We crossed to the produce department. Food is one of the top things that are stolen, Smith informed me. I already knew this, but he explained that this is in part because it is difficult to tag. Also, in recent years, food prices have skyrocketed. After recent cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, 10 percent of families have reported missing meals for lack of food, and nearly 16 percent rely on food donations. We did not discuss this last part.

No longer online, but years ago I interviewed legendary comic artist Joe Kubert, mostly about his approach to war comics. But this response always stuck with me...

Does this debate about the respectability of comic books mean anything to you?

No, I'm not going to take that burden on my back! All I try to do – and have tried to do since I started - is to not be ashamed of what I've done. It started when I was a kid. I was 12 or 13 when I sold my first work, and even at that point I knew my parents would see it. I wasn't about to show them something I was ashamed of, or something I could've drawn on a toilet wall. As I grew older and had children of my own, I couldn't bring myself to do things that would embarrass me or them. I don't describe myself as a puritan - but I've been very lucky in this business, and I just haven't had to do anything I didn't want to do.

Love this spooky paragraph from Graham Greene's 'A Day Saved'.

Who was he? I never knew his name. He was short and ordinary in appearance and he carried an umbrella, his hat was a bowler; and he wore brown gloves. But this was his importance to me: he carried something I dearly, despairingly wanted. It was beneath his clothes, perhaps in a pouch, a purse, perhaps dangling next to his skin. Who knows how cunning the most ordinary man can be? Surgeons can make clever insertions. He may have carried it even closer to his heart than the outer skin.
