It's one thing for google to be shit and force this hallucinatory trash on us, and I really don't want machines to talk to me in the first place, but it would sure be nice if it at least weren't so confidently condescending while being obviously very wrong!

In the 19th century "true new yorker" was a way to mean "white of Dutch ancestry". And you'll find it alongside such racial relics as "the old Dutch stock". Not convinced that can ever be truly reclaimed.

To set forth the story of the city of New York, of its founding and of its growth, of its struggles and of its success; to do this with a knowledge of the details of the past, and with an appreciation of the difficulties of the present; to tell the tale briefly, briskly, vividly-this is not only to write a good book, it is to do a good deed. And this is what Mr. Theodore Roosevelt has done in the volume he has just written for the series of "Historic Towns," edited by Professor Freeman.

For writing a history of New York City Mr. Roose-velt is exceptionally well qualified. A native New Yorker of the old Dutch stock, he has taken part in the public life of the city ever since he arrived at man's estate, and he has done yeoman service for the cause of good government. He has had a personal acquaintance with the practical part of politics, likely to be as useful to a historian as Gibbon declared that his brief service in the militia had been to him when he came to describe the evolutions of the Roman legionaries. Mr. Roose-velt's earlier literary labors have also stood him in good stead. His "Naval History of the War of 1812" helped him to understand the mercantile development of New York; his biography of "Gouverneur Mor ris" made him an authority on noted New Yorkers of the Revolution; and his "Winning of the West" gave him a sympathy with the pioneer, the settler, and the wandering trader, more akin in condition and not un-like in character to those who founded New York, and by whose efforts it gained its first growth.

In form he was well-built, robust, and vig-orous; and his mind was of a high order, solid and ener-getic, rather than quick and brilliant, possessing the capac-ity of clear and correct thought, and all his powers controlled by a calm, unwavering will. Maybe some of the troops are heroes, but not automatically. I'm sure a lot of the troops are jerks! Most people are jerks already, and it's not like giving a jerk a gun and telling him it's okay to kill people suddenly turns that jerk into a hero!

I might just keep posting all the bad AI results I organically encounter on google search. I google so many random phrases all the time to find usage or misremembered memes that it's gonna keep happening. Here's Google trying to mash up every fish tank joke on the internet.

I just stumbled on a really bad one. I only googled this phrase hoping to find memes. Google, out of the blue, knowing nothing of my love life, couldn't help but being so sycophantic as to give me expert reddit advice to dump my bf. Google *Search*. Why is any of this even in Google Search?

Google used to have the most sophisticated system for organizing information ever. What a loss.

Almost every data point is concentrated at the bottom of the map, with hourly rainfalls all below 30mm, and mostly under 10mm. Except for one outlier point at the top right for when it rained 77mm in an hour in April 2026.

We're doing ourselves a disservice conflating the mere naïveté of personifying AIs with the much more severe notion of psychosis. Some people have developed mental illness from interacting with AI and others are wrong about AI's sentience. Being wrong is not a mental illness. Those are two issues.

Has anyone noticed people dropping the in- from "infuriating"? I only just noticed it, and I find many instances of calling things "furiating" online but I can't find any mention of this variant anywhere.

The first three results are visible and come respectively from r/skyrim, r/camaro, and r/GameTheorist. In the first two examples, "Furiating" is used on its own followed by a period and a complaint in the following sentence. In the third example the context sentence is "I have found the most furiating thing I've seen."

Embarassing, but I somehow went all this time without realizing that John McCarthy the AI/cog-sci guy, and John J. McCarthy the Optimality Theory guy, are not the same person! I suspect the Smolensky's career path had an influence on my error.
