Last year, eighteen-year-old Lucy’s anxiety reached new levels and her life fell apart. She’s now desperate to fit back into her old friend group and convince everyone she’s coping just fine on her own. Actually being fine might be impossible with the stress of first-year university, the stream of housemate dramas, and the increasingly obvious crush on her unobtainable female BFF.

Lucy was the last of them to arrive at the house. She had warned the others that she wouldn’t be able to make it until after the movers had been and gone. Not that she was busy. But just the thought of having to deal with all of the coming and going and the mess and the directing of strangers, and… well, she hadn’t had to explain her reasons to Jaime or Robin. And once Will had secured possession of the room with exterior access, he hadn’t particularly cared what anyone else was going to be doing on the day.

At the foot of the driveway, Lucy stopped, staring up at her new residence. It was two-storey, large for a uni student share house, but she knew it would feel smaller once Robin started to fill it with all his friends. Their friends. Another thing for Lucy to get used to.

The exterior was plain, bare brick. Robin had threatened to have it painted in murals, but knowing him, he’d forgotten about that already. There was a small garden that would probably be dead soon as none of them had wanted to take responsibility for it when they’d tried to assign chores. And the letterbox, a slight thing that had been cemented in on a lean because, for some reason, Robin and Will had insisted on putting it in themselves.

It was familiar in the way that it was a place Lucy had been to a number of times, but it didn’t feel like home. She didn’t feel like she was coming home. At what point did a house feel like a home and not some place you were visiting and could leave?

It was a year of public panic attacks, an exhausting amount of therapy, and too many adults expressing concern and offering her strategies and concessions. Lucy was abandoned by all but two of her friends back then. Not that she blamed the rest. It was too much for them.

Now that she has some good coping strategies in place, Lucy is determined to fit back into her old friend group and to make a success of her first year of university. All she wants is to be one of the crowd, to fade into the background, and to have no more concerned faces aimed at her. So if anyone asks, she’s fine. She’s always fine. Even when she doesn’t feel anything close to fine.

With the stress of university, the constant housemate drama, and her increasingly obvious crush on her unobtainable female best friend, Lucy is struggling. She needs her friends, but if she clues them in on how much she isn’t coping, they might all leave again. And with the stupid crush she can’t shake, she might even lose her BFF this time. Lucy can’t risk it. Unfortunately, bottling up those emotions means they will burst out when Lucy is least in control, like after the complete disaster of her first sapphic date.

Opening lines.

Dean had fucked up. He needed Trish to make it better. He needed her to console him after the most awkward, idiotic social blunder of his life. He needed her to not be mad at him about this. There was little chance of that last one.

He burst through the door into their apartment, already panting from his dash to get up there. The apartment was small, so it didn’t take long to spot Trish. Barely any steps inside and he could see her in the kitchen.

After jogging through the lounge area and rounding the kitchen counter, Dean stopped a few steps from his target, unsure how to proceed. This was going to sound bad no matter how he worded it.

“Hey, babe,” Trish said. “Why do you look like you’re about to faceplant in the middle of the kitchen? What’s the disaster?”

She was teasing. Happy. Ready to minimise whatever Dean had blown out of proportion. He hoped she could hold onto even a little of that attitude.
