(connie) casual art from portland 🌲 ✨ making pottery at nolaclaypdx.com 🌸 and ikebana with oharaoregon.org
I think my favorite is this caterpillar — look at his cute lil face
I picked up needle felting to make this little garden-themed baby mobile, and I couldn’t be more pleased with how it turned out 🥰 also now I have a new hobby (not that I really needed more)! 😂 #needlefelt #nursery
He’s here!! 😍 He’s gonna be the best little work helper, I can already tell.
Recently my pottery style has been to go back and forth between boring functionalware or completely useless kitschy things 😅 anyway, here’s a capybellra I made!
A 100% from-my-yard upright moribana arrangement from this morning’s ikebana class. It feels so much more satisfying when I manage to use only plants from my yard, but I usually can’t pull it off in the winter! So glad the weather’s getting nice again ☺️ #ikebana #oharaikebana #irises
Ahhhh it’s spring!! I challenged myself with all-bulb-flowers at ikebana class last week. It was finicky working with so many floppy leaves and my kenzan coverage is not great, but no regrets — I’m just so happy bulb flowers are finally blooming around here ☺️ #ikebana #oharaikebana #spring #flowers
Is it cheating if I had to tilt my phone screen back and forth a little bit to see some of these though?
Really happy with this mug that came out recently! The hardest part was cleaning up the dark clay from the handle join off of the white/marbled clay body 😅
Here’s an upright moribana from class this morning — I’ve had zero time this week, so I just stopped into Trader Joe’s right before class for materials 🙈 It’s knifeblade acacia, tiny button mums, and eryngium this week ☺️ #ikebana #oharaikebana
My second attempt at water-reflecting moribana — this is hard! I love this style when I see others make it… but I haven’t quite gotten the hang of it yet 😅 #ikebana #oharaikebana #flowers
Gonna call this a success! Love the satisfying texture of the grog on the bare clay 💕
I recently bought some rainbow-colored grog to try mixing into porcelain for a confetti look — this is my first trial run of that after bisqueing ☺️ the clay looks tan in the picture because it’s wet (I just gave it a quick sanding), but it should fire white. So excited to see how this turns out!
Just realized I never shared this Halloween-y arrangement from last week’s class! It’s my first water-reflecting style moribana ☺️ I’ve had it on my dining table for a week, but this morning I harvested the petals and fruit to see if they’ll make a nice natural dye 🤞 #ikebana #oharaikebana
New mug! This glaze texture is so satisfying 🤩 #pottery #ceramics #mugshotmonday
Itty bitty American persimmon (Diospyros virginiana) I plucked on a walk the other day, vs. Fuyu persimmon from the grocery store — look how cute and perfect and little, it’s like the grocery store persimmon has a mini-me 🥹 I am such a sucker for tiny things.
Ikebana class is back 🌟 All of these materials are from my front yard, so this is almost like a little snapshot of early October in Portland ☺️ I love using my peony leaves this time of year! #ikebana #oharaikebana #autumn
Glaze experiment before and after 😄 I did this one by pulling up 4 glazes in one 50ml syringe, wetting the plate to slow absorption, then emptying the syringe onto the plate and swirling it around like an acrylic pour painting. I think it turned out neat! #pottery #ceramics #glazetest
Newest mug, and maybe my favorite yet ☺️ The apple is painted with Mayco Stroke n’ Coat 🎨 #pottery #ceramics #mugshotmonday
My two favorites from the last batch of glaze tests — a new wax resist pattern, and some neat crystally glaze interaction from Mayco Himalayan Salt, Black Walnut, and Green Tea 💕
Last class’s ikebana arrangement (and the last one for a while probably!) It’s another slanting moribana, with snowberry, pompom dahlia, and pink lace flower 🌼 #ikebana #oharaikebana
Finished my sewing project just in time for the Thorns game this morning! Bummed about the loss, but on the other hand — that Croix/Trinity masterpiece?? Nah you deserved that one Spirit, we’ll take the next one 🤷🏻♀️ #BAONPDX #thatsthespirit
Arrangement from class today with materials from my yard — actually I brought a third material as well but didn’t end up using it! I like that my hydrangea has flowerheads in a bunch of different stages right now (new, full bloom, fading…) and wanted to really showcase that ☺️ #ikebana #oharaikebana
A slanting moribana from ikebana class today — I always have a hard time with this style! I think I’m getting better at it though 😅 Climbing rose and hosta leaves (from my yard) and feverfew (from the grocery store 😂) #ikebana #oharaikebana #flowers
Shoutout Oregon Coast Scenic Railroad — we had a great time on their evening train yesterday! So fun 😄
