A girl forgets her homework for the first time and gets detention even though she has the highest grade in her class.
Meanwhile, a boy in that class who also forgot their homework is given another chance, even though he sits playing computer games every lesson and is performing poorly in fortnightly tests.
A group of girls films a fun TikTok at their school ball and gets suspended for a week. The boys brazenly say every slur under the sun and get away with it.

The boys loudly discuss in class why abortion is wrong, declaring anyone who is pro-choice should be "slaughtered" without consequence. A girl disagrees with this, debates their position, and is called argumentative and disrespectful.

The massive coalition of local newspaper publishers filed a federal lawsuit today against OpenAl and Microsoft, alleging the technology companies systematically copied copyrighted reporting from nearly 400 local newspapers to train and develop commercial artificial intelligence products, including ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot, without permission or compensation.
The publishers, represented by Platkin LLP, a law firm founded earlier this year by former New Jersey Attorney General Matthew J. Platkin, contend that OpenAl and Microsoft unlawfully appropriated original news content to build their Al systems, violating the Copyright Act and threatening the future of local journalism.

The lawsuit also alleges that OpenAl knowingly stripped copyright management information from publishers' work - including author bylines, copyright notices, and terms of use information — in violation of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act.
The complaint cites remarks by OpenAl founder Sam Altman, who acknowledged during testimony before the British House of Lords that it would be "impossible to train today's leading Al models without using copyrighted materials."

The lawsuit comes as local news organizations continue to face mounting economic pressures.
The publishers argue that allowing technology companies to monetize original reporting without permission or payment will further weaken local journalism and the communities that depend on it.

Since the federal budget, social media has been full of memes casting government as a "silent partner" in small business: entrepreneurs take the risk, do the work, and Canberra-specifically Prime Minister Anthony Albanese in the memes - turns up with a hand out for 47%.
It is a good line. It is also misleading.
I am what people now call a
"founder". I run an economic consultancy company. I used to be a salaried employee paying the top marginal tax rate, but 20 years ago my business partner and I started our own company. We worked harder and earned more, but fundamentally did the same work we did before. Yet I paid much less tax.
Like many small-business people now complaining bitterly about the government's proposed tax changes, I have taken advantage of numerous tax breaks for founders. I had a family trust own my share of the company; distributed income to family members on low tax rates; paid out only what we needed to live on, avoiding the top marginal personal tax rate; retained the rest inside the company, accumulating value over time; and can live off retained earnings in my retirement or sell some or all of the company and potentially access the CT discount.
When founders say, "I worked hard, didn't pay myself a salary and poured the profits back into the business", spare me. Yes, we all did that, not because we were saints, but at least in part because it helped us reduce tax. Most of this is still allowed.
