAwarenessWeek I’m sharing my brainiest #SciArt #embroidery pieces. Here’s neuraesthenia (2017), a piece depicting the heaviness I feel during post-exertional malaise (PEM). PEM often starts in my cognition then spreads out through my body.

An embroidery on pale natural linen. The pale outline of a woman’s lower legs and feet, heels together, toes apart is centered. From the soles of the feet, thick red/orange lines coil beneath. From the big toes moving upwards, thick blue and off-white lines rise up through the inner calves and branch off at the knees. These lines coil and intertwine in a navy brain-like shape, and then move back down in wavy lines like a wide skirt around the ankles.

For #BrainAwarenessWeek I’m sharing my brainiest #SciArt #embroidery pieces. Here’s a detail from the wandering ghost (2024), my piece about the vagus nerve and my experiences with polyvagal theory.

The facial nerves are stitched in single strand chain stitch and back stitch. A thin dark purple line entwines the nerve on the forehead and some curved light green lines emanate from the eye.
