There are loads of things I like, and try to talk only about them, but sometimes, y'know, the state of the world and all that...
Mahler's 1st symphony, given the full @auroraorchestra.bsky.social treatment at the #BBCproms this evening, and in typically fabulous style.
"The outing to Box Hill took an unusual turn when it became apparent why Mr Knightley had brought an extra saddle and harness..."
Actually, if you're on Bailgate, I think this was where he lived, just near the end of Westgate (and coincidentally pretty close to where I grew up and my mum still lives)
Honestly, I'm going to a beer festival this evening, in a pub garden. Bloody English weather, eh? (I'm joking, obviously. I'm only worried that there may also be a 40% chance of me taking all my clothes off.)
Here at last. Quite fancied a couple of concerts last week, but didn't quite manage to sort myself out. However, not going to miss Sibelius 2...
Shocking. I've fallen for it no end of times. Those old 60s films are so convincing. They even made one of a "duet" with Janis Joplin, the sickos.
Post a perfect album from the 90s that isn't Nirvana, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam or Alice in Chains (could have used Transmissions from the Satellite Heart, but went for the better-known option)
A Clouded Yellow butterfly having a nice lick of marjoram. Used to see one or two of these a year*, but saw loads yesterday. (*I see quite a lot of butterflies, as my other half does survey/counts and I often go along to "help")
... and then you get to the top of the ridge, and it's all fennel. Italian starter, Balti main course.
One thing I love about this time of year: the North Downs smell mainly of marjoram.
Cuh, good old British summer, eh? Might have to get my jumpers out if the temperature drops any more.
All the Twitter trolls who used to appear in your team's timeline after a defeat. Hope someone steals his ice cream.
One of my favourite daft World Cup fans is the Belgian with the Atomium on his head.
I've got the National Trust cafe area at Box Hill practically to myself today. Maybe six other people, apart from staff. Unheard of for a Friday afternoon (even though it's not as hot as Wednesday, and there's a bit of cloud and breeze).
Had to maintain spoiler-free radio silence until I'd watched the Belgium-USA game... I'm assuming this has now been officially ratified as the Donald J. Trump Memorial Defensive Howler?
I wish they'd made more of this, with all full matches as well as highlights. Mainstream TV hasn't really caught up with the concept of on-demand "as live" sport - I've been caught out on a couple of occasions by the main iPlayer WC2026 page having latest scores about halfway down.
Still far too bloody hot and sticky (23C here) but this looks promising. I can see flashes on the southern horizon.
It's that Marbled White time of year again. I mean, just look at that. Monochrome elegance, like an Art Nouveau lampshade.
"Psychedelic folk horror" feels a bit glib, but it's the best I can do for now. Absolutely loved this, by @adamsleslie.bsky.social
Having just watched Messi playing with clear pleasure and delight for ~80 minutes, it'll be interesting to see the mood and persona of Cristiano Ronaldo later (assuming he plays).
At a beer festival where there's a TV showing the football, which is nice, plus I'm currently bang on with my 2-0 Mexico prediction. Surely something has to go wrong?
I was looking for info about a particular muscle and how it could be aggravated by cycling, but I'm not sure I'm going to trust activeposture.co.uk on any matters of human anatomy... (from the "just take a photo of your mate rather than using AI" pile)
Right, can't put this off any longer. Only thing to decide: do I go by pure instinct or do some Proper Research? (btw, if you're looking for a prediction competition, I've been doing Dave's in World Cups and Euros for over 20 years, and they're always fun: matchwise.co.uk)
NP: (although I'm actually working on instructional material for a series of guitar masterclasses on Neoclassical rock/metal. Cognitive dissonance alert!)
