Sure, I suppose it is feminine-coded to not want a senate candidate who allegedly twisted an ex-girlfriend’s arm and shoved her into a bedroom and “held the door closed from the other side so she couldn’t get out, telling her to remain there until she was ‘calm.’” I guess it’s pretty girly to hear another ex describe him showing up at her house engaging in behavior she described as “reckless” and “unsettling” and imagining that there’s much more where that came from. Women sure are silly that way.

Platner’s implosion is the natural culmination of a campaign motivated by a warped sense of masculinity, one that told voters to give their trust to a candidate who had done nothing to earn it. It has revealed that, for some progressives, the important markers of a candidate who displays “positive masculinity” are primarily aesthetic, with little concern for whether or not the man in question actually lives the values he presents. Platner and his team had so thoroughly convinced journalists, commentators and voters that they had outsmarted the trappings of traditional masculinity, only to come crashing down as a result of it.

Our new research reveals that the objection to any work from home is more likely to be driven by something else entirely: ego.

Case by case, there may be good reasons for teams to work together in person. As a general rule, though, it turns out that ordering people back to the office full time is a power and status move. It’s a signature strategy of leaders who exhibit narcissistic qualities. They see any kind of remote work as a threat to their authority and admiration. They want to be worshiped at the office altar.

We might want to console ourselves that nothing could be as bad as the murderous vulgarity of Qatar, but at the centre of this year’s World Cup the increasingly nihilistic presence of Trump 2.0 threatens to turn everything to shit. For all the expansion of soccer in the US in recent years the game remains niche, sustained by the immigrant communities routinely denominated ‘garbage’ by the second-generation immigrant president and now threatened by ICE raids targeting undocumented fans at World Cup venues. When the US first hosted, in 1994, it had played in only two World Cups since 1945 and had had no domestic professional league for a decade. Many Americans were as unhappy as everyone else: USA Today assured its readers that it was legitimate not to give two hoots about the World Cup of the biggest sport in ‘Cameroon, Uruguay and Madagascar’, and the columnist Tom Weir wrote that ‘hating soccer is more American than mom’s apple pie.’ Writing in the New York Times, George Vecsey nailed it: ‘The United States was chosen because of all the money to be made here, not because of any soccer prowess. Our country has been rented out as a giant stadium and hotel and television studio.’

The stakes are so high that the spectacle is compelling even if much of the actual football is not. We will bear witness to sporting immortality but also sporting infamy: the fluffed shots, missed penalties and red cards that in a nanosecond condemn men of inestimable talent, accomplishment and wealth to the status of eternal losers.

Speaking of investors, there is an irritating detail I noticed in the S-1. Assume the timeline in the S-1 is correct — we have no reason to assume this, by the way; SpaceX’s delays are legendary — and let’s do some math. The V3 satellites Musk is talking about weigh 2,000kg, according to an FCC filing. Sixty of them add up to 120,000kg, or 120 metric tons. If Starship works as advertised, delivering 100 metric tons, that is still not enough for all 60 V3 satellites.

“It’s Musk math,” says Chris Quilty, the cofounder and co-CEO of Quilty Space, an analytics firm. He notes that the V3 satellites may not weigh exactly 2,000kg, and that if SpaceX stacks them so there’s no wasted volume, 60 satellites may be possible. Sure, maybe. Hard to know without details in the filing, though. If everything hinges on this ship, I expect more fucking details on the ship, you know?
