Stede did the breakfasts because he was always awake first, but dinner was Ed’s domain. He’d never made a dinner before they moved here, but you wouldn’t know it now if you tried it! He liked to rotate the menu every day, keep things interesting. Monday might be baked fish, Tuesday maybe he’d make a stew. Wednesday, who knew, maybe he’d go wild and mash some potatoes!

Have a bit of @innkeepersweek.bsky.social for WIP Wednesday. Featuring domestic duties, an unexpected guest, and some not great communication.

“Nah, just said he needed to clear his head or something. He put down payment in advance for a week, but he said he might extend it.”

“I see.” Stede didn’t look at Ed, instead focusing on his task. They were stripping and replacing the bedding in the guest room while this took place, an activity they’d found it best to perform together after some trial and error. It had started with Ed enthusiastically taking on the task, eager to be domestic, and one hour seventeen minutes later threatening to shoot the sheet when it repeatedly came away from one corner as he straightened it, no matter how much tucking he did.

Stede had adopted the duty, but quickly realised why Mary had employed a housekeeper. These sheets were simply impossible to fit. Maybe if one could use some sort of elastic around the edges to keep them snug around the mattress it might work, but then how would you fold them?

Eventually, it was determined that sharing the activity allowed them to each take responsibility for two corners, with the added bonus of being able to catch up on inn business while they worked.

It was only once he’d smooth down one corner that Stede realised Ed had stopped. He looked up. He would probably never be used to being the focus of attention from those beautiful eyes, even if he sensed he might be in trouble. “What is it?”

“Who is he?”

“Who?”

“Who do you think? The guest.”

“Oh. Jeffrey.” He moved to start work on his other corner.

“Right. And Jeffrey is…?”

“Just someone I used to know.”

“Right.” Ed paused like he was waiting for Stede to add more, but what could he really say? He didn’t want to bring the mood down talking about his lonely childhood and one single friend. “And does he know about, you know,” Ed gestured between the two of them, “us?”

“What about us?”

“Stede. Come on.”

“I think he just thinks we’re innkeepers. I don’t know. It didn’t come up.”

“It’s a seagull.”

“It’s a Mediterranean gull, they’re still quite rare here. They’re different to black headed gulls in, well, in a few ways really, but at this time of year they’ve got the fully black head as opposed to a brown sort of hood.”

“Right. It’s a seagull.” Birds had been another passing obsession of his, inspired by his mysterious friend Buttons in the later days of their marriage. They never really went away, she’d noticed, these little fixations. They seemed to just go dormant for a while until something provoked them.

“There’s no such thing as a seagull, you know, they’re all just gulls.”

“That live on the sea. Seagulls.”

“Well no, not always, I mean, there are hundreds of them in cities and towns. And there are dozens of species, different ones in different places.” She’d almost missed this side of Stede, the one that gave a running commentary on life.
