It’s been doing this for a long time (or at least a close relative has). This is from July 2023 in the same place
Postgraduate medical curricula in UK promise lots on anti-racism training but deliver little. Our new paper highlights the wide gap between the rhetoric and reality. journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/...
2/ We need rigorous, multi-faceted evaluations to ensure that these interventions effectively promote safety without removing essential sources of community and support for vulnerable youth
1/ Our new paper @bmj.com led by Amrit Kaur Purba argues that effects of adolescent social media restrictions are not simple and must be considered within social, technological, commercial, and political contexts. www.bmj.com/content/394/...
How can Andy Burnham’s goal of good growth become a health-creating mission that supports environmental action? Andy Haines and I offer 5 ideas, all based on what already exists somewhere @bmj.com www.bmj.com/content/394/...
I escaped to Nuuk for a week in June - not sure it helped mine! But lots of other advantages.
Europe must learn from America’s assault on science @chrischirp.bsky.social @tiagocorreia.bsky.social & I warn in Eur J Public Health that what is happening there could happen here, with catastrophic consequences @eupha.bsky.social academic.oup.com/eurpub/artic...

So the UK-US Pharma “deal”/“agreement” is now an “arrangement”, with no sign yet of a formal text. Serious case of anticipative compliance by U.K. Just do what we think US might want. @elstorreele.bsky.social www.gov.uk/government/n...
Wonderful to be back at Andrija Stampar School of Public Health in Zagreb with a fantastic group of next generation public health leaders
Don’t disagree with much of what you say but we were quoting from UK’s own “preliminary assessment” of the “deal”. Our main concern, however, is transparency - we still don’t have actual text of agreement. www.gov.uk/government/p...
Given the heat in London, I really couldn’t have timed my trip to Nuuk better. But beyond that, inspired by the amazing scenery and the spirit of the people.
On 10th anniversary of EU referendum, @markgdayan.bsky.social & I asked, @thelancetoncol.bsky.social how Brexit had impacted cancer care in UK. Short answer. Not good, and while some problems mitigated, substantial problems remain. Paper here (£) www.thelancet.com/journals/lan...
Why everyone in public health should read Pope Leo's encyclical Magnifica Humanitas. @tiagocorreia.bsky.social Walter Ricciardi & I endorse his call for moral imagination to ensure technology serves humanity rather than dictating human worth. academic.oup.com/eurpub/artic...
It’s only a matter of time. National Rejoin March @europeanmovement.co.uk
How should Europe respond to US exit from global health preparedness. Our new paper, led by Anja Schreijer w/ @tiagocorreia.bsky.social @talbreht.bsky.social & other @eupha.bsky.social colleagues, proposes an agenda for action academic.oup.com/eurpub/artic...
Primary care in Europe is at crisis point. Our new paper @lancetprimarycare.bsky.social sets out the scale of the problem and calls for a coordinated, lifecycle-based strategy spanning training, recruitment, retention, and late-career roles. www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...
The thugs of the streets of Belfast tonight should recall Sir Edward Carson’s words in 1921. Just like their great grandfathers, they’re being used, not by the Conservatives this time but by others. Those on the streets will go to jail. Not those encouraging them.
Gambling blights local communities. Our new paper, led by @blythejenny.bsky.social w/ @markpetticrew.bsky.social , reports on the formidable barriers those in local government in London face in tackling gambling harms @london.gov.uk www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10....
As health professionals, we've offered a prescription for WHO EMRO - a peace pill. Details @bmj.com www.bmj.com/content/393/...
Its geography, as an island in the Eastern Mediterranean, makes Cyprus vulnerable to spillover from regional conflicts. With colleagues from Cyprus and Greece, we look at what we can learn from its experiences. academic.oup.com/eurpub/artic...
The Baltic Sea has, tragically, become much more important for anyone interested in Europe. I read this excellent book 20 years ago. A superb account of a complex and fascinating region
Given that high denomination banknotes are used widely in money laundering and organised crime, this seems strangely appropriate
🧵1/4 “Scholasticide” is the increasingly common systematic destruction of universities & scholars in conflicts. In our new paper, we argue that it's not just an education issue; it’s a direct attack on health systems and population health.
@drdavidnicholl.bsky.social & I argue that Sadiq Khan @london.gov.uk is entirely within his rights to block the Met Police Palantir deal in our letter in The Times. Not obvious that his critics have read the legislation or understood the highly questionable process used here.
We know we haven’t learned lessons from Covid but @elstorreele.bsky.social makes persuasive case we haven’t learned lessons from Mpox, with implications for how we think about Hantavirus. Never forget that viruses can evolve, especially when we help them. Maybe not this time, but not impossible
An empty flagpole at WHO, in the U section. Given current state of US preparedness, maybe WHO might consider hoisting the Yellow Jack, the plague flag.
I’m at a meeting in Mexico City that, in normal circumstances, would have been held in the US. But these are not normal circumstances… It’s simply too risky for many people. But it is an opportunity to see some stunning bits I’ve missed on previous visits.
