While I'm assigning blame, I shouldn't leave out myself. Last October, when stories about Platner's tattoo and Reddit posts first broke, I went to Maine to write about him. I tried to convey what I saw: a campaign that was electrifying angry Maine voters. But I deeply regret that, impressed by Platner's political charisma, I wrote that he was "nothing like the edgelord caricature I encountered online." If anything, he seems to be significantly worse.

One person who tried to alert Democrats was Platner's former political director, Genevieve McDonald. She quit when the first Platner scandals emerged and has been increasingly outspoken against him. Progressive operatives made her seem like a vindictive person eager to curry favor with Maine's political establishment. In retrospect, she looks much more like someone who took a profound professional risk to do the right thing. I can't be the only one who regrets not taking her more seriously.

@jortsthecat.bsky.social Jorts, watermelon salad always makes me think of you because of a conversation years ago on the Other Site, so I saved you a little bit of my dinner: it’s watermelon, basil, and mint (all cat-safe), plus a TINY bit of feta & a little a salami (all cat-safe in small amounts).

Two chunks of watermelon sit in a paper bowl with a blue edge. They have multiple bits of green leaves (basil and mint) stuck to them and they are sprinkled with tiny bits of white (crumbled feta). A tiny piece of cappocollo (a type of salami), only slightly bigger than 1/4 of a mint leaf, sits on top of one of the watermelon pieces.

Update to the photo and photo description: Now that I’ve put my sticker where it goes (the Wall of Stickers), I can see that what I previously thought was just fading is an actual purposeful choice to have the “white” parts of the sticker be more of a heathered off-white.

The one on the viewer’s left (from last year) is round and the red, white, and blue colors are all brights and sharp.

The one on the viewer’s right (from today) is square and the red, white, and blue colors are all muted; they are more like cranberry, ecru, and Prussian Blue

Weeks after that, went to wrap Christmas/Chanukah gifts for Dad’s family Discovered beer cans had exploded, shearing off their own tops (pics below) Beer all over all gifts (thankfully only for Dad, Stepmom, Stepsis, & BIL) Family did not get creative, well-thought-out gifts. They got Macy’s 2/2

Even the #7LineArmy barely showed, and I’ve seen them here through the worst of games and the worst of weather (that I of course stayed for too, because #YaGottaBelieve)!

Smokey (my kitty!nephew) is a weirdo who gets annoyed if you don’t play roughly with him. This was him last night, very annoyed that I had told almost!nephew to quit squishing him into the bed. (I did not expect caring for children to require saying “I don’t care if they like it!” nearly so often)

A dark-gray cat has squished himself between a mattress and the wall-side bed frame, and is perturbed that I have requested that he not be pressed further into the space.
