Earth during the Silurian Period circa 430 million years ago. The plants (they are not flowers) are called cooksonia, and were one of the first widespread land plants. The tall things (8m or 25ft) are prototaxites. Notbody is sure what they were, but may have been fungi. #sciart #blender #paleoart

Some of the various Titan illustrations I've created over the years. Titan is the largest moon in the Solar System. It's bigger even than our own Moon. It has a thick nitrogen atmosphere, and lakes of hydrocarbons. Note: you cannot see Saturn from Titan as the atmosphere is too dense.

Latest artwork, created this afternoon in #Blender and Photoshop. I don't usually give my artworks 'poetic' titles. Usually this would be 'Tyrannosaurs Regarding comet' or something equally prosaic. But I decided to break with tradition, and named it 'Impending Doom'. #sciart #paleoart

This illustration, created in Blender and Photoshop, shows a scene from the end of the Cretaceous Period in Earth's history. A pair of tyrannosaurs - a mother and infant - cross a water-logged landscape, while a comet looms in the sky. A comet or asteroid is widely thought to have provoked the extinction of the dinosaurs at the end of this Period, when it collided with Earth. It was not the worst mass extinction in Earth's potted timeline, but it was certainly the swiftest. The dinosaurs and many other creatures would be extinct months after this event, if not sooner.

A startled tyrannosaur surveys a desolate landscape, depicting a scene at the end of the Cretaceous period in Earth's history. A massive meteorite has impacted the Earth, causing catastrophic destruction on a global scale. Volcanic eruptions are just one example of the after-effects of the impact. They release poisonous gases that lace the atmosphere with toxins, suffocating wildlife. And wildfires, like those illustrated here, would have swept across the globe, prompted by infalling debris heating the atmosphere. It was probably the worse day in Earth's recorded history, although not the most devastating mass extinction.

These structures are called stromatolites. They are sedimentary formations created by successive layers of microorganisms such as cyanobacteria. Photosynthesis is starting to change the planet forever. Even today, billions of years later, fossilized remains of these unique ecosystems can be seen across the planet.

Ice spires (around 100 metres tall) on Jupiter's moon Callisto. It is thought that these formed from an ancient impact billions of years ago. They are very slowly eroding over time, the ice subliming and dust within the ice accumulating to absorb Sunlight and continue the erosion. #sciart #spaceart

This artwork shows ice spires (around 100 metres tall) on the surface of the Jovian moon Callisto. The moon's parent planet, Jupiter, is in the sky, centre, with the other major moons either side of it. From the left, they are Ganymede, Io (casting a shadow on Jupiter) and Europa (covering Jupiter's might side). It is thought that these spires formed from an ancient impact billions of years ago. They are very slowly eroding over time, the ice subliming and dust within the ice accumulating to absorb Sunlight and continue the erosion. The Callisto-Jupiter distance is around 1.8 million kilometres, and Jupiter is around 140,000 kilometres across.

Modellers! Do any of you recall the horror models from the 70s by Aurora? Frankenstein, Mummy, etc? Some were re-released a while ago by third parties using the original molds. The first model I ever made as a kid was this Hunchback of Notre Dame so I had to buy it again. Immense fun building it!

I'm fed up with all of these stupid names for different 'types' of full Moon. Wolf? And the media just regurgitates this cack ad nauseum. The Moon's distance from the Earth varies by about 11%. You would never notice unless you could compare both closest and farthest Moons side by side. #supermoon
