Doing some small portfolio updates and remembering that I used to draw comics too. Love my buff ladies (and nonbinary pirate!) and thick locs, they're so much fun to draw. A few favorite panels from some very old comics.

Falthazir called it contract magic, the spells he used to bind spirits and creatures to his command, but that implied some kind of agreement. Marrow had been stolen from their realm, a place more concept than substance where they’d been happily nameless, just another wisp gliding along strands of gossamer thought.

Good news, the sauce turned out okay after all! No one else complained (we had a Belgian Independence Day party, and everyone dressed up as iconic landmarks, it was really fun) and my sibling made a little frites stand! That was a big hit.

And last, but certainly not least, Percy and Knell from Traitor & The Wretch both have disabilities. Percy is a recent amputee with PTSD and Knell has, uhh, a whole lot going on and it's spoiler-y but includes: extensive scarring, anxiety, and PTSD as well. Amazing art by @skulkingfoxes.bsky.social

The Last Session Vol. 2 has Erika, who uses a cane after an accident in her childhood (the cause isn't explained on page, but it is part of her life) and it's even reflected in her in-game character design where her character has a magical prosthetic leg.

in The Last Session vol. 1, Jay (who runs the tabletop game) is diabetic and wears a blood glucose monitor. It's not something that is explicitly stated, but it was suggested by the editor when I told them I wanted a masc-leaning nonbinary character who was both fat and active, and I loved the idea.

BROOMS also had Loretta, Billie Mae's best friend and the defensive position of the Night Storms. She had a stroke at a young age and uses both mobility aids (a leg brace) and accessibility parts on her racing broom. She was inspired by my grandmother, who also had a stroke at a young age.

BROOMS also had Emma, one of the newer members of the Night Storms (an illegal broom racing team) who is deaf and uses sign language. Without access to period accurate Choctaw Sign Language, I used "Indian Sign Language" by W. Tomkins and we had Mississippi Band of Choctaw language experts review it

BROOMS was my first published graphic novel, (with art by Teo DuVall, colors by @lgions.bsky.social and lettering by @airy.bsky.social) and one I'm so proud of! Lots of characters with disabilities in this and first up is Billie Mae, the irrepressible team leader with chronic joint pain (like me!)

Happy #LateNightWrites!! Tonight I'll be chatting about #ThisMortalCoil a book about a skeleton that outlives their evil wizard and has to figure out what to do with themself in the aftermath. Their new travel buddy, Kingslayer, has a couple suggestions.

Ooh, I'll have to try this, I love the caramel flavor coming from bits of brown sugar! Here's my base recipe for an everyday classic shortbread (with optional rosemary), you can add whatever flavors you like and endlessly customize it.

Rosemary Shortbread (9x9 inch pan)

1 C unsalted butter, softened
1/2 C sugar
1/2 tsp salt
1 tsp vanilla extract
1 tsp dried rosemary, finely chopped
2 1/2 C all purpose flour

Preheat the oven to 300 F.
Cream the butter, sugar, salt, vanilla, and rosemary together until light and pale. sift in the flour and mix until just fully combined.
Pat the dough evenly into the baking pan, poke with a skewer or fork across the surface (optional: dust surface with a thin sprinkling of sugar), and bake on the center rack for about 45 minutes or until just golden around the edges.
Place the pan on a rack to cool, slice with a thin, sharp knife while slightly warm.

For cutout cookies: Roll dough to 1/4 inch thick, cut out shapes, and bake at 325 F for 8-12 minutes or until golden around the edges.

$CHAPTER 1 Knell Glory, in Deathknell's experience, was overrated. His brethren were mixed about it, he knew. Some cried out, "Glory in the name of the Risen! The Great One!" with fervor as they carved sigils into the ground, tearing up grass still wet with dew, while others followed their lead for lack of a better option. They took up the chant with a listless parody of enthusiasm in the hope that it might keep the more faithful from targeting them. Personally, Knell didn't bother. Glory wasn't meant for the likes of him. What revelry was there to be had in an unremarkable death after a short and miserable life? Technically on guard duty, he watched the horizon, staring at the first sunrise he'd seen in months. His eyes ached as the sun emerged and light fractured into a million glittering reflections against the spears, shields, and helmets of two armies pouring into the valley of the caldera. No better place to summon a god than above the heart of a long-dead volcano. The sigils covered a wide expanse that stretched up the wall of the caldera, giving the approaching armies a glimpse of what was to come. To show they'd arrived too late. On one side was the king's army, all polished steel and bright uniforms. On the other were the rebels, which Knell didn't know much about. He'd been living in a cave for a few years now, and acolytes of the Great one, the Chaos Bringer, didn't get a lot of heralds stopping by with news. The rebels looked like a rough and mismatched bunch even from this distance, but there certainly were a lot of them. Could they set aside their grudges, whatever they may be, to stand united against the true threat on the field? It seemed unlikely, but if they could— A sensation like a fist closing around his skull reminded Knell why it was best not to let his thoughts wander.$
