Recently, you may have noticed a large hatch of mayflies, or fishflies. Mayfly adults are short-lived and don't feed, dying shortly after mating and laying their eggs. Hatches often happen over just a couple days, their massive numbers helping at least some adults survive to mating and egg-laying.

If you zoom in on an aquatic insect, you might see a mite! These larval mites were on the underside of a giant water bug specimen. As parasitic larvae, they attach to and feed on the blood of their host. Once they're nymphs, they drop off the host and become active hunters, looking for smaller prey.

The whole cluster of them is about the size of a poppy seed.

Eastern Cottonwood is a fast-growing tree that reaches around 25-m tall, but some individuals have grown to a whopping 37-m! These trees are known for their copious amounts of cottony seeds that are easily carried on the wind and can look like a fluffy coating of cottony snow. #WildflowerWednesday

Nothing beats ice cream on a hot day in Manitoba! This wrapper was from a chocolate ice cream made locally by the People’s Co-operative Ltd, which was founded in 1928 in Winnipeg. This particular treat was named "Carmichael" after a polar bear who came to the Assiniboine Park Zoo as a cub in 1939!

Just over 100 years ago – Canada Day, July 1, 1923 – the Chinese Exclusion Act came into law, effectively banning all Chinese immigration into Canada from 1923 to 1947. To date it remains the only time in Canadian history that a single community was targeted for total exclusion.

While drilling for rocks in Two Creeks, Manitoba, this tiny tooth plate was discovered within a rock core sample. About 350 million years old, this fossil comes from a group of cartilaginous fish known as the Holocephali and is a rare example of a fossil from the Carboniferous Period. #FossilFriday

The jingle dress is one style of regalia worn by First Nations women and girls during special events like powwows. Jingle dress also refers to the dance performed while wearing the dress, known for its light footwork and the characteristic tinkling or jingling of the metal cones adorning the dress.

Upper body and 3/4 length puffed sleeves are blue on bottom and burgundy; Skirt is two layers, blue on bottom, burgundy on top; Five sets of tin cones on front and back; One set on upper body and sleeves, Three sets on skirt and one set along hem; Cones are tin snuff lids bent and secured to blue cloth strips knotted on inside; Applied to dress with blue cloth border except for hem which is burgundy; Yellow rick-rack trim on top of border and around cuffs.

Covered in white hairs, and with purple-blue flowers, Prairie Turnip is named for its starchy root! Prairie Turnips were a source of starch to Indigenous Peoples who lived on the Great Plains. The root could be eaten raw, boiled, or ground and dried to use as a thickening agent. #WildflowerWednesday
