They were tips from a professional oil painter for using actual oil paint for portraits lol The other tip from him was also that you gotta have the shadows and highlights assigned in the first 2-5 mins and that would dictate if it would be a successful portrait, and not the amount of lines/details
o yea the other thing about how i draw is that i put the colour down first and then the lines
so with "unusual" colours, play with desaturation to bridge the gap between the saturated colours and use the saturated colours sparingly while keeping the object's value logic. that's the very quick unsolicited advice lol- art is very reliant on the optical illusion
Colour is all about tricking the eye, ex in these pictures below I am using a grey yellow, not green. But the redness of the pinks/magenta mess up the perception of the yellow to make its greyness come across as green. (see pics 3 and 4 re very desat colour looking green with reddish colours)
Do you mean scared of picking two colours that aren't the hue of the original? If you mix them together to use their more desaturated versions/mixes+use only a little of their real saturations, you'd be good. It's easier to make something look more vibrant when its desat (other img from the answer)
