Violet Dropwing: a visually stunning dragonfly benefitting from millions of years of evolution to produce the perfect predator. An unrivalled flying & killing machine! Praying Mantis: hold my beer!
"Livin' on the edge" Red-veined Dropwing (Trithemis arteriosa). What you don't see in this photo is me standing in a 6 foot deep, slimy, muddy, concrete water storage chamber.
Not many dragonflies come more vibrant than the Violet Dropwing! Trithemis annulata (male).
Not all butterflies are bright, but all are beautiful. Mallow Skipper (Carcharodus alceae).
Nothing wrong with enjoying and sharing species which aren't rare or hard to find. Here's a Common Blue (Polyommatus icarus) that is just as beautiful as any other butterfly.
'Come fly with me' A Swallowtail. This species will forever remain as one of my most favourite butterflies, no matter where I go or what else I see.
Woodland Ringlet (Erebia medusa), northern Greece, @greenwingstours.bsky.social tour based at Lake Kerkini.
Greetings from Greece! Male Silver-studded Blues (Plebejus argus), from 10+ years ago in Suffolk, England.
Female Silver-studded Blue (Plebejus argus) in Suffolk, England. @bc-suffolk.bsky.social
Large Copper (male). The Top Cop in Europe? Certainly must be in the top 3!
Good morning! Ancient photo, being given an airing after I found it in the archives whilst looking for something. Green Hairstreak & Honey Bee.
Goodnight from Greece... Scarce Swallowtail (Iphiclides podalirius) & Old World Swallowtail (Papilio machaon). In Greek mythology Podalirius & Machaon were the sons of Asclepius, the Greek god of medicine.
Good morning from Greece Violet Dropwing (Trithemis annulata). In the 'obelisk' position, performed to minimise the amount of hot sun hitting its body rather than for my viewing or photography pleasure.
