Liberal Democrats for Electoral Reform (LDER)
@libdems4er
Campaigning to fix UK politics through fair votes. An affiliated organisation of the Liberal Democrats - the party leading the fight for PR for decades, but now with 72 MPs! We also work proactively cross-party & with like-minded others to deliver change.
When politics lacks collaboration and accountability, everyone loses. At a local and national level, it is clear that good policies are only ever born from good politics - if we want change, we have to change the system. Tell us what you think: digitallibdems.typeform.com/fix-politics
Today, Burnham became our 7th PM in 10 years. He says he wants to fix politics. We believe if we are going to fix politics we have to fix the engine that drives it: the voting system. What do you think is needed? Take our survey: digitallibdems.typeform.com/fix-politics
Fair votes are long overdue. Around the world, more proportional electoral systems are used to positive effect. In Europe, for example, proportional systems often result in lower average polarisation. Is it time for change? Tell us what you think: digitallibdems.typeform.com/fix-politics
If First Past the Post leaves so many votes 'wasted', can we really say that politics is fair for everyone? Rebuilding political trust might only be possible if we rethink the system itself. Tell us what you think: digitallibdems.typeform.com/fix-politics
Even those who have benefitted from our electoral system can see that it is unfair. Democracy relies on difference, not 100% majorities. It is clear that when our votes don't count, nobody 'wins'. Tell us what you think in our survey: digitallibdems.typeform.com/fix-politics
Democracy is a system where everyone's voice should an impact. but is this really the care when when governments win huge majorities with only 34% of the votes? We believe that First Past the Post undermines democracy - do you? Tell us what you think: digitallibdems.typeform.com/fix-politics
For a long time, our electoral system has incentivised division & short termism. It is time for change. We believe proportional representation will open the door for more collaboration politics needs - do you agree? Tell us what you think: digitallibdems.typeform.com/fix-politics
People have often argued First Past the Post creates stable governments. Is that how we’d describe the last decade of British politics? Stable? Really? We think its time for change and the old arguments have run out of road - but tell us what you think: digitallibdems.typeform.com/fix-politics
With only 33% of the vote Labour were never going to have majority support for big changes - and its likely to be even worse next time. Can we can fix the big challenges in this country if no government can get majority support? Tell us what you think: digitallibdems.typeform.com/fix-politics
First Past the Post with 5 or more parties running - means each party only has to appeal to a small % of the population. Do you think thats ok? Yes? no? Do you think politicians should try and reach out across communities? Take our short survey today: digitallibdems.typeform.com/fix-politics
Did your vote make a difference in the last election? Are you one of the minority who has a representative that they believe speaks for them? Let us know - fill in the short survey to tell us if you think politics is working: digitallibdems.typeform.com/fix-politics #fairvotes #fixpolitics
Do you think our voting system should be updated to reflect the political reality? Voters clearly choosing from more parties than ever before - but system was designed when there were really only two parties Is it time for change? Tell us what you think: digitallibdems.typeform.com/fix-politics

"But PR will let the extremists win" No. PR means all views will be represented fairly. Including minorities, and yes people with views that we vehemently disagree with. But it is First Past the Post which can hand a party absolute power on a small minority of the vote.
Jokes about being supreme leader of Richmond aside: Gareth knows first hand how important genuine scrutiny is. How important it is for a diversity of views to be heard in our councils - and in Parliament Fairer systems bring greater balance to debate - they make sure more voices are heard. 1/2🧵
London Assembly has passed a Lib Dem motion calling for fair votes with cross party support from Greens, Labour and Conservatives. Gareth Roberts moved the motion, while noting the absurdity of his position as leader of Richmond council, with 100% Lib Dem Councillors but only 51% of the vote

A light-hearted way to make a serious point: No democracy should allow a party to get 100% of the seats on 50% of the votes Whether you agree or disagree, take our survey to have your say: digitallibdems.typeform.com/fix-politics

Andy Burnham has been unequivocal about the damage being done by First Past the Post. If he was serious when he said "politics is broken" in his acceptance speech - he needs to get on and fix our politics, before the next general election. #fixpolitics #fairvotes #politics #andyburnham
If we want to fix the sewage crisis - we need to fix politics. Read Roz Savage MP's article explaining why the political system is the reason we continue to pump sewage into our rivers. fairvoteswatch.substack.com/p/lets-fix-p... #politics #sewage #rivers #fixpolitics #fairvotes
Fair Voting systems do not lead to paralysis - and they can deliver progress. First Past the Post is delivering nothing but instability and chaos. Fix politics so we can fix the country. #politics #makevotesmatter #fairvotes #fixpolitics
"Even if I lose my own seat" Liberal Democrats will back Fair Votes - no matter the consequences for us - because its the right thing to do. #Politics #fairvotes #fixpolitics #makevotesmatter

"This isn't just a nerdy thing - this is about changing our politics" Olly Glover making the point on Politics Home Podcast "The Rundown" that changing the voting system is how we deliver better government - through a more representative, collaborative system.
People are rightly worried about Reform winning power on a small % of votes But as Emma Harrison from Make Votes Matter says: NO party should have 100% power on a fraction of the vote. It doesn't matter who they are Times have changed, & the voting system has to change with it
No, people do not often start talking about voting systems on the doorstep. But they DO say politics is a waste of time, all politicians are the same, whats the point in voting. If people are telling us Politics is not working - then we need to fix it!
