the og will also be edited when you edit the new linked one so you may want to make it single user. if things turn huge or tiny, undo it and apply all transforms on both objs and that usually fixes the issue for me. if its flat, you probably need to rotate it 90 then apply all transforms as above.
i do NOT know the right way to do this... here is probably the wrong way i bring something from one hier to another. duplicate an object (shift+D) from the target skel (the clothes). click it, then ctrl click the object you want to bring in. ctrl+l -> link object data. the object has transformed.
