It’s funny, I just happened to mention this in my newsletter today—the first and only time BMI has come up

“For most of my life, I was chronically underweight. At first, there was no real reason for it—I was just a skinny kid. Later, I discovered I had an undiagnosed colon issue and needed surgeries, all of which led to dropping more weight and a significant change in diet. Until recently, the only time I had a “normal” Body Mass Index* was after I graduated college, when I started drinking roughly a fifth of vodka every day.
Drinking that much every day boosted my caloric intake faster than eating ever could. Food was not terribly important to me; drinking was the most important thing in my life. Though they didn’t know the reason for the change, people who had been worried about my perpetual stick-thinness suddenly rushed to tell me how good I looked. How I finally looked “healthy.”
