"You,” Zephira says in cold rage, drawing Andi’s gaze to the location of her voice.
The altrustian is all of three trees away, bracing herself against the trunk as she catches her breath. She looks awful, her formerly pristine and well-healed form now rapidly bruising and littered with scraps and cuts of various depths. With effort she begins stumbling towards her enemy, hatred and offense in her eyes.
“You worthless little insect!”
Andi props herself on an elbow, lacking the strength to take her feet, lacking the strength to fight back at all.
As the distance is closed Andi receives an awkward kick across her face, softened by both the damage-wrought weakness in Zephira and the awkward angle of the now only-slight incline of the foothill they’re on. Stunted as the kick is, it’s still hard enough to send the downed terran’s head spinning and her body to match, flopping around onto her back.
Zephira steps over her and lowers, pinning her down with a weight-supporting knee and reaching forward to wrap both hands around Andi’s throat.
“I should have done this from the beginning,” Zephira snarls, blood-coated teeth bared like an animal going for the kill, “I am imperial royalty, you despicable creature. I should have never even humored you.”

The hands around Andi’s throat tighten—and even through the lessening nature of her attacker’s wounds, the strength is still a touch beyond where her own would be at full capability. Her own hands come up, one to wrap against a wrist and the other to press against a collarbone, though neither will do her any good, neither will delay the inevitable.
Zephira is seeing red. Or, maybe blue, I don’t know if blood color matters for that. A dizzying rush of thoughts flows through her mind, twisting her emotions like a vortex to a gentle bay. Watching Andi gasp for breath, watching her face change color and her mouth gape for air, watching the tremble of her limbs. The mess of her previously neat and orderly hair, the fear and anger in her eyes so vibrant with duty, the tone of the muscles from countless hard-fought battles yet aren’t doing anything for her now.
Lowering herself down, she tells herself it’s to get a closer view of the light leaving those beautiful green eyes. This lie holds for exactly five seconds, and the descending movement doesn’t halt where it should.
Before Zephira can even register what she’s doing, their lips touch. Before Zephira’s rage can regrip the spotlight, her tongue pushes past the terran’s lips. Before she can remind herself she means to kill Andi, their chests are together, and her hands are loosening around the throat to trace up, to cup her by the jaw and cheeks.
And Andi, through shock or weakness or any combination of factors, doesn’t fight it. Her own resistance falls away, her eyes close. One hand tenders its grip on Zephira’s wrist, the other wraps around the altrusian’s shoulders.

"The same hand that rested beneath the terran's chin moves around the back of her head, snaking into those short reddish locks. Zephira's grip suddenly turns harsh, yanking Andi's head back bully so their eyes could meet. Her voice dips to a cold, authoritarian whisper.
“Take heart, terran, your life in my chains will be the envy of your whole mongrel species.”
Andi grits her teeth and reaches up to grip Zephira by the wrist, wrenching her hand away—which Zephira is happy to let happen.
“If they come for us, I’ll die on my feet before letting them take me,” she growls, the fire reigniting inside her belly.
“Good,” Zephira replies, the sharpness of her smiling hiding that this new fire is exactly what she was hoping to spark, “get to your feet now, then. We have a hike ahead of us.”"

"Andi doesn’t reply right away, turning her head to look at the altrusian. At first she meets those icy blue eyes, then travels her gaze lower until they land on her feet.
“It’s pretty rocky up there. Are you sure you don’t want to wait for your boots to dry?”
“Clever, Andi,” Zephira replies with a sardonic smirk, “but you know as well as I do that my skin can tolerate such conditions.”
She walks up along the bank and comes to stand directly in front of the terran, hands on sharp hips as she looks down at her.
Andi, however, either can’t or simply doesn’t choose to look up, her eyes hovering down around Zephira’s knees.
Until, of course, a single damp finger lands gently under her chin, applying just enough pressure to tilt her head up. Not all the way, mind, but enough to make it to about her bust.
“Besides,” Zephira says, her register low and honeyed, “if I get a cut you can simply kiss it better.”
Andi lets her eyes linger on the slim-toned torso in front of her. The pale blue skin, the delicate curves between waist and chest, the flawless complexion unmarred from scars or blemishes or even dirt now that it’s been washed. She watches the path of a single water droplet traveling lower and lower until it disappears into a neat patch of white hair a few inches below the navel."

"Turning back towards the shelter, Andi pauses as she sees a strange machine on top of the log. A metal box propped up on a tri-pod, a small and broad-curved dish pointed skywards.
Zephira follows her gaze.
“Oh, that,” she says casually, “I went back to the ship to get medicine for you. I also found a charged battery and a portable distress beacon.”
“Ah,” Andi mumbles, ignoring the pit in her stomach. What a bad couple days for her gut.
“You’re holding something back, Andi,” Zephira points out, stepping a little closer to the terran, “that isn’t like you.”
“I don’t think I have to say it, do I?”
“Say it anyway.”
Andi sucks in a deep breath, tension creeping into her shoulders.
“That’s not tuned for alliance sensors, is it?”
“No. It isn’t.”
“So if help comes, it’ll be altrusian.”
“Yes. It will be.”"

mrs president, the first "good girl" has hit the twin mortal enemies

"“Can you hold this here?” she asks, watching as Andi attempts to comply.
It takes a significant amount of effort, but the terran manages to make it work. With her body heavily tilted against the bark, she props her elbow against it, holding some of the weight of her arm.
“Good girl,” Zephira lets slip before promptly shutting off that train of thought. Her cheeks flush and she thanks the gods that Andi isn’t lucid enough to truly comprehend.
She reaches for a bottle of water and twists it open, bringing her hand up and cupping it to pour a bit into.
“Open,” she instructs, trying her best to harden herself once more as she brings the cupped hand to Andi’s mouth. She tilts it ever so slightly, letting the water flow from her palm and past the terran’s lips.
Repeating this about half a dozen times, Zephira finds herself satisfied with how she’s handling this and sits back, taking a drink from the bottle.
“You’re going to have so much to thank me for when this is over,” she mutters quietly, “if you even survive.”
Andi, naturally, doesn’t respond. It seems to be taking all of her energy just to stay upright enough to keep the icepack on her head.
Zephira scoffs mirthlessly. It’s no fun to taunt a downed enemy. She folds her arms over her chest and turns to look out the cracked-open end of the log shelter, watching the fat drops of rain shower down over the cloud-darkened jungle. When this lets up she can journey back to the ship—if they’re lucky the locals won’t be there and she’ll be able to slip inside to rummage for a steroid in the medbay or something."

I really enjoyed this book! each novella was different and distinct but the author's voice remained consistent throughout. I enjoyed the playful interjections and loved how queer everything was! I really connected to the characters and found myself immersed in each world.

gunsmoke was probably my favorite, (minor spoilers?) I love some toxic doomed yuri, but bean's dip was quite the page turner. excited to see what else vai puts out in the future!"

"“Is that all it takes?” she asks, her voice low and mildly hostile.
“It is now. I found a flint outcropping today, chipped some off with a rock. All we’ll need is this and my knife, however long that lasts.”
“Well. Don’t you just know everything?” Zephira mutters under her breath, “we should be on Altrus right now. You should be licking my boots and begging for scraps from my plate.”
Her voice is starting to build, deep seated anger coming to the forefront alongside indignity and humiliation at her comparative ineptitude towards surviving this hellish world. Before Andi can get a word in, she continues.
“But you had to kick us into slipspace. Had to detonate your shuttle. Had to send us down to this… this wretched pit!”
In one fluid motion, she stands and shoves Andi off her haunches and onto the ground, landing non-gently on her rear.
Andi, for her part, is too stunned to truly react. And even if she wasn’t, a part of her is saying to let this play out. That Zephira might need this. Pride comes before the fall, rage before the ego adjustment. She just stares up at the altrusian, eyes wide and mouth wordlessly agape.
Zephira’s shoulders heave as she looms above the downed terran, fingers clenching into fists. Briefly, but only briefly, her eyes flick to the plasma rifle in the dirt near them. She scoffs loudly and turns, storming past both the rifle and Andi as she heads into the log shelter, presumably to steam."

a conversation snippet between a pair of stranded enemies of different species: "“You’re frustrating, terran,” Zephira says under her breath as she takes a bit of the ration. She forces from her mind the fact that her lips are now touching the same utensil that touched Andi’s.
“Is that why you never call me by my name?” Andi asks idly, not looking up from her wrist.
“No. I just don’t remember it,” Zephira states. It’s a lie, of course—her memory isn’t so weak that she’d forget the name of the terran she was charged with capturing.
Andi doesn’t believe her, either, but she doesn’t push the point.
“It’s Andi. Andi McCloud.”
“Ugly name,” Zephira says without sparing a second to think.
Andi laughs, resting against the curved bark wall behind her and shaking her head.
“Okay. So what’s your name, then? I’m sure it’s beautiful.”
Zephira clears her throat, straightening her back.
“Princess Zephira Allacasta Tocanna Riverre, twenty-third in line to the throne of Altrus.”
Andi whistles lowly.
“That’s a mouthful. How about I call you Zeph?”
Zeph… er, Zephira, glares sharply at Andi, as if her eyes held the power to bisect the arrogant terran.
“If you’re not overly fond of your tongue, try it.”"

“Why would I? You seem suited for this, toiling away for me,” Zephira prods, grinning with a bit of sadistic satisfaction.
Andi drops the pile at the chosen end of their shelter and braces an arm against the bark, shooting Zephira a glare.
“I hate you, you know that?”
“Trust me, terran, the feeling is mutual.”"

“Were you a normal soldier, no,” Zephira says, her eyes briefly tracing over the set of Andi's form, “we make it a point to execute any military members from a conquered species. Less likely to rise up if a species has no skilled warriors left.”
“But I'm not a normal soldier.”
“No, you're not. The plan was to drag you through our streets as an example. Broadcast your humiliation across our territory and your own, crush the spirit of your people, show them the price of defiance.”
“And then?” Andi asks in morbid curiousity.
Zephira pauses for a moment, turning to look up at the ceiling like she saw a particularly interesting bug and not like she's unable to look Andi in the eye.
“Typically, we'd put you to death as spectacle. But my plan was to keep you as my own. A symbol of my victory. A trophy.”
Andi stares at the laid-low warlord before her for a long, silent few seconds.
“You think you could ever put out the fire in me?” she asks.
“The fire can be put out in anyone, if you smother it long enough.” Zephira says cooly,"
