Happy Juneteenth! ♥️🖤💚💛 If you're visiting the library, be sure to check out the Juneteenth flag craft at all of our branches today!

Celebrate Juneteenth! In the aftermath the Civil War, Union troops went to Galveston Bay, TX to free the remaining enslaved people. It was on that day that 250,000 people learned they had actually been liberated two years prior by the Emancipation Proclamation. This day has been known as "Juneteenth" and for 160 years it has been celebrated as the day that freedom finally rang for all Americans.

Pan-Africanism colors used in Juneteenth celebrations:
RED represents sacrifices made in the struggle for freedom.
BLACK represents African ancestry and heritage.
GREEN represents growth and renewal.
YELLOW represents hope and prosperity.

Juneteenth Flag:
RED, White, and Blue represent African American’s important roles in American history.
The White Star represents Texas where the last enslaved people were freed.
The Star Burst is a new beginning.
The Arc represents a horizon and new opportunities.
