Healthy fast food chain Leon Restaurants saw sales at its eight branches around London fall 20 per cent during the recent super-hot spell — but founder John Vincent claims the dip in takings at the till wasn’t solely down to the weather.

Well that's the best author photo I've seen in a while.

The author photo for the Wikipedia entry for the Wallonian poet Paul Dermée. He is wearing pince-nez glasses and has a squint which is dramatically accentuated by his wide-eyed smiling expression. He has a moustache like a wild & bellicose moth. His open-mouthed smile is slightly off kilter, which has the effect of making it seem like his teeth curve away in the middle of his mouth. His ears are sizeable with very pronounced, bulbous lobes, behind which his hair thickens as it falls wildly about his head. His attire is formal.

Freakin eerie

LLMs are most useful for people who know what they are doing – experienced people who can spot errors quickly, know the obvious pitfalls, and feel frustrated they can’t get more junior staff to do exactly the thing they asked for. They are made for the kind of people who think “if only there were 10 of me” on a regular basis and who might secretly wish they were still doing the job they got promoted from 15 years ago.

Watched this last night. A court room drama, but not as you know it. The IMF & the World Bank put on trial on behalf of the African people in a courtyard in Bamako with a capricious doorman, a beautiful singer, & various neighbourhood characters coming & going outside.

Murals in Southsea, Portsmouth 🤗

Mural on the side of a building next to an empty lot boarded off with graffiti fencing. The mural depicts a tree reminiscent of a stone pine above a kind of mound in the wilderness. Midway up the bifurcating trunk of the tree is a platform loaded with books. A humanoid with a crow's head is reading a book called The Tree of Knowledge. Lodged in some branches further up is a spaceship or diving bell, spherical with lower half red, upper half metallic grey, and two round portholes in which a city is reflected in silhouette.

Side of a building on which most of the windows have been boarded up save two, which give onto more wooden boards in the interior. The ground level of the building is turquoise, upper levels dirty creamy off white. A sea monster dominates the whole surface in monochrome, grey & black and light in places. It holds a trident in its spindly arms that quite resembles the tail fin of the monster pointing upward to the side of it, a kind of web of tentacles. The monster has two small pectoral fins and a dorsal fin spine stretching to the head, which has two very human, soft eyes with deep brows & two fins for cheeks, below which there is no mouth - the head finishes abruptly. Two webby ears point upward like a crown. The lower body is scaly, there's a girdle midway up, and the upward body has strange blurry shapes that could be craters or barnacles.
The shop front next door has a smaller image painted on the ground floor level, of a manatee.

Google Maps shows the location of Devil's Beeftub, purportedly a scenic point, open 24 hours, no disabled access, Google rating 4.8. Google Maps offers you the opportunity to "see similar places". Photos of the location show hillsides typical of the Scottish borders where the Devil's Beeftub is, with reddish bracken covering large areas.

Attended a very illuminating conversation between translator & poet Sam Solomon & M Syd Rosen of Jargon ( a London cultural initiative with a focus on Yiddish) about the poet Celia Dropkin, who was active in New York in the early 20th c. Wonderful to hear readings from the Yiddish as well as English

Celia Dropkin's lyrics come fully loaded. They are erotically frank and emotionally unabashed, deeply engendered, relentlessly truthful. They are terse and musical, like songs, and carefully constructed to explode with maximum impact.

These remarkably vivid poems could be titled something like "Sensation-And How To Think It." They are carefully made, but the poet allows herself a certain carelessness to say the unsayable. She is interested in violence and tenderness together, as our nervous systems seem to be. There are lovely Reznikoffian glimpses of Manhattan; there are the pleasures of the short poem-the poem passing but lingering. The poems are of their time in the best possible way: you want to be there then, too. Early in the 20th century, in New York, having learned Yiddish or some other language new to you, watching a new age be born as if that were natural. This is a unique moment, still alive. The poems are still alive.

Among the more experimental Yiddish poets in early twentieth-century New York, Dropkin was significant both for her exploration of open verse as a compositional strategy & for her assertions of female desire beyond the limits observed by most of her contemporaries, both in Yiddish & in English. Dropkin participated in the already active Yiddish poetry world, including the experimental In-Zikh (Introspectivist) poets, while developing more markedly transgressive themes than theirs: sexuality, depression, guilt & longing, fury, violence, even at its limits the representation of sado-masochism & other taboo, once hidden subjects. Her work in that sense is a further confirmation of Kenneth Rexroth's observation: "A good case could be made for the claim that the best writing done in America in the first quarter of the [twentieth] century was in Yiddish."

Last but not least, the escalation of armed conflicts between rulers disrupted the trans-European networks of trade on which they depended to obtain means of war and subjects depended for their livelihood. The costs and risks of moving goods across political jurisdictions increased dramatically, and supplies were diverted from the provision of means of livelihood to the provision of means of war. It is plausible to suppose that this disruption and diversion of trade flows contributed far more decisively than demographic and climatic factors to the sudden worsening problem of vagrancy and to the "subsistence crisis" which constitute the social and economic backdrop of the general crisis of legitimacy of the seventeenth century (cf. Braudel and Spooner 1967; Romano 1985; Goldstone 1991).
