I have two good things for you this week - an academic vampire movie, and a short story collection. Both explore some very satisfying and direct and visceral aesthetic pleasures, and so they complement each other well.

There is a lot to be gained from reading and watching and playing and whatever, from engaging with media or with life generally (people watching at a café, one of life’s most powerful pleasures - and did I do this and see one big dog and one tiny dog today? yes), but so often it does come down to that perfect, direct sensorial pleasure you can get. One small coffee please. One big vampire bite. Slurp!

"This is a short story collection, or a prose poetry collection, and I guess the question is: what’s the difference? I don’t know, really, and the book’s cover says “STORIES” right next to the title so you know how to enter the book with the right frame of mind, but I love the descriptive, visceral, ethereal tone these little stories take. They feel inseperable from poetry as a medium, stories or not.

In any case, I love the motifs, the exploration of the strange distance of adoption, the indulgence in food and its obvious pleasure as a comfort and a memory, and perhaps most of all, the pockets of humour throughout. One story, titled ‘Joon-Ho’, begins like this:

“My father is always away, directing movies to great acclaim.”

Perfect."

Yesterday I spent three hours on a train, and read the entire time. It was bliss. I finished one of my favourite books of the year, while the old guy next to me watched videos of Slash doing crazy guitar solos on his phone. I think we were both experiencing the purest possible pleasure. Good day to that man.

A post titled 'Book of the week: The Go-Between by L. P. Hartley.'

“The past is a foreign country; they do things differently there.”

I needed to know what could possibly follow such an impeccable first sentence. As it turns out, The Go-Between is a complex, beautifully dramatic novel following thirteen-year-old Leo Colston in 1900 as he enters the sophisticated society of a school friend over the summer and becomes embroiled, in a small way, in a scandal.

My jaw was on the floor at some points, and after finishing it, the depth of that opening line feels all the more satisfying. Leo looks upon his life with both rosy nostalgia and a haunting, muted sadness.

It is an ode to the destruction of social restriction and an incredible examination of the twin promise and anguish of the first half of the 20th century. And I love it so much."

"It’s weird to have another Toy Story movie. Woody ran off to the woods to join a toy commune last time, but in this movie he has to awkwardly return and have needless beef with Buzz. Why? I thought those guys were over their beef.

Whatever, this instalment is about how kids are all iPadded to hell these days, and I did really enjoy just how hard they went into iPad baby hater territory. The children are all lolling around dazed in their dimly lit bedrooms, gazing thoughtlessly at their blinding screens. It’s kind of amazing.

From there, the movie is fun. It’s well-paced, it made me chuckle, it has a large amount of Buzz Lightyears. But I didn’t find the new iPad character very inspiring. She’s not villainous enough, and she doesn’t have much of an arc, so while I liked the movie fine, it was a testament to the details (there is an electronic toilet roll character now, and I like him) that the thin story didn’t bother me more.

What can I say? I simply clap when I see Buzz."

"How can I possibly describe The Dirties? It’s a movie that so perfectly walks the tightrope between funny and heartbreaking to create an insane, unique emotional experience. The characters are so real, and the dizzying switches into and out of the metacinema of it all (coming out of a scene into its own active editing process, occasional reminders that there is a third person behind the camera, etc) impeccably blur the line between reality and the central characters’ cinematic interpretation of it.

It is ugly, real, funny, shocking, touching, and astonishingly complex. A genuinely jaw-dropping movie."

They have a song about Georgy Porgy on here, and it is one of the greatest songs ever made. Girl Goodbye is also one of my favourites (a huge song about getting the hell outta there), but every single song on this album is pure gold."
