The improved battery life over stock GBAs with modern screen kits comes from the improved efficiency of the power supply! It also yields better battery life than the Funnyplaying GBA boards, even with the on-board LEDs turned off. I can get anywhere between 5h and 13h of playtime on the AGBM-11.
Got my e-reader cards in from @retrodotcards.com and can confirm, it's a great time! I've been playing Exo Attack for the past few hours :)
I dropped by daily driver MGBC and the screen stopped working 😭 Luckily it was just that the ribbon cable came dislodged Crisis averted 😮💨 Lessons learned: only play while seated and not in the vicinity of children

Also low key one of my favorite additions is the blinking red light when the battery is critically low
These are not recent pictures, but I just did surgery on my favorite GBA build to replace the original motherboard with an AGBM-01 to officially make it a Game Boy Enhance. The audio is crystal clear!
It is pretty nice to have my past observations from half a year ago re-validated
Wowee - first agbm-02 mockup working well, uses a converter chip more available than the -01, with no impact to audio quality, and draws ~20mW less than -01 at a baseline. Neat! That only puts it 15mW more power than a stock GBA. Might be able to get it lower.
It looks like - if the only difference is the ROM - there's room to expand the pcb about 1/2 inch up and then shove the other ROM chip on the board like this. Then put a switch through the shell to let you select the region before you turn the game on. But that's only if the flash chip doesn't care
As a guess - if each region's ereader is region locked only because of the unavailable shared graphics, one could dump the contents of each ROM, and then burn them to a ROM chip 2x as large as the e-reader's. Then use a switch to toggle between them. I do something similar on my gbc multicarts
Just opened mine up, looks like it's got a ROM, Flash memory, a PGA (programmable gain amplifier), and some supporting circuitry. The back is empty other than a cap. The region locking would be coming from the software side, so I don't think that's something that can be designed out in hardware
By the way, you can customize a logo with the Funnyplaying IPS Max display - I include a Game Boy Enhance logo in the repository that you can use :)
Happy 25th birthday, Game Boy Advance! To celebrate, I am happy to announce the Game Boy Enhance is FINALLY here! The Game Boy Enhance (AGBM) is a circuit-level recreation of the Game Boy Advance. It uses almost all-new components, but still uses the original CPU - it's not emulation!
I've finished doing some real-life battery tests with the Funnyplaying ITA kit for the AGBM-01. The battery life ranges from 7h44m to 15h35m. The calculated values were pretty close to measured, so that's pretty cool. Don't need to do the other settings. I still need to do AGBM-11 and FP Max kits
