An old piece on reflections and inner turmoil.

Water. Deep and pure began to pour down into the cistern, giving the temple its usual damp, cool feeling. Justin was well acquainted with it, how it made his robes soggy and heavy, burdensome upon his body, though he said little about it.

As it was, he felt nervous as he stood upon the bridge over the waters itself. A few pilgrims who had come in order to witness the idol of Adona the Consecrated. She stood there in the midst of the central pillar, a lone figure upon an island of marble, the statue formed of pure marble. The bridge formed a circle a fair distance away where one could bear witness to her, standing resolute, her hand clinging to a single pendant. It was the one part of the spectacle that was not composed of salt, though legend said it was the one thing in her possession.

It had been said that she was once a saint known for exorcism and the sealing of demons, and that for one in particular she had held it within herself until it could be transferred to the pendant. Some said she prayed her body would be made inhospitable to it, others said she had succeeded in the sealing but it had drained her life and turned her into a statue as a consequence, albeit one of purified earth.

In any case, the statue was indeed real. Whether it was once a woman of great faith or if the stories were true was unknown. What Justin did know, though, was that his brother was in a similar spot. Walking to the circle outside the statue, he looked at the effigy of a believer, the hand out, holding the silver chain and single pendant. It was well out of reach of others, almost precariously over the holy water. If there was a demon inside, the water would no doubt dissipate it.

Every day, people would come to this place, echoing with droplets of water and subtle waves, feeling inspired as they soaked in the experience, but for the twelve years he had lived in this place, Justin felt little other than uncertainty.

As he looked at his reflection in the water, a voice called.

"…

"It's as good as any other, it just doesn't soak easily," Basq said before looking to Justin. "You could get yours if you take the Oath. Hasn't your brother done the same?"

"He did, I'm not sure it'd fit as well on me," Justin half-lied. "Besides, seems they're choosy about how quickly they give them out."

"It just took them a bit longer to treat mine."

"Well, you are pretty tall, probably had to find a tent to convert first," Justin said.

"Ah, witty as ever. Somehow you're tongue tied when it comes to recitations but not for your jokes," Basq said.

Justin sighed, already remembering how the father had complained to him. "I told you, that's more Maurice's specialty."

"It's the one way to tell you two apart," Basq said jokingly. "One's smart, the other's smartmouthed."

"Guess so," Justin said, not denying Basq's claim, however, as soon as he thought about Maurice he felt a pit grow in his stomach.

For a time, silence hung in the air before Basq spoke.

"Maurice is doing better than hoped. It's only when he sleeps that there's a problem...but he'll be well."

"I hope so," Justin said.

Basq gently placed a hand on Justin's shoulder. "He's strong. It's one of the things you two have in common."

"And he insists on having me there?"

"Yes. The father already agreed. Afterwards we will free him or he'll be purified," Basq said as they came to vaulted doors.

The words made Justin gulp as he watched Basq open the doors, only to stop short of a line. Further ahead was yet another door.

"He's within. Go with peace and resolve," said Basq.

"Thanks. See you when I get back," said Justin before he strode ahead, beyond the line and straight on. Walking with a heavy resolve.

The sound of water had left, and instead there was only the thumping of his heart as he walked along the hall. He walked ahead to the other door, pressing against it before he entered the room. It was a strange place, black as pitch save for the lights from the ceiling two spots illuminated alone in the dark. One of them had his twin, Maurice there, sitting.

"Maurice!" called out Justin, walking ahead, only to see the salt circle around the light, the seal isolating Maurice who only breathed. Slowly, rhythmically, as if it too was a rite of some kind. "Maurice?"

There was no response. It was as if he was sitting asleep. There was something within Justin that told him to go ahead to the other spotlight. Walking within the light, he looked at his twin, speaking again. "Mauri?"

A response came in the form of a rumbling from within Maurice's stomach, a sound like bones popping before his head was raised and his eyes opened. There was something in them that felt ominous, in a way Justin hadn't seen before.

"Finally, I get to meet the younger brother. Maurice told me a lot about you," a voice said from within Maurice, though it sounded rougher, slightly amused. "Think this is the first time I've held a twin before."

Justin felt a chill over his body, his skin prickling. "Who are you?"

"Your brother's guest," the demon said. "He's a bit stiff, but in decent shape for a host. Your friends need to work on their people skills, though."

"Get out of him!" Justin shouted, stepping forward, though he had to be mindful of the salt circle, lest he let it out.

"Would that I could, but he and I have a deal," it said, revealing Maurice's hand to Justin.

Justin looked in confusion before he saw a golden nail embedded through Maurice's palm, the head of it bearing a sigil that resembled the locket from before. A red circle was there, but it did…

"Because, he said you're my ticket to freedom...Provided you and him can have a little convo."

"He wouldn't offer up my body for his," Justin said, unamused.

"You sound so sure. Here I was hoping for some drama. You humans are so entertaining when you squirm...Maybe I can tell you a little something about your brother that'll make that happen."

"Try me," Justin said, now becoming more annoyed than scared.

"He's hoping you'll do the right thing before he dies today. Honestly, I am too...Mostly," the demon remarked. "After all, he's spent most of his life picking up your slack. As ungrateful as you were to those who saved you two poor orphans."

Justin grit his teeth. "You like the sound of your own voice."

"His voice, technically," the demon said with relish. "Want to hear what else this dummy has to say? Before he wakes up, at least...I got the keys to the diary while I'm here."

Justin glowered. "Go to hell."

"Sadly, you might be taking me there, but we'll get to that later," the demon said with a laugh. "Your keeper needs to have a word with you first."

Now with rage, Justin looked on, his doubt and anxiety growing as he wondered what the demon's game was, and if Mauri had answers worth hearing.

A Batgirl piece this visual inspired. Psu's work has a way of getting my mind going.

The cold creep of snowfall in summer was always a dire omen in Gotham, because it meant Freeze was had a new scheme.

A number of cars nearby had been frozen in their tracks, and buildings were engulfed in snow and ice. It was cold and getting colder, which meant the people were in danger.

"Why's Freeze doing this?" Batgirl asked as she walked through the frozen wasteland. A single set of boot prints left with every step, soon swept away by her cape.

The answer was, as always, for his wife, at least in Freeze's mind. However, Cassandra Cain knew that it was often more complicated than that.

"Rumor has it some of the Falcone mob hired him to help with capturing some of their rivals. More than a few of them were joking about putting their rivals on ice permanently," Oracle said over the communicator. "From the intel we picked up, they didn't pay him all they agreed on, so this must be part of his revenge. A lot of Falcone's extended family had gathered in this part of Gotham. My guess is the money's for more research on Nora's condition."

Cassandra nodded. It wasn't much of a leap to figure the cold scientist would either hold them until he got his full payment or exact vengeance his own way. If there was one thing other than love he was known for, it was his vindictive side. It was so great that he had employed a localized weather machine just to keep any of their men from escaping either.

"How's the Extreme Cold suit holding up?" Oracle asked.

"Well." The question was somewhat rhetorical as Batgirl went on, a dot of white in an alabaster scape. It was adapted to keep the wearer warm in subzero environments and combat Mr. Freeze's usual methods and tactics. At the moment she felt as if she was a bit warm, but she could see a few people stuck inside buildings past the ice and frost. Some had their hands to the glass, trying to look outside.

"Good. You should be close to the building they're all at," Oracle said.

Batgirl was going to reply, but then she saw s…

Through the technology and lenses in the cowl, Oracle could see the sight. Already, she was pulling up data on what buildings nearby that might be able to help. "There's a store nearby that still has steady power. It's just frozen over. You should be able to handle that."

Carefully, Batgirl began to detach her cape, the cloth slipping from her shoulders and smart technology letting it come undone. The electromagnetic pulse that came from her suit's fingertips activated its internal heating function. It was different from the same pulse that made the cape go rigid for its glide mode, specific to the pure white suit as the inner portion of the cape glowed a faint orange.

The bright light caught the eye of the girl who gasped. Shivering, and through half-open eyes, she looked up at the shadow in white. "B...batgirl?"

There was a small nod from Batgirl before she spread her cape, wrapping it around them both before speaking. "We need to move. Take a moment to get ready."

The mother perked up just a moment, sigh and trail of visible vapor escaping her as she nodded.

Once Batgirl was sure they both had warmed enough, she guided them to the building Barbara had marked, the entrance frozen over as she looked at it. A foot of ice covered the glass doors. She turned to see the mother and child were still close, but there was worry clear on their face. All it took was a moment for her to dissuade that worry. "It'll be okay."

Placing her hands to the ice wall, she felt heat, her suit's palms turning orange as the ice rapidly melted.

There was a hiss of steam, the release of heat as the ice wall fell, leaving the entrance open. With a light pull, she pried apart the glass doors just a bit, not enough to release the heat inside, but enough to let the pair inside.

A handful of Gothamites watched on in awe as one of the city's protectors came in with two more civilians. Once all three were in, she closed the door and saw that a few heaters had been taken out to help allevia…

Was watching Ruby Seals' Haruspex route video essay and was listening to her talk about hermeneutics as well as theater history. She shared this quote from Stanislavski and it reminded me of how much meaning and importance in any work comes from the person who makes it.

Never lose yourself on the stage. Always act in your own person, as an artist. The moment you lose yourself on the stage marks the departure from truly living your part and the beginning of exaggerated false acting. Therefore, no matter how much you act, how many parts you take, you should never allow yourself any exception to the rule of using your own feelings. To break that rule is the equivalent of killing the person you are portraying, because you deprive him of a palpitating, living, human soul, which is the real source of life for a part.

One more Tifa piece from the archives. Featuring Cloud this time! Guess a lot has me reflecting on FF7 stuff.

The flow of Mako around Mideel had been a major concern. The lifestream itself, once having gone wild had finally calmed, taming itself. Whether it was the mercy of the Planet or the kindness of a friend who loved it, the area was finally habitable again and able to be rebuilt.

Reeve's organization that had risen from the ashes of Shinra had started with those efforts. It was the first stop for both Cloud and Tifa after their work in Corel.

"Looks like it's coming along," Cloud remarked, seeing a few of the new buildings go up. He still had vague memories of his stay when he had lost himself.

"It is. I think it'll be back where the people can rest easier before long," Tifa said as she walked with him. They watched as goods were given out, the white chocobo local to the place being fed greens by some of the visitors. As they walked along, Tifa saw Cloud join in, smiling as he knelt down to also give it food. She felt more at ease, seeing him smile and pet the large bird while it ate. "Hehe..."

"Something funny?" Cloud asked her warmly as he continued to tend to the chocobo.

"No, more like adorable. Sometimes I forget how much you dote on chocobos."

"What can I say? They're good creatures," Cloud remarked before letting the one he had tended to go on its way. He looked around to survey the area before relaxing. "Well, no monsters in town. At least this means we should check the outskirts."

"Lead the way," Tifa said as they went on, heading closer to the wilderness, and the lifestream near it.

The both of them could feel the humidity as they went ahead. There were already natural hot springs in the area, but things seemed even more warm. For Cloud, there was an all too familiar taste in the air. Tifa knew it faintly from time living in Midgar and around the Nibelheim reactor, but it was unmistakable as little green wisps flowed in the air.

"There's a lot ambient Mako," Cloud remarked.

"Should we be worried?" Tifa asked, watching the occasional dot flitter ab…

"No. I don't think so. The doctor's checked people and Reeve and his people confirmed. There's not enough that it would give someone Mako poisoning," Cloud explained, putting his hand out. One of the flowing dots landed on his palm, only to disperse on contact, a faint tingle on Cloud's skin. "It's not as concentrated as when Shinra was abusing the stuff."

"Well, it all stems from the planet, so that tracks," Tifa said before she went closer to Cloud, looking into his blue eyes. "What about you?"

Cloud considered playing aloof but he couldn't. Instead, he relaxed himself, breathing deep. "I'm good, Tifa. Always better with you here." He turned to face her, trying to find the words that would work for feelings he held. "I never told you thank you for helping me."

"Really? I think you thanked me plenty," she said, giving him a teasing look.

A chuckle escaped Cloud's lips. "A proper thank you. Helping me find myself and sticking with me."

"After all we went through the last thing I wanted was to lose you," Tifa said, reaching out and touching his hand where the bit of lifestream had touched. Tifa's body went warm, a soft comfort coming from Cloud, especially as he grasped her hand.

"Well, one more reason to be grateful I'm here. We can enjoy the time we have...Just a lot of rebuilding to do," Cloud told her.

"Heh, nothing new for us, right?" she asked, moving closer.

Cloud recognized that look in her eye, the inviting brightness, the earnest expression. His own heart started to thud and thump as he felt gravity. It was a pull. His eyes began to close as they stood in the midst of nature. Their lips were inches from touching when-

KRAK! KRAK!

Both of them moved aside, Cloud's Buster Sword in hand while Tifa's fists were raised.

"A monster?" Cloud commented.

"A big one." Tifa looked on, seeing a winged dragon approach. A glowing materia gem on its forehead. "A summon? This might be tough."

Cloud nodded. "Yeah, but it's like you said. Nothing new for us."

Mired in Strife (Original Story)

The bog was heavy with tension, the thick air less than pleasant to breathe even as Lehma Rian waded through the muck.

She was adrift as she normally was, the curse to wander leading her far from the place she had called home. To seek but never find, to sleep but never be at rest. A decade of such had made her weary of the world, but she kept on, even as the wooden boards beneath her boots creaked and the mud sloshed.

It was at least a miracle she had arrived at the edge of the bog. Worn though the wooden walkway was, there was a trod path on the other side, and a town further out. Sleep and some measure of nourishment waited on the other side. All she had to do was walk a ways more.

In her dull gray eyes, she saw the wisches that floated and filtered nearby. Fires of the swamp that began to rise and float around. For a moment, Lehma recalled tales of them from when she was young. Her nan's old, bound book of wonders. It was said then that wisches were spirits of the departed, visiting to offer comfort to those in pain.

"If you see enough of them and treat them kindly, a wisches may grant you a boon."

Lehma, for a moment, stopped her steps, standing there. Though the air was stagnant, she let the scene wash over her, a cool wind blowing the reeds and tall grass, though the lights remained as if stars fallen from the heavens. She thought of her younger brother who often watched for passing stars in the heavens after nan's stories. How bright his eyes were. She thought of the fresh baked bread their mother would make for them in the morning. The cakes she would gift them with if they did well off on hunting with father. The old man's calloused hands and patient diligence, how he was so focused on practice and rigor.

"I wish I was home," whispered Lehma said as she closed her eyes, hoping beyond hope to be there when she opened them. However, instead the muddy vista remained. The only difference was the wisches had disappeared.

Sighing, she strode ahead.

Step …

The giant, burrowing hogs were a local curiosity, mammoth in their size, shaggy and known to hold their breath for long periods. As the primary predator of the swamp, there even Lehma had heard stories in passing of them catching wary travelers. It was only seeing its massive snout and huge tusks, ready to gore the unaware, that clued her in.

Her weapon drawn, her blood rushing, she readied herself. She watched it turn, splintered boards in its wake as it ate them and a mouthful of damp mud like nothing, but it sniffed the air, practically inhaling it before it turned in her direction, wading through the mud.

For something that big, she'd need an edge. She needed her slick knife, but it would have to be when she knew she could make a clean blow. Otherwise, the bladed weapon she had to use was all she had. Ruefully, she thought about if she should have asked the wisches for something else, but instead all she could do was all she had done these past years: try to survive.

With another squeal, the creature leapt at her, rushing swiftly, but Lehma cared little. Instead she ran forward too before she took a leap, jumping high and landing on one of the beast's tusks.

As sure as it was strong, Lehma's hand grasped the bony tusk, her fingers firm as she got her footing, even as the boar rushed wildly and she held her weapon. The creature was raging, rampaging, wild in its moves as it was savage in its flailing.

Lehma could only glower as it shook its head, her faint eyes sharp as she was getting tossed to and fro. She tried cutting the creature, but between the layer of muck, its thick hide, and all the motion, all she managed was a glancing cut before she was knocked skyward, careening through the air. It was by sheer luck that she managed to land on her feet, though she was sinking into the bog, slowly falling into the pit of mud.

Instantly, the woman cursed. The ground may as well have been quicksand there, deep and slowly consuming her. Had she fallen on her back…

It took all her strength to stay free as she heard it roar and squeal, rushing, but she held fast, stubborn and even spiteful in her way. She watched as it slowed down, feeling its struggling slow as the beast gave in to the poison.

Lehma's own breathing calmed as the bogboar's slowed to a crawl, until it ran ashore on the other side of the bog, where she had been going. She sat down on the shore, caked in mud while she gathered herself.

The eyes of the bogboar had closed for the final time as she pulled her knife out and sheathed it. For a moment, she had pity for the creature, placing her hand upon its snout, only to see the wisches from before return. All of them soon descending upon the bogboar, covering it in light before it, slowly faded, becoming as light as well.

Pulling her hand away, Lehma watched as the many lights left, joined by new ones, sparkling for a time. She sat there, letting tiredness leave her as she was watching them, wishing for nothing save for rest before she continued on.

An unfinished piece from earlier.

Fate is a curious thing. Something that connects to another. The ties that bind and weigh down the soul.

For Belle, she could feel its strain as she touched down in the Pallas. The place itself, divine and outside of time, radiated from the spirit of her classmate. As she opened her eyes, deep and green, she saw the walls, vivid and vibrant. Their many colors fluctuating, showing visions of memories past and ebbed by time.

"Looks like this one's not as big as the last. Means it's a cake walk, huh?" asked her guardian.

Belle said nothing as Pythia slithered over her shoulder, the thin, serpentine being circling her arm. Belle could see the golden ribbon around the snake shimmer as she became visible, her eyes looking about, unblinking, observing.

"And you're sure Terra's going to be a problem?"

"You saw for yourself," Pythia snickered, looking her counterpart in the eye. "If we don't stop her soon, well, she'll emerge. We can't have that, now, can we?"

Belle let out a small grunt, not wanting to agree, but she had seen the vision. People so far as the eye could see turning to stone, starting to ebb away and turn to dust. It was a world of stillness, a vision of a future their fates were tied to. "We better find her then and unbind her."

"You've read my mind precisely." Pythia said praisingly before she gestured to her ribbon with her tail. "Now, perhaps we can find our way beyond the labyrinth?"

Belle gave a nod, her delicate fingers gooing to the ribbon and finding a single loose thread. She pulled, watching it come undone, the string glistening and shining before it became a single, long fabric, one that came alive of its accord and began to float and flow forward. Through the maze of memories it zoomed, creating the path.

"Good, now we won't get lost on the little moments. Shall we?"

Belle said nothing, walking ahead, though once she was between the walls, she heard whispers, a hushed chorus and flashes of what was, all a prelude to an uncertain doom.

Belle's fist clenched at the recollection, her own one utterly ignored, but when she looked at Terra, she saw the dissatisfaction in the young woman's eyes.

"She's such an ingrate, isn't she?" Pythia asked as they followed the golden thread. "All that care and it's not enough for her."

"...She clearly worked hard to get there," Belle muttered, looking at the murals on the wall.

"And yet here she is, throwing herself a pity party," Pythia remarked while they passed a vision of a very Terra alone late at night with nothing but crafting dough. Her mother tiredly entering the apartment and ignoring the sculpture she made.

The memories upon the cracked walls continued to flitter to a room full of awards for art shows, a sea of silvers and a garden of golds there, the occasional bronze peppered in. Among them were the few smiles on her mother's face.

Belle considered Pythia's words. She tried to think it over, even if she felt differently. "I'm sure it's not that-" she began, when she saw water on the floor, the smell of salt filling the air. There was the sound of gulls cawing that was almost like laughter.

Wading further in, Belle saw a giant sandcastle, damp, but firm, monumental to them.

Belle and Pythia walked further along, the sound of splashing heard until they came to the dune where the sandcastle was. The golden thread ended at its entrance. Once they walked inside, the cavernous structure echoed. The sandcastle little more than a museum of rubble and rocks, the odd statue around. The one recurring element of Terra's home was earth.

The place was a monument to each statue, from the humble, crude versions to many more, all of them with their own red strings leading from them to a woven cocoon in the center. The red threads contrasting the gold that wrapped itself around Pythia's neck anew.

Weird. I was subscribed to a blocklist a friend got put on and when I went to see what was up...I was apparently blocked too? All I know is that it was called "The List," but I can't really be bothered to see what's going on there.
