And lest that be the only impact of climate change we are dealing with, once again just over one year after the devastating Camp Mystic disaster, a flash flood emergency in the areas around my hometown of San Antonio, TX.
Airnow.gov is GRIM right now. The amount of incredibly poor air across the Great Lakes region is incredible. While the images of the orange skies look dystopian, the real cost of this will be felt by vulnerable populations who will suffer dramatic health effects and in certain cases even death.
Even after heavy rain removing a ton of the aerosols this is what our northernmost monitor is showing. Just incredibly awful air.
The HRRR is forecasting values approaching 200 micrograms per cubic meter this afternoon as well.
This is only the start of the worst air for NYC. Visible sat clearly shows the heart of the plume is still north of the city.
@weacttogether.bsky.social CAMP network of in northern Manhattan is currently showing how unhealthy the air is outside. There is a range of very unhealthy readings with the worst showing an AQI of 180. You can access the monitors via the Just Air platform here: justair.app/iframe?org=W...
omg it is so EMPTY! I can hear it up in Takoma as a constant rumble from the direction of the mal. This is absolutely insane as catering to someone's ego. WOW
This will not be good for activities on the National Mall later. #OhNo
Dew points substantially lower today so far which should help keep the heat index lower although we are already at 99 degrees and it’s barely noon. Heat index of 102.
It was a mistake to leave the apartment for lunch. This is in the shade!
Good luck getting a crowd over the next few days as we challenge the all time high temp in DC through the weekend
This is AI slop right? On an article against AI data centers? Also did they literally create AI slop that made Hasan Piker one of the protestors?
Pretty incredible temps for Friday out of the Euro this morning. Of note, DC's all time high is 106 so this would absolutely shatter that if it verified. Just incredibly dangerous temps.
The joy of rail travel in our “first” world country were routine summer time temps cause long delays. We are so unprepared for climate change.
Going through recent @enviroprotnet.bsky.social polling and these numbers are no longer surprising to me but it really does make it clear how the motivation for EPA rollbacks is not to satisfy voters but rather the polluters themselves because voters clearly do not want this.
Not that this is a shock, but just nice to see NJ officially double down on a new progressive voice in Congress. Things are awful out in the country right now, but there are significant progressive gains happening.
God damn it I hate Cruz so much and now he’s cursed my Spurs too.
Just now seeing this, but Saul and @astra.bsky.social really get it just right in this piece on data center organizing. With the exception of the last bit, I dare you to tell me that environmental justice isn't the right vehicle to address this in a bipartisan way!
If these MVPs aren't on the charter to OKC what are the Spurs even doing?
On the way back from NYC this weekend, I diverted to check out the Delaware state forest in PA and enjoyed several hours listening and watching warblers do their thing. Was wonderful. Here's one of my photos, an oven bird carries material to build its nest. #birds #birdphotography
The next several of days were spent mostly on my drive back to DC. I made several stops and did quite a bit of birding, but was only able to capture one more photo that I truly enjoyed. This prothonotary warbler singing its heart out in Bogue Chitto NWR. #birds #birdphotography
I spent the next day around High Island but the constant rain made photography tough. I was able to get some good looks at least bittern at Jocelyn Nungaray National Wildlife Refugre, though! #bird #birdphotography
At the end of the day, the light was just getting amazing, and this might be my favorite black throated green photo I've ever taken. I absolutely love warblers, y'all. I don't have a spark bird, but warblers were definitely what really made me fall in love with birding. #birds #birdphotography
