spent the day in the shop with my dad building a box out of fence pickets from the fence they installed in 1991. these are some of the constructed panels. also, the party at which i was going to give it to my friends got postponed bc weather so i have extra week to add some finishing touches!

two sides and a bottom panel of a wooden box that is not yet assembled leaning against a red craftsman rolling toolbox with black drawers and silver handles. the shop is in the basement and the floor is grey concrete and the white door to the test is the basement is in the background. the wood from the box is beautifully weathered because it is made from reclaimed fence pickets that had been exposed to Pennsylvania weather for nearly 30 years. the panels are framed and have slats running horizontally. there is a peek-hole from a knot in the wood in one of the side slats. I'm making the box for a very large needle-felted dinosaur and i want it to look like a shipping crate for a museum piece

this project is FINALLY about finished! going to Pittsburgh today for a few carpentry details to complete the whole project & tomorrow will gift it to two of the most kind & generous people I've ever known 🦕

a detail of a needle-felted Diplodocus carnegii kind of friend from the back. the wool is mixed metallic roving in deep red copper with pinks. the dinosaur is meant to look like the bronze Dippy statue outside the Carnegie Museum of Natural History. along the spine of the felted dinosaur a long row of raised spines formed from curls of roving. the project sits on an old tv table in our living room. there is a flannel sheet curtain closing our living room off from the front room and porch to keep the smoke out and ac in. there are framed art pieces on the wall and jackets hang on the back of the door across the room

watched the smoke roll in from across the lake & then nothing seemed real for the rest of the day

a blue car in a parking lot across the street from a big red Sheetz gas station in the background. there are traffic lights indicating an intersection. the picture shows mostly strange sky in late afternoon which doesn't match the light that is more like dusk. the sun is an angry hazy orange eye in the thick cloud layer of wildfire smoke. by morning, it'll smell like distant campfire

the mother duck was POSITIVELY QUACKING at them for not staying put while she was gone (understandably.) the ducklings, trying to scramble out of the water, hopped on the paddleboard. MOM WHAT DO I DO?! arcade yelled. you enjoy being chosen by some ducklings! that's what you do, you lucky duck! 🦆

four ducklings floating very close to the dock where I was sitting. they are swimming over some really tangles seaweed in the lake and making little ripples on the calm surface of the water. they do have some of their fluffy yellow feathers but are mostly brown and white with stripes around their eyes.

tried a new spot with the paddleboard last night & it was pretty pretty pretty good

a sunset picture of a little protected cove of the West Pier at Presque Isle State Park. the sun is dipping below the horizon in a hazy sky with feathery clouds. the sun is reflected in hot orange on the water. the main peninsula is visible across the cove. some dry summer weeds are in the left foreground. the water is placid.

a picture taken from one of the docks of a tween sitting crisscross applesauce on my paddleboard, the Tippy Canoe. the kid is paddling out to the lagoon by some dudes fishing off the docks. there are ripples on the water from boats coming in from the lake for the night. the last of the evening blue sky is melting into purple sunset.

sac spiders can get pretty big & look at the mark on this yellow sac spider...I think Google is confused

yellow sac spider has long creepy legs with dark joints on its legs. it is golden yellow with a brown line on it's abdomen, similar to a brown recluse

Seek says sac spider. in Pittsburgh, I'd say sac spider sounds right for my nerves but I'd also stay tf away from it/get it outside. alternatively, it just owns that room now

a big female brown recluse spider about the size of a quarter for scale next to presumably a male of the same species. there is a conspicuously darker brown line on the center of the abdomen / picture yanked from hub pages

got sent directly into the Millcreek Independence Day parade route 🫠 somehow managed 38 of 44 stops then nope'd right back home for the first coffee I've had in 3 days... so anyway, I'm incredibly sorry you aren't getting your red, white, & blue tablecloth or whatever for your bbq today, Jan 🇺🇸

my coffee cup is on the porch table which has an oilcloth tablecloth with big yellow, orange, and pink flowers. the rail of the porch is visible in the background as is a pot of seedlings on the rail and a little bit of monstera from plant table. my white fingertips are visible reaching for the mug handle. the mug is white and has a very cut muscular angry looking Uncle Sam with a furrowed brow, rolling up the white sleeves of his shirt to his elbows to show his clenched fist and Bruce Springsteen-looking arms. Uncle Sam has white hair under a red and white striped hat, a longv white chin beard, a sun tan from working outside or possibly UV-maxxing. he is wearing a star spangled vest and pants with red and white stripes. around him the text says HAPPY BIRTHDAY AMERICA in red and blue letters

maiden paddleboard voyage! Presque Isle State Park. the lake is perfect for swimming. went out past the breakers for sunset. no phone on the water but here is a picture of my car before we left. it was everything I was hoping it would be 🥹

a sky blue 2011 Honda crv is parked on the street in front of our house, a world war 2 duplex home made mostly of brick with 2 levels. there is a porch on each floor; ours is upstairs. on top of the car is an inflatable paddleboard on a soft roof rack. it is tied down with black cord at the front and back and there are black straps holding it to the car. the sun is in the west and there is enough time to get to the library and then to the lake to get out on the water for sunset.

raspberry sorbet pincushion zinnias, pompon zinnias, & canary bird dahlias... all of them are in! let's goooooo!

a small garden in front of the downstairs porch of a world war 2 era duplex home. the porch rail is painted gross faded brown. the cinder block porch foundation is also painted brown. there are pillars of brick that match the rest of the building. a giant arborvitae caps the far left of the garden and a square fake plastic terracotta planter with chives and lambs ear growing in it is next to the tree. in the middle of the plot is a small mound of yarrow I put in at the beginning of spring. in front of that are violets with no flowers that I'm allowing to spread a little. at the far right, a lemon balm plant has been cut back for iced tea. in the back right of the garden is a lime green trellis tied to the pitch and the railing of the stairs to the right. morning glory plants that have taken over the garden previously have been tamed to climb the trellis. looking up at the trellis from the right corner is a glossy watermelon pink cast iron pig with wings. Saint Francis watches over approvingly from the edge of the porch. in diagonal rows across all the empty space are very small seedlings of raspberry sorbet zinnias which will be several shades of purple, canary bird dahlias that are big yellow guys, and some pink pompon zinnias. right now all the seedlings are small with small green leaves and are barely distinguishable from the others. the soil has been recently watered with rain barrel water and the sun is starting to ease off. thankfully, none of the small plants seem to be wilting in the heat

the cat knows how to chill, alternating between laying in the cool cast iron tub & any spot he can find near a fan. he plans to sleep through the impending heatwave.

a goofy tuxedo floofy cat lays half sleeping on his back and slightly twisted so his back legs are splayed wide open and his front paws are reaching up in front of him like he is in mid fall. you can see his pink pinto beans and one black bean on his left front paw. it isn't very graceful but a guy has to try to keep cool. he is laying on grey carpet near a white trimmed door and grey painted walls.

so uh... the squirrels on the east side are very obviously mutating. probably should be just a little concerned that's all...I mean how bad could a bunch of these guys coming after you for your PBJ really be? 🏡🐿️

a picture of a street with half of a very old blue Honda crv with it's trunk open pulled up at the curb. in the background is a yellow house and green yard and a tree growing to the left of the front door. framed by the tree and the trunk door is a giant fucking red squirrel lawn ornament eating some unreasonably huge acorns.

a closer picture of the giant squirrel under the tree but this time to the left of the yellow house we can see a bit of the neighbors blue grey house. there is a charcoal grey Hyundai suv parked in the driveway but it is slightly obscured by a trimmed bush. even so, we can see the huge scale of the mutant squirrel who is really into those giant nuts they found.

a really close up photo of the giant squirrel. it is sitting upright and making direct eye contact with you. in it's giant front paws, it is clasping an appropriately scaled acorn and seems to be nibbling on the top of the acorn, not the nut for some reason. there are a few more giant acorns between it's back paws. it would definitely fight you to keep it's nut cache.

successfully installed the rain barrel last night before all the rain & it is full. the basement isn't even flooded! great success! 💦

a picture taken on the side of our house. a white rain gutter runs from the rain gutters to the french drain. to the left of it, a brown plastic rain barrel rests on a 3 level cinder block stand. there is a small black tube connecting the rain barrel to a diverter now installed inside the rain gutter. behind the rain barrel is the lower level front porch rail which is brown wood. a glass block basement window is visible in the lower right and the sidewalk runs between houses to the back door. their is no grass between our house and the neighbor's house but there is a solid bright green moss colony, a spot of which can be seen at the lower left. there are still some tiny spent lilac blossoms still stuck in it even though the lilacs finished almost 3 weeks ago.

needed to weed the front garden & put in the morning glory trellis. instead, started prepping the soil behind our back fence for wildflower & teddy bear sunflower seeds but also ended up on this OTHER side quest ...all clear side effects of my main ADHD meds being on backorder for almost 2 weeks

a third-hand cast iron pig with wings given to me last summer. was it painted like a cow? I think so? it is a very faded white with what look like black circles drawn on, potentially with sharpie. it has been in the garden of the house my best girl bought & shows rust at the feet and belly and coming through in spots in the wings and ears. the pig is laying on it's side on a piece of cardboard in the sun.

the same pig described in the first image, on her back, and stay painted with a first coat of krylon colormaxx spray paint and primer in gloss watermelon. the can is laying on the cardboard next to the pig. the front garden remains un-weeded.

first yard snacks are in! the neighbor's tangle of invasive trees has one big white mulberry branch coming over to our side in such a way that I can pick the berries. the cedar waxwings are in the up up gobbling them up & I get to share sun-warm perfectly ripe mulberries with the birds 🥹

we stopped for 🌮 🔔 happy hour on the way back from the peninsula & was i a little dehydrated? YES. maybe a little too long in peak sun? SURE...but I also think my 🧠 would have read 'DANG GYRL' on the Greek Festival sign across the street in even the most ideal circumstances 🌊 🏖️ ☀️🧋

a typical American beach town intersection lined with telephone poles and wires, a wide crosswalk across the street, and a McDonald's hiding down the street inasmuch as a huge McDonald's sign can hide. there are cars driving towards the beach which we can't see. there is a big sign advertising the upcoming Greek Festival that says DANEGYRI in an expected font that reminds one of a gyro place. it like like it says Dang Girl

found this lady just after dawn in a pile of weird free stuff on the side of the road way east of the city. it's okay, ma'am. you're safe now. you can stay with us but also please do *not* curse our home 🙏🏻

a bleached out old coffee table on our porch in front of an old aluminum glider with the original retro plasticy cushions. the print on the cushions is of giant white flowers mixed in with big flowers in several different shades of green. there is a beige outdoor rug on the wooden deck floor.. the rug has a border that is made up mostly of triangles in pink and sage green. on top of the coffee table is an enormous jade plant in a pot that is sitting on an old rectangle glass refrigerator tray. next to the plant is the bust of a woman whose face has been painted in Dia de los Muertos style. she has brown hair pulled in to of her head that spills down her back. she is wearing a bright blue dress with pink edging at the low neckline. her face has large green circles around her eyes. hey skin is painted clown white and there is a half spider web on her forehead. there are stitches on either side of her mouth. her eyes are closed and she appears to be smiling.

the same bust as in the previous picture only now we are looking at her from the front. we can see that her brown hair is pulled up but her girls are spilling over her right shoulder. she is looking to her left and, were her eyes open, she would have a downward gaze. there is scroll work painted on her neck and clavicle and in the center of her chest is a red heart with flames.

accidentally interrupted crimes this morning

a picture of a suburban brick sidewalk leaking to a step of a front porch. they are red and white flowers in a pot on the left side of the step and magenta flowers in the garden on the left side of the step. there is a corner of grass in the frame on the right side of the step. on the sidewalk, partially hidden by the grass, a little suburb-loving rabbit sits plotting crimes with a red bisque toad that is as big as they are. they got suddenly quiet when I came up the walk.

my pawpaw sapling is getting bb leaves 🥹

a video closeup picture of a very thin twig. there are blurry green rhododendron leaves in the background. the sapling is planted in a very hopefully large container. there are teeny tiny baby leaves coming out on the twig, a good sign.

a very handsome floofy tuxedo cat called Boba Tea, curled up in the late Sunday afternoon sun on a big old red foot rest in front of a rocking chair with pillows in a reading nook of our front room. there are books in the shelves. one pillow has green embroidered bugs on white fabric and the other is a bike that says Let's Ride. there is a map of Presque Isle State Park on the wall behind the chair. on the floor in front of the bookcase are some paintings and other art.

first day off in forever! got an apricot pastry with a fancy name I don't remember from herb & honey. had with espresso on the porch playing Carcassonne with Arcade... the aliens from Nope have arrived for their family vacation at the lake

a picture taken from our porch of a perfectly blue sky over the trees and telephone and electric wires on our street. at the left you can see the side of the porch three doors down. there are four puffy white clouds that do not make sense and that have barely moved despite the wind, a clear indication that these are alien spaceships or perhaps aliens themselves. watch the skies. the truth is it there.

Carcassonne & this tablecloth forever, please

a picture taken at the edge of our porch table. the table is covered with a tightly clipped oilcloth tablecloth in a floral pattern. the flowers are very brightly colored like tattoo flash flowers in yellow, orange, blue, lime green, and red. a 2 player game of Carcassonne using green and black meeps. the Carcassonne tiles out together form a map of cities, roads, farms, and monasteries. all of the colors in the city tiles match the tablecloth. the farms are green. the white lines of the roads echo the white outline around the flowers on the tablecloth. the bits of red on the monasteries match the red flowers. the late afternoon sun is bright and pleasantly warm and the green bits on the tiles have an almost vglittery surface. the last line of shade on the porch cuts across the frame. the player with the black meeps guys on to win by a landslide.
