As Pride closes & we’re slammed with an awful SCOTUS ruling on trans kids in sports, I recommend Let Us Play by Harrison Browne & Rachel Browne. It truly makes the case that Trans Rights are Human Rights and Human Rights are Trans Rights & goes into how trans issues are economic & intersectional.

I revisited a book that continues to have relevance, Zero Fail by @carolleonnig.bsky.social, for a psych profile on assassins: “Delusional, mentally ill people are most likely to kill. Psychologists who study assassins for the Secret Service say they believe they are fulfilling their destiny.”cont…

The Exceptional Case Study Project, a massive psychological study commissioned by the Secret Service, examined paths of 83 who had attacked or come close to attacking a prominent American figure. The study found that most assassins are seeking notoriety & care little about the politics of the person they're trying to kill. Often educated but isolated. They had made some disturbing reference to their plan to a neighbor, friend or coworker. They stalk first but may switch their target when they face obstacles.

CNN replaced a show hosted by a Black man with three decades of journalism experience with a show featuring white people whose biggest achievements are furrowing their brow, being on "Shark Tank" or telling obese people to exercise. The demonstrably less-informed white people are pitted as the intellectual equals of Ivy League-educated Black women (Reid, Phillip or Setmayer-pick one) or Black people who studied and practiced journalism (Cross, Reid, Phillip or Setmayer). And since CNN is considered
"mainstream," the less-educated, less-experienced, less-informed white people get to argue civil rights against an actual civil rights lawyer (Sellers) whose father is a certified civil rights hero. It's the only place in the known universe where a white man's opinion on women and Black voters holds as much weight as a journalist who literally wrote a book about Black voters (Cross). It's where a woman who studied public journalism and policy after growing up in a family of police officers (Setmayer) has to listen to a lecture about policing from a man whose only oath is to protect and serve the badge of whiteness.

An important op-ed…

Birtherism, the conspiracy theory born out of Donald Trump’s baseless questions about Barack Obama’s U.S. citizenship, was a mere curtain raiser for today’s campaign of racialized delegitimization aimed both at nonwhite elected officials and journalists as well as nonwhite immigrants, regardless of status, along with U.S. citizens and U.S. military service members. This was not a hidden campaign, but one formalized into policy and execution within Project 2025, spearheaded by the Heritage Foundation, ahead of Mr. Trump’s second election victory.

Disease "weather" report
The summer Covid-19 wave has arrived, though so far, it's been relatively wimpy. Wastewater signals, emergency department visits, and test positivity rates are all gradually increasing, but not yet reaching the levels we saw at this time last year. Hawaii and Florida are notable exceptions, with more significant activity. Hospitalizations and deaths remain low due to broad population immunity, though-as always-severe outcomes tend to lag behind other indicators. Currently, Covid-19 is causing about 100 deaths per week in the U.S.

Norovirus rates-think vomiting, diarrhea, and rapid spread-continue to linger after an unusually intense year thanks to a new variant. Currently, levels are still elevated compared to previous years, but are trending downward.

What to do: Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water-sanitizer doesn't kill norovirus. Be extra cautious if it's going around your kid's summer camp or your friend group.
A recent norovirus outbreak in Utah was linked to frozen oysters, serving as a reminder that norovirus can spread rapidly through
contaminated food and surfaces. (Note: The same oysters were sold in Arizona, California, Colorado, and Montana. If you're here, pass on the frozen oysters for now.)
