Working as a translator professionally, I can tell you it happens for 3 reasons. 1) Non-English speaking managers above translators make all final decisions and do not ask for native input on final product. 2) No native English-speaking translator editors. Respect to OP Craig Hoffman.

This trend from Japan always threw me: the reversed peace sign directly in front of the chin. In the US, it was the sign for cunnilingus (not sure if that's still true) and so it was pretty jarring to see young Japanese women posing like this.
I probably missed my calling, but I kid you not, one other older immigrant in Japan and I were thinking of starting a "rent an older foreign uncle" biz. Maybe it's not too late.
