This is my little bit of the Green Gathering festival in Chepstow. The Radical Family Space, in Campaigns, whose mission is to gently indoctrinate children with a full programme of proudly woke workshops and storytelling. 😎🩷🌱✊

I just went to a creative writing workshop with one of my favourite writers in the world, Kae Tempest. He was amazing at opening up an inclusive and non-judgemental space for a group of around 20, some of whom do this for a living, some are total beginners (like me). What a treat. Buy his book!

Helpful to the campaigners that the listing specifically mentions the function of the building as a library, too, I’d warrant.

“A central half turn staircase with semicircle landings between floors is aligned with the main entrance on the west side, floating on the first floor and within a curved brick envelope to the other levels. The elevator is also on this line at the rear northwest corner. Two other half turn staircases in curved brick envelopes at the northeast and southeast corners, adjacent to toilets.
Soundproof panels set on the wider spaces in the glazing grid so that the interior environment has narrow vertical windows allowing even natural light reaching deep into the plan over the course of the day while the sound of the city is muted. U-shaped ceiling panel grid is intended to dampen internal sound and shade the strip lighting running through it. Clear height from floor to the low end of these panels is reportedly 3.1 metres and the light fittings are in the inner recess half a metre deep.

When I was growing up I got my puberty & sex education mainly from books like The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole. And maybe also the Kay’s Catalogue. Today, excellent, LGBTQ+ affirming, books like this exist. It’s Totally Normal: An LGBTQIA+ Guide to Puberty & Gender. By Gupta & Mehta. Recommend.

A small group of transphobes are protesting on High St, Cardiff city centre. An impromptu gathering of trans folks an allies have formed an already bigger counter demo, supported by local businesses handing out rainbow drops and blasting Lady Gaga! Anyone in the area should join us!

Naturalise #bisexuality by continuing to post pics of nature in bi lighting!

I once read a pissy social media post implying that the proliferation of these kinds of photos was bad because they are desperate (if unconscious) attempts by desperate bi people to naturalise bisexuality.
I say, let’s make this a conscious effort.
Bisexuality is seen by so many people as fake or not a real thing, let’s continue to try and make it seem totally natural and normal which, of course, it bloody well is.

Private Eye is one of the best campaigning and investigative news outlets we have. It’s always a badge of shame when an institution is covered in that august organ. Senior management at Cardiff University, sadly, are frequently covered these days.

FIER making drastic cuts to jobs and courses last year, Cardiff University is considering removing an entire floor of a busy, useful library to install a trendy "immersive learning environment"
The university confirmed that the second floor of the Arts and Social Sciences Library was "a location currently being explored" for an, ahem, proof-of-concept learning space to try out the idea. It says it wants to draw on examples of immersive learning spaces at some of the best universities worldwide.
Previously used to describe the old-fashioned but effective concept of going to France to learn French, "immersive learning" is now all about being inside digital presentations, either using virtual reality headsets or rooms with big-screen walls.
Certainly the "immersive rooms" at nearby University of Wales Trinity St David (where
students can enjoy being surrounded by flm of
LED screens) and the Igloo Virtual Reality Cave at the University of the West of England feature heavily in their recruitment marketing. But campaigners at Carditt say polling consistently shows students want real physical books as well as digital wizardry.
There has been outcry from staff and students, who rather value the vital quiet study space and the 7,000 or so books housed on that floor, including old and rare collections of Welsh literature and music. To make matters worse, the space was only refurbished in 2024, with new carpets, desks and lighting, after academics had complained for years about the shabby state of the study space.
A petition to protect the library has attracted more than 10,000 signatures - and with some success! As the Eye went to press, the university announced that its original timeline to start work over the summer break had "become unachievable and we have taken the decision to pause initial preparatory work"’
