What is perseverance?

Perseverance is about being willing to bend, but not to break. It's the push to keep moving forward even when the destination seems unreachable; and it's about accepting all the pain that comes along with doing so.

The most famous example of Perseverance is that of The Tortoise and the Hare: while the latter overestimated its talent and rested on its laurels, the former didn't let the overwhelming disadvantage discourage it. In the end, it's the one who persevered that won.

The shadow of one's soul

An unhealthy Perseverance is usually unwilling to let things end. It can be close-minded and insistent, often hurting everyone involved in the process: the Persevering are the most susceptible to the sunk cost fallacy.

It can also build up a quiet resentment toward those it's been enduring for, as an unhealthy Perseverance often doesn't say things until it's too late.

Often confused with determination

DETERMINATION and PERSEVERANCE are often confused for one another, but the difference lies in where the energy points.
While DETERMINATION refuses every ending except the one it chose, PERSEVERANCE will look for different ways to achieve at least one of the results it was aiming for.

Of course, that doesn't mean one can't take from the other. Being so similar in behavior, the Determined and the Persevering often find each other to be fascinating: the former admires the endurance and planning skills of the latter, who in turn admires the Determined's desire for success.

Your secondary virtue

Your second-strongest virtue is KINDNESS, at 69%.

Thanks to KINDNESS' drive to help those in need, the kind Persevering will make sure to see any task taken on for the sake of someone else through to the end.

While this may be admirable, the tendency to do it for other people more than for themselves may prove negative for the kind Persevering in the long term.

Your lowest virtue is bravery (26%). Of course, no one can be perfect at everything.

Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion R2 (2008) It redoes a bunch of stuff from S1 but worse, the 'A' plot screws around for the middle 10 episodes, and the tech leap makes the mech battles lose weight. But still some real Death Note-esque hijinks, and the ending is one for the record books.

Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion (Season 1, 2006, Rewatch) Propulsive and absurd, putting school hijinks in this is one of the best ideas they had. Clear that they had a different sense of the underlying stuff than what they eventually did in R2 (R2 I think is generally a lot worse).

Fate/Zero (2011) On rewatch, you see all the things done to get to F/SN that don’t quite work. And the way women in this show get treated is uh… not great. Definitely an Urobuchi show that aged worse than Madoka. I won’t recommend it to others, but even so, I still enjoyed it. Amazing Kajiura OST.

BLAME! (1997-2003) After many years of seeing gorgeously stark, out-of-context spreads of megastructures from this manga, I finally get my mind together to blaze through it. Astounding aesthetics and atmosphere; I'll remember this imagery for a long time.

Chainsaw Man (2018-2026) Uh, yeah, I guess it's over now! I think the abrupt ending will age very well. I wish that Asa got more interiority. But I am glad that Fujimoto is free to write other things, and that Denji and Asa are free of the curse of being the protagonists of a Shonen manga.

Gatchaman Crowds & Insight (2013, 2015) Incredibly ambitious shows - dropped S2 when it aired because it felt too depressing, but 10 years of the digital world being predicted by S2 has made it seem extremely apropos. Wish Rui got more focus in S2 and that Rizumu was a very different character.

Cosmic Princess Kaguya! (2026) I FINALLY get to watch it and yeah okay this one is going right up there to the top. Even being spoiled on the twists diminished none of its terrifying powers! Guess that's how good things can be. Could feel the world shifting under me as I watched it.

Look, if you say that your affiliated people aren’t just right wingers and your primary counterexample is Larry Summers, you are fooling nobody but yourself.

Kanelos identified 32 people as trustees, faculty members and advisers to the new university including Jonathan Haidt, the NYU professor whose work Kanelos evoked in proclaiming that UATX would produce an “antifragile” cohort with the capacity to think “fearlessly, nimbly, and inventively”; Summers; Pinker; the playwright David Mamet; Glenn Loury, an economist at Brown University; computer scientist and podcaster Lex Fridman; authors Andrew Sullivan and Rob Henderson; the journalists Caitlin Flanagan, Sohrab Ahmari and Jonathan Rauch; Stacy Hock, an investor and philanthropist; and Ayaan Hirsi Ali, a conservative, Dutch politician-turned-writer known for criticizing Islam’s treatment of women, and who is married to Ferguson.
The list leaned right, to be sure. Loury, who is Black, zealously opposes affirmative action. Mamet had called Trump “the best president since Abraham Lincoln.” Hock served as chairwoman of an organization called Texas GOP 2020 Victory. Several of the academics had experienced backlash for taking conservative positions. These included Dorian Abbot, a geophysicist who’d had a planned lecture at MIT on extraterrestrial life canceled over his views on DEI [cut for length, read linked article]

But Summers had served in Bill Clinton’s Cabinet and as Barack Obama’s chief economic advisor. Others were unconventional, independent thinkers, and several, including Haidt and Strossen, had made advocating for free inquiry and open dialogue a major part of their life’s work. It was possible to believe that the group had just enough viewpoint diversity, and a depth of commitment to civil libertarian principles, that it might transcend the virtue signaling, intellectual hegemony and inclination to cancel that had stalled many American colleges and universities.

Revolutionary Girl Utena (1997) FINALLY watched this, and of course it's absolutely perfect. Gut-wrenching, metaphorical, and as ahead-of-its-time today as it was when it released. And also an incredibly funny and well put-together series in its own right! This one is going right up there.
