code looks fine to me! interesting that you see it as white blocks on a black background; i might have written it as a white background, large single block per colour, then some black stripes. but yknow
this is with/without dither. the left is what reminded me of the tops of your mountains. and the right is with 2x2 ordered dither, which has no cost, but a different look, but it still felt authentically 'retro'. anyway. I know you're not going here, but now I can sleep lol
fair enough! the thing looks lovely. i couldnt get out my head replacing the tops with this sort of thing, not noise; not realising its trickier than 1 line to try; but as you have it is of course a fab style.
I stream state out over webusb and get the robots to help me write throwaway one-page visualizers. whatever your tool, visualize visualize visualize! and make every bug worse before you fix it, so you can see its true colours :)
amen. (part of my 'cherish your good testers' series) (thankyou to @bopbip4.bsky.social for the gif and the repiable repro of a bug)
this was the needed extra dependency list for f3d on my machine; f3d is billed as a 'lightweight' mesh viewer. and this is on a machine with tonnes of dev-type stuff already installed. ok i'll stop shaking my first at the clouds now but ... fml
also why the HELL is proj, a 'cartographic projection library' (1) needed to view meshes and (2) 800MB. how does anyone audit what goes on their system. (the proj.org tar file is a few megs, already big; why does brew download 800mb? I dont know. i am scared to find out)
'Trice3d' - 'your stl file is truncated, expected to read <4 billion> bytes' (doesnt read ascii stl maybe?' 'Universal 3d viewer' -> worse than the built in viewer. argh. MeshLab always gives me gimp vibes...
jlc delivery day! i designed into being a silly fader bank idea: each pair has 2 faders and 4 tactile switches, and can magnetically snap to more copies to make banks as big as you like. usb into one on the end, voila. not an original idea, but made just as i want it. also: worked 1st time phew
im getting hungry! 3dgs capture from superspl.at/scene/bd964899 I think theres something wrong with my SH decoder / codebook implementation for the sog format, damnit. <dont insert soggy biscuit joke>
inspired by @boggo.bsky.social 's fluff which uses atomic-max points scattered by a DoF circle of confusion to do stylised bokeh blur, I tried implementing the awesome recent paper jorisar.nl/gaussian_poi... by @momentsingraphics.bsky.social et al and it works well enough to be fun!
the idea i had was to render a sharp 'pinhole' occluder z buffer, visualized here, and then when doing the atomic scatter, you project each point twice: once for the dof/moblur scattered point, and once for the occlusion pinhole camera. that way you can reject blurry occluded points.
experimenting with a simple / novel (to me) showerthought: if you only have additive, gpu-atomic-add based single point splats, and you want to do DOF by scattering those points within the circle of confusion, that looks lovely, but how could we add occluders so it doesn't descend into a glowy mess?
compactness and fluid ui is everything for these noodle uis (I know im preaching to the converted here just to +1). farbrausch's stacking zero crap ui from werkzeug a zillion years ago had the right idea. data flows downards implicitly. just stack the blocks.
i love this so much! lmao.center/blog/wiggle-... (author not on bluesky that I can see but do check their site)
today i discovered my partner has been giving the kittens a drop of cream every morning. i was greeted with this, when i failed to deliver said snack:
after walking past this in the window of the local record shop every day for weeks, i caved finally - and our queen of the night flower decided to bloom. its a sign, man.
pov ... someone opens a tin of food 2 rooms away. I AM AWAKE I AM READY HERE I COME
