A very delayed reply, but I have finallly decided on a card. Presenting... Skewert!
Finally, to round out our bug-aliens-as-threat side of this recommendation, VATBORN TO KILL, by Adam Schwaninger, is a Paragon hack that casts you as elite vatborn warriors whose sole purpose is to defend the Mandate. Great for fans of Starship troopers.
Bug aliens are also a potential opponent in DEAD Troopers, by @sasquatchgames.bsky.social, a high-action sci-fi game also inspired by Starship Troopers and Helldivers.
If you want to FIGHT bug aliens, consider Firedrop, by @meatcastlegameware.com. A spin on Helldivers, this 28 page zine pits you against superfleas, this game is great for folks who love moving little guys across a hex grid.
Descent into Midnight, by Rich Howard, Taylor La Bresh, and Richard Kreutz-Landry: a PbtA game that really challenges you in terms of what a character can look like. Bug Aliens is the least crazy thing you can be, as you are members of an underwater community endangered by a mysterious threat.
Next up is Primal Pathways, published by UFO Press & written by Laurence Phillips. You follow the evolution of an alien species over millenia. Not all of the player options work well for bug species, but I think the Parasite would work well.
Then we have Mother Needs Flesh, by JoPa, a quick Breathless hack about the scions of an alien Mother, hungering for flesh. Again, not necessarily about bugs, but why not?
First up, Xeno Invasion, by @caligaes.itch.io. You are terrifying Xenos sent to earth - instead of experiencing the horror, you ARE the horror! I don't think you have to bugs, but it certainly helps!
After I originally put up this list, @wildwoodsgames.bsky.social also recommended The Bloody-Handed Name of Bronze, a Forge-era game by Joshua A.C. Newman. It's a sword and sorcery game with a rich, colourful world and vibrant art.
2400 BC, by Ozmodeuz, is a 2400 hack inspired by the Epic of Gilgamesh. Rebuild a community after an environmental catastrophe, but with a milieu that has a more mythical connection to natural disasters, rather than a scientific one.
AZAG, by @dankdungeons.bsky.social, is a great option for fans of weird sword & sorcery, with inspirational ties to Fighting Fantasy and Troika. I have a feeling the British OSR community would get a big kick out of this one.
Fragments of the Past, by Dev9k, is a Bronze-Age game set in the Mediterranean, with potentially tragic characters, defined by their passions and epithets. It has a quick-start, a collector's edition, and so much more!
Into the Bronze, by Guilherme Gontijo, is an Into the Odd hack that's pretty stripped down, with no setting written for you to explore. I might pair it with a hexcrawl like Undying Sands by @gamesomnivorous.bsky.social , if I don't want to create my own world.
Champions of Osiris, by @zadmar.bsky.social, is a one-page RPG built on Tricube Tales. It's not exactly Bronze-Age, but it was closer in cultural references to the Middle-Eastern inspiration my postulant was looking for.
Finally, I'd argue that my own game, Protect the Child, provides an interesting twist on the GM role, as the GM is primarily embodying a single character - the Child! This comes with a unique playbook, complete with Strings to pull on to make things happen.
By itself, Planedawn Orphans, by @sharkbombs.bsky.social doesn't really need to be a rotating-GM game, but as someone who is absolutely ravenous about indie games, I think using it as one allows you to experience more games in a campaign.
It's a small thing, but in setup for Slugblaster by @wilkiescandylab.com, each playbook is responsible for defining a different part of your setting, whether that be where your teenagers hang out, or what kinds of shortcuts the crew uses to get between dimensions. Ownership creates investment!
Ars Magica, by @atlasgames.bsky.social, describes itself as a deeply built world that casts you both as mages and their companions, and has been described to me as a rotating-GM game.
At the beginning of Brinkwood: Blood of Tyrants, by @farhorizonscoop.bsky.social, the group partakes in an exercise called Your Exquisite Fae, which has players answer questions about the Fae patron who not only blesses your characters, but pushes them into a specific kind of rebellion.
Apocalypse Keys, by @temporalhiccup.bsky.social, uses the unorthodox player-driven generative mystery that rose to popularity in Brindlewood Bay, but it also asks players to describe and define the places they visit and the organization they work for - rather than asking the GM.
In Fae's Anatomy, by @hebanongames.bsky.social, the GM takes on the role of one or more patients. They use the game manual as a reference book to inform their symptoms, but you discover your diagnosis alongside the players!
Ships That Pass, by Ash Can Games, is a game about spaceships that are also in love with each-other. Unfortunately, your pilots, and the overseeing organization that might want to delete your ships' anomalous romance, might get in the way!
Eyes on the Prize, by @iraprince.bsky.social, is a great option for 2 OR 4 players, about a fake marriage - great for folks who want something lighthearted, with the possibility of a sweet surprise at the end!
From The Sea To The Sky, by @astorysomewhere.bsky.social, is a letter-writing game with a relationship that could be romantic, but also has the potential to be nebulous - likely a great option for folks still navigating how they feel about each-other.
Alone Together in This Vast Space, by @junkfoodgames.bsky.social, is about a solitary space-farer and their ship's AI. This game's intimacy could be romantic, but it could also be platonic! It's up to you.
Perihelion, by @meghanlynnftw.bsky.social, is a prompt-based game about the Sun and the Moon and a relationship that develops - or changes - between them.
Over the Moon, by @speakthesky.itch.io, is a duet game of dark lunar obsession, which takes place over a messaging app. You replace parts of your answers to regular dating questions with the word "moon" - perfect for confusion, decoding, or even just fuelling your obsession with the moon!
Last year, I was given the opportunity to create a character & GM playkit for The Isle of Dr. Moreau, by @usducktape.bsky.social. We customized them for two genres! I really loved how they turned out! You can check out the link for my commissions on my pinned post.
I'm running a showcase game of Protect the Child this month! In Lily's Angels, you help a trans teenager find safety after she flees from both her parents and the police. Beginner-friendly, open-table, with 7 pregenerated characters to choose from! Check it out! app.playabl.io/games/1816/o...
