A smart use of the emergency alerts system by the government, warning people across England and Wales of the serious wildfire risk.
Pride is a celebration of equality and freedom. Hate will never stop the fight for equality. Solidarity with Berlin. 🇩🇪🇬🇧🏳️🌈
Enjoyed hearing Andy Burnham speak at the Manchester Green Summit during his time as Mayor about: 🌍 Accelerating the transition to carbon net zero 🌳 Maintaining commitments to nature and environmental targets 👷 Developing green jobs and skills
Another great example, Mayfield Park in Manchester. Just five minutes from Piccadilly Station, it's a fantastic green space that's buzzing with people and wildlife. The key wasn't to treat green space as an afterthought to development, but to put it front and centre of modern urban planning.
Case in point, St Peter's Square in Manchester. The redevelopment included planting large trees. 🌳 During the heatwave the number of people using the shade says everything. Better urban cooling, cleaner air and a more comfortable public space. This is what good urban planning looks like.
Then there's MoD Salisbury Plain in Wiltshire. Around 94,000 acres and home to the largest remaining expanse of semi-natural, unimproved chalk grassland in north-west Europe. It's another example of how some of the country's most important habitats exist on public land. 📸 MoD
Similarly, places like Ennerdale in Cumbria, which forms part of England's national forest. Forestry England are shifting this large upland area from commercial logging to wildland management and natural woodland regeneration. 📸 Wild Ennerdale
Some of the most interesting areas included in the plan are on Ministry of Defence land. Warcop in Cumbria is a good example, one of the UK's largest army training areas. Here peatlands are being rewetted alongside its continued use for military purposes. 📸 North Pennines National Landscape
The plan covers 546,700 hectares of land, including areas of peatlands, grasslands, woodlands, rivers and infrastructure like highways: www.gov.uk/government/p...
Good move by @marycreagh.bsky.social with the new Government Estate for Nature. Instead of treating public land as disconnected pieces, it finally looks at the whole gov. estate as one big opportunity for nature restoration and climate mitigation. assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/media/6a3ce5...
Minister for Nature @marycreagh.bsky.social will publish plans tomorrow to move "from fragmented, site-by-site efforts to a more coordinated, whole estate approach" to restoring public land for nature and climate. This sounds very promising and, frankly, long overdue.
Greatly saddened by the death of David Hockney, a legendary figure in modern art, fellow lover of the natural world and an inspiration to so many, including myself. 📸 The Arrival of Spring @ Salt's Mill
A wholesome weekend woodland walk at @nationaltrust.org.uk Alderley Edge. 🍂🥾
It’s a real sight to see the toad migration in Edinburg’s Holyrood Park, where the road is closed and volunteers carry the amphibians across. But sadly the UK has lost 75% of our wetlands in the past 300 years, so lack of habitat is also a major issue in toad declines. Build, baby, build…a pond.
"What you do makes a difference, and you have to decide what kind of a difference you want to make." — Farewell, Dr Jane Goodall. Your life’s work has been a profound source of inspiration and an enduring call to action for our natural world.
Drinking Turkish coffee, reading Jake Fiennes and lounging in the 28°C sun. ☕️ 📖 ☀️ A hat trick, by all accounts.
Nice weekend ride out in the Yorkshire Dales National Park. 🚲 Took on some serious climbs, but worth it for the stunning views.
Hello BlueSky! Excited to be here to meet people, new and old. I'm a magpie-like collector of passions, most connected by the common threads of nature and the environment. Nature and climate advocacy; environmental law and policy; rewilding and nature restoration; wildlife; adventuring.
