Minnesota House DFL
@mnhousedfl
We are the Minnesota House of Representatives Democratic-Farmer-Labor (DFL) Caucus.
Today marks one year since the tragedy at Annunciation. One year since we lost Fletcher and Harper, since 26 children and 3 adults were injured in a horrific act of mass gun violence. One year later, we remember. We haven’t forgotten, and we hold onto our hope that things don’t have to be this way.
Rep. Aisha Gomez: “To look at people standing up against ICE and see ‘paid protesters’ says nothing about us and everything about you.” “That you cannot conceive of us loving our neighbors so much that we would actually do something for them.”
Lorenzo Salgado Araujo did not deserve to die. There needs to be a full investigation into this killing, and ICE needs to be held accountable. This cannot keep happening.
You know who should be grateful that SCOTUS just rejected Donald Trump's attempt to weaken mail-in voting? Donald Trump. Trump trusts mail-in voting when he’s using it, but is doing everything possible to take it away from you.
Happy Juneteenth, Minnesota! Today is a reminder of the cost of freedom deferred — and it is also a celebration of the resilience and hope of African Americans who were forced to fight to earn the freedom they always deserved.
Today marks one year since Melissa and Mark Hortman were killed in a horrific act of political violence. Both of them, along with their dog Gilbert, lived lives defined by their service to others. They were the best of us. We miss them every day. May we all work to honor their legacy.
The legacy of Minnesota House Republicans: “Pharmaceutical lobbyists can pop the champagne.” If the GOP is fighting for the interests of Big Pharma, they probably aren't fighting for you.
UNBELIEVABLE. Speaker Demuth is now hiding a major ICE accountability bill as well as the comprehensive gun package. Minnesotans deserve better than elected leaders who won't give them a straight answer. It's indefensible to see the harm done to Minnesotans in the last year, and look the other way.
Lisa Demuth has 12 more hours to uphold her promises to the parents of Annunciation children lost to preventable gun violence and HOLD A VOTE. 12 hours to show that she hears the pleas and the stories of Minnesotans affected by gun violence over decades. 12 hours to do one thing right.
Rep. Sencer-Mura, talking about a six-year-old who was shot at Annunciation and now struggles with long-term health effects from the bullet shrapnel inside his body: "Lead poisoning from a bullet from a school shooting. That is a story that would only happen in America. Happy 250th anniversary."
Powerful speech from Mike Moyski, the father of Harper Moyski, the ten-year-old who was shot and killed in the Annunciation shooting, as the DFL's 39-hour sit-in concludes: Even though Speaker Demuth is hiding this bill now, she's kidding herself if she thinks this issue is going to go away.
A crowd of supporters chants “hold the vote!” as DFL lawmakers prepare for the first House floor session since our sit-in began 39 hours ago.
BREAKING: We have now held the House floor for 24 HOURS STRAIGHT. We are continuing our sit-in to demand that the GOP stop blocking a historic gun violence prevention bill and hold a fair vote. We’re still here, and we’re still fighting. LFG.
An update from the Capitol: DFL legislators have now been holding the House floor for 12 hours straight. We've been here since last night, and we'll be here all the way until the Speaker gavels the House back into session. It's time for a vote on comprehensive gun violence prevention legislation.
Once again, Republicans have chosen the gun lobby over the safety and lives of Minnesotans. We aren’t done fighting. Not at all. But every Minnesotan deserves to know that every Republican just blocked comprehensive gun safety legislation.
HAPPENING NOW: After ten days of House Republicans blocking and hiding a comprehensive gun violence prevention bill — and after 260 days since the tragic mass shooting at Annunciation church — we're demanding the GOP listen to Minnesotans and allow a vote on the House floor.
WATCH: Republicans have now blocked *three* separate attempts from Minnesota Democrats to vote on a gun violence prevention bill that already passed the Senate. Republicans are trying to bury this bill to avoid a vote. One GOP legislator even admitted that he'd been "instructed not to report it."
In Minnesota, GOP leadership has been hiding a gun violence prevention bill in a desk drawer to prevent it from coming to a vote. In response, DFL legislators just announced that they will begin a sit-in to hold the House floor overnight unless Speaker Demuth allows for a fair vote within 24 hours.
Minnesota's largest safety-net hospital is at risk of shutting down as early as next month. The closure of Hennepin County Medical Center would be a catastrophe for the entire state, especially rural Minnesota. We're taking action at the Capitol to make sure HCMC can stay open.
Families and survivors of the Annunciation mass shooting are calling out GOP Speaker Lisa Demuth for her refusal to allow a vote on gun violence prevention legislation. "To say you don't want to bring it to the floor, just because you're worried about your own political future, is nauseating."
Rep. Emma Greenman: "We have a comprehensive gun violence prevention bill that is just sitting there being blocked by Speaker Demuth." "The actions that 70% of Minnesotans want us to take, not cherry-picked proposals the gun lobby doesn't oppose, would be keeping weapons of war off the street."
Minnesota Republicans are blocking a small business relief bill because it would help businesses impacted by ICE’s Operation Metro Surge. They won’t even bring it to a vote unless we agree to weaken the state’s paid leave program. "This is not negotiation, this is cruelty dressed up as policy."
Republicans and Lisa Demuth continue to lie to Minnesotans — including directly to the parents of a child who was shot and killed in a school shooting. It's time for the GOP to stop lying, stop hiding, and take action to keep our kids safe from gun violence.
🚨APPALLING: Minnesota Republicans are literally hiding legislation in a desk drawer to prevent it from coming up for a vote. One of Speaker Lisa Demuth's deputies just admitted that he was "instructed not to report" a bill banning assault weapons/high-capacity magazines the Senate already passed.
Minnesota's largest safety-net hospital is on the brink of shutting its doors. Its closure would be a disaster that costs Minnesotans their lives. Rep. @cedrickfrazier.bsky.social visited HCMC to talk with leaders and staff about our efforts at the legislature to ensure the hospital can stay open.
GOP Leader Rep. Harry Niska says we need to keep raising CEO's salaries because we need to "pay them what they're worth." How about we start by paying teachers and nurses what they're worth? What about construction and restaurant workers? But no, the GOP just wants more millions for the C-suite.
Two Republican legislators in Minnesota left the Capitol in the middle of a committee hearing to go day drinking at a bar downtown. Imagine if a nurse, a teacher, or a firefighter left their job during their workday to go knock back a few cold ones. These legislators should be held accountable.
Energy companies are gouging customers with rate increase after rate increase, and then using that money to pay their CEO's more and more. We just forced a vote on legislation that would stop public utility companies from this C-suite price gouging. Almost every single Republican voted against it.
