My newest character is Key in BYMMS. He was the last of the main cast to be created and hadn't originally been planned, but worked out well. He's about a year old now so I feel like he's pretty established. I've grown rather attached to him haha. Can't imagine BYMMS without him. #AwesomeCharacters

For my teaser I offer this snippet of chapter one of Between You, Me, and the Moonlit Sea. Feeling what, I wonder.

“You eat her memories?” the man asked.

“Of course I did.” Bell sipped her drink again and sighed. “I had to.”

“You could’ve just eaten her.”

“Key!” Bell hissed, glancing around the bar. No one was paying attention to them, of course. “You know I don’t do that.”

“Come on,” Key drawled. “It’s been what? Twenty years? Surely you’re feeling—“

“We’re not talking about this, Hyeon-ju.” Bell’s voice was firm. “I didn’t call you to talk about this.”

#LGBTQWriteAThon #30: I did achieve my goals for the month! I drew two pieces of Pride art and I made it past the 2/3rds mark of BYMMS edits/rewrites. I feel good about that! Here's hoping I can finish that final 1/3rd in July! (Or August if moving takes up too much time to make July feasible.)

Fun fact: water is brought up 25 times in the first 18 chapters of Between You, Me, and the Moonlit Sea. For today's #WIPSnips I chose this moment. It's our first real look at Min-seo, Bell's grandmother.

“It has to live up to my standards.” Bell and Bada turned in unison to the head of the room, where Min-seo was standing in the wide archway. She didn’t look happy to see either of them, but particularly Bell, who she’d let her gaze settle on. “A-yeong.”

“Grandmother,” Bell replied, doing their best to keep their tone even and their expression unreadable. They never liked to show their true feelings to their grandmother, it was a nasty habit of hers to try and weaponize them.

“So nice of you to visit us,” Min-seo continued, walking further into the kitchen to retrieve a glass and fill it with water from a pitcher in the refrigerator. Her tone made it clear that she did not, in fact, think it was so nice. “Do you need something?”

Bell resisted the urge to roll their eyes. Min-seo seemed to think that any time Bell appeared around the family home, it was to try and get something from them, be it money, food, what have you. The fact that they were holding a bowl of what had to be an expensive cut of beef didn’t help. “Eomma asked me to come over.” They took a moment to chew another bite before adding, “I like what you’ve done with the garden.” They were careful to use only jondaetmal with her, as they had done all their life. Min-seo didn’t tolerate friendliness.

#LGBTQWriteAThon #28: This is the first piece of magic we see in BYMMS, right at the start of chapter one. Bell steals the memories of their now-ex by way of a kiss and their fox bead.

“Bell... I think we owe it to ourselves to admit this isn’t working out, and let each other go,” Carrie said, her tone even and collected, as if she’d practiced this. “It’s for the best.”

The words stung every time, but still Bell smiled, because it was all they could do to keep the tears from welling in their eyes. “Maybe it is,” they murmured softly, their tone also carefully controlled. They couldn’t let it waver, couldn’t let the pain show. “But… before we do, one last kiss?”

Carrie shifted her weight from one foot to the other, frowning gently at the request. “I don’t know if that’s a good idea.”

“Please?” Bell asked, taking a small step closer and offering their hand. “It would bring me closure.” It wouldn’t, not truly, but at least it would remove Bell from Carrie’s life. It was as close to closure as she was ever able to get.

Carrie sighed, but nodded. “Okay. I guess.”

Bell lifted her own hand to her face, pretending to hide her expression as she slipped a glassy marble into her mouth. Their hand fell back to their side as they stepped forward to meet their soon-to-be ex-girlfriend halfway and bring their lips together. This close, her favorite perfume filled Bell’s senses, nearly drowning out the smell of salt and water with gardenias and a hint of vanilla.

Daring to part her lips with their tongue, they let the glass-like bead slip from their mouth to hers, then snapped their fingers behind Carrie’s back. As they leaned back, they looked into Carrie’s unfocused gaze and held up their hand, palm to the sky. Without needing to be asked, she reached into her mouth and pulled out the marble, setting it in their palm delicately. It was slick with her saliva, but they paid no mind to that. It never bothered them.

There were so many good moments in this week's writing, it was hard to choose just one. My biggest highlight was just how much fun I had with this week's edits/rewrites. I'm really loving the section of BYMMS I'm in and I'm so eager to work on it everyday. I missed that feeling. #FaveLineFriday

“I’m surprised you can play with just your hands,” Tae commented.

“Why?” Hyeon-ju asked.

“Well, people who play with their fingers usually have callouses,” Tae reasoned. “Your hands are soft.”

Hyeon-ju held up a hand to flash his colored nails. “I mostly use my nails,” he explained. “I paint them with gel so they’re sturdier.” In fact, he’d put on a fresh coat last night in preparation for this session, so they were a pristine black, no scratches or grown-out segments.

Tae reached out and took his hand, running his thumb over his nails before splaying his fingers out against Hyeon-ju’s so they were palm to palm. Hyeon-ju’s hand was just slightly larger, but they fit well all the same. The two of them stared at the space between them for a long moment before Tae finally broke the silence. “I need to tell you something, Key.”

#LGBTQWriteAThon #26: Once upon a time I probably had a dream cover artist, but I couldn't tell you who that would've been now. I CAN tell you I was lucky enough to get my dream cover for PTS thanks to the lovely @rayday.bsky.social, who painstakingly made this masterpiece for me.

Summary:
Suzuka Shibuya-Preece is a young maverick freshly accepted into the elite of the world’s premier defense organization, the Heavenly Forces. Created by mankind and their alien allies to prepare Earth for the eventual invasion of a hivemind bent on universal conquest, the goal of every soldier is to become the wielder of one of the vaunted Celestial Weapons. The catch? Each one is sentient, and it’s not enough to want them.

They have to choose you too.

“How is school going, A-yeong?”

They resisted the urge to breathe a sigh of relief. School was an easy subject, a safe one. “Great, going great,” they answered. “I made the Dean’s List last semester.”

Bada’s smile widened. “Oh, how lovely. You’ve always been clever.”

“Of course!” exclaimed Bo-in. “They’re a fox!”

The table laughed and Bell resisted the urge to roll their eyes, but a smile pulled at one side of their lips anyway. People often believed that gumiho were likened to foxes, but the truth was the opposite. Gumiho and their counterparts across the world created the reputations that foxes now carried far and wide.

#LGBTQWriteAThon #21: I can't think of a proper joke in all of BYMMS, but this particular moment always makes me grin or chuckle when I go over it again, so I feel like it counts. Key and his friend run into Tae a couple weeks after a rather interesting interaction between them.

Once he was gone, Sang dropped into a chair at the small table for two he’d dragged Hyeon-ju over to and rested his chin in his hand. “Sooo, what was that about?” he asked, looking smug.

Hyeon-ju wanted to walk into the ocean. He sighed deeply, shoulders sagging, then took the seat across from Sang. Pulling the band from his hair, he ran his fingers through it before beginning to retie it up into a small bun. “It’s nothing.”

“Oh yeah, that’s definitely how guys talk to me about nothing,” Sang commented, grinning wider.

Hyeon-ju glowered at him, which only fueled Sang’s smugness.
