Great time meeting with ENS labs and catching up with my closest friends from my PhD in Boston! Diane Yang will be on the faculty job market soon - we will try to recruit her to CWRU but am not afraid of competition, keep your eyes out for her! www.researchgate.net/scientific-c...
Great (and funny) presentation by Nadia Mukasine, our undergrad, on her last day in the lab! It was an emotional moment as she shared how transformational the experience was for her, instilling confidence and certainty to pursue a PhD Keep an eye out for her 👀
New painting to honor my brilliant trainee, Cali Thompson, who conceptualized this epic sign for the 2025 Stand Up for Science protest that I then drew for her and now painted to hang in the lab
The lab will hit year 2 on August 1st! Starting to evaluate annual climate surveys along with our monthly word clouds. For the latter, here is how we did this past year:
I ❤️ data Same 6 mile run, two different vibes. Thank you Beyoncé
Congratulations to both Rishi Deshmukh and Sunny Eoh for funding of their NIH T32 proposals!!! So proud of them both and excited for all the cool science to come Two more corks on the line & a group photo with my 4yo's stuffed dog that she urged me to take with me today "to meet the lab"
Working with undergrads is such a trip 😂 (name redacted to not embarrass student. bet)
Lab next door got a neon astrocyte sign!!! Slowly transforming the floor
All hands in @ the Scavuzzo lab (minus Michael Kovach, JP Flores, and Sohan Gangam)
Need a bigger office!!! Birthday appreciation notes for Joel. Dream team
Major highlight: Watching @begumaydin.bsky.social give her lab overview on the @hhmi-science.bsky.social stage!
Best meeting of the year every year. What a remarkable community @hhmi-science.bsky.social
2020 Hanna Gray group photo, shot on my phone by Ohio based ENS development expert and 2025 Hanna Gray Fellow Maple Adkins-Threats 😂 👵
The next day, the lab all ate cookies at 3pm, forcing blue smiles to persist throughout the work day. I get Slack messages like @8:23am - “blue at 8:23am!!!” 🫣 And voila - the first lab whole gut transit time assay (8/15 of us at least), plus 6/? from Jay Ave I think we all grew closer this summer
Fun to bump into Juan Jeffrey and Laolu Ogunnaike, two all star volunteers for @riseupneo.bsky.social, out in the wild at Larchmere Porchfest Volunteer or donate to Rise Up to support public school science education!!! www.riseupnortheastohio.org
Great to spend time with ENS expert and good friend @begumaydin.bsky.social, @glialsciences.bsky.social director and good friend Raeka Aiyar, Pasteur Fdn director and new friend Emily Warne, and brain scientist with a brain Daniel Hochbaum in NYC! A major highlight: meeting Begüm’s cat 🐱
Before joining, JP has set up collaborations with pioneers in this space (hi @michelegabriele.bsky.social 👋) via his Fulbright award, which will fuel his work as he trains side by side with Michele in Italy Really excited to have him join our team and for all of his upcoming discoveries! /fin
So incredibly excited that @jpflores.rbind.io is officially joining the lab as an @hhmi-science.bsky.social Gilliam Postdoctoral Fellow! 1/3
Had a blast sharing our science in comedy format as the guinea pig for Rowan Barker-Clarke's new show! Thx to Stephanie Ginese and the whole improv troupe for only making a few 💩 jokes What a creative way to increase science literacy and bring what is happening in research labs to the public
Congratulations to Aaliyah Staples-West, now a PhD candidate in the lab! Champagne celebration followed by her hanging her cork on the line 🍾
Amazing seminar yesterday at CWRU by Mat Victor from Icahn School of Medicine!
Spring showers bring annual lab spring picnics indoors Enjoyed an afternoon of art with the lab 🎨
Was Told 12 Times by Hock E Aye Vi Edgar Heap of Birds
Teaching these kids young the importance of model organisms! Fun to see this very pro-Drosophila slide in one of the group's introduction during the annual symposium "They have led to important scientific discoveries!" @riseupneo.bsky.social
My mother had an experimental surgery to save her life when she was 14 in rural Pennsylvania. Her story is a major inspiration for me as a scientist. 6 years after her surgery, the doctor delivering me in FL recognized her name from his medical training in PA. Life is weird but moms are awesome
Congratulations to Scavuzzo lab PhD students: -Cali Thompson for winning best poster award! -Aaliyah Staples-West for flawlessly organizing her first meeting! -Rishi Deshmukh for an amazing first lab poster presentation! Strong presence at the CWRU Genetics Retreat 🙌
“What do you do for fun as a lab?” “Whole gut transit time assays”
