There are opportunities for state and the federal government to put an end to native forests logging and protect our forests, will they take it?
The import of logs from NSW and Tasmania into Victoria is another issue. This issue was covered the 4 Corners program in June.
Logging on private land is done under different legislation, and threatens biodiversity and destroying vital corridors. Local councils are often left with limited resources to manage these practices.
EJA’s recent Follow the Money report made recommendations for the Victorian government.
A lot of promises were made when logging was announced to end three years ago, but not everything has been fulfilled. What remains is logging under different names, and without scrutiny that logging has previously held to.

What can be done? If we focus on rapid attack and suppressions over broad scale burning we will likely see our forests more protected and have less bushfires.
Phil researched that a forest mentioned in a submission by the Victorian Government on planned burns still suffered from a bushfire.
Through Phil’s research he has found that burning forests will increase the trend of said forest more susceptible to bushfires as opposed to those left untouched.
Professor David Bowman found on a trip to the Huon Valley in Tasmania found that regrowth from logging burnt more severely than those in untouched forests.
Got to be seen to be doing something, Phil highlights that current fire management runs on this mantra. But there is no evidence that more fuel load increases the spread of bushfire.
Phil first tells a story of the of where he lives in the Illawarra, on Dharawal country, where First Nations people understood the land and how to maintain it with indigenous fire techniques. They used fire to help grow food and doing so by not disturbing the whole landscape.
